A new construction should not be introduced unexpectedly – Grammar Ch
2009-09-23 23:40:00
As with any other language, in English the structure and state of words in any collection of English sentences and phrases is very important. When constructing sentences great care should be given to the structure and the state of words. Most people say that they cannot write but the fundamentals of English that one need to be aware of are very simple and to be proficient in the language one only needs to be aware of these pillars of the language and their usage especially in the sentences. Grammar which is a large part of the English language includes parts of speech, grammar usage and grammar mechanics. In simple sentences one can hardly go wrong but as the clauses in the sentences increase then the complexity of language increases also. One should also be able to identify the subjects and the verbs in any given sentence be it a simple sentence or a complex one. Every sentence contains verbs which present themselves in varying states depending on the intended meaning within the ...
Grammar Check – Let each sentence have one principal subject of thoug
2009-09-21 01:13:00
Let each sentence have one, and only one, principal subject of thought — Avoid heterogeneous sentences The writing process is not very easy but if you follow the rules regarding grammar, sentence construction, and paragraphing and others, it becomes a lot easier. It is always good to make your sentences easily understandable whether you use simple, compound or complex ones. This means that for you to be more clear on what you want to pass on, you should have one principal thought or idea for every sentence. When you make your sentences heterogeneous, you make it look like your thoughts are not organized and the reader can be easily misled. The main idea of a sentence should always come first too so that it is easier for the reader to follow and identify the main idea with whatever additional information you may be giving. For instance, “It was a beautiful dress with a unique design and adorned with splendid flowers.” The main idea of the sentence is “It was a beautiful...
The principle of Suspense – Check your Grammar
2009-09-19 19:14:00
Language dictates that one of the most effective techniques be used for the delivery of any kind of message is suspense. Suspense being one of the most favored elements of conversation brings about such delivery in a most appealing way. The structure of the narrative in question should therefore be maintained for as long as this element serves its purpose. However, introduction of a component of the story at an inappropriate point makes the use of suspense all too useless. One should learn that with suspense the information that has been withheld all through the statement should be introduced either gradually or suddenly as fits the circumstances. This should however not happen if your audience is totally unprepared for the facts you are about to divulge. One should therefore leave the attention of the audience to fill in the left out details in order to hold their interest for a significant length of time. Introduction of your own opinion or assessment of the circumstance being n...

GRAMMAR MADE EASY IN 23 STEPS!
2008-06-09 20:28:00
GRAMMAR MADE EASY IN 23 STEPS! My several years in the word game have learnt me several rules: 1.Avoid alliteration. Always. 2.Prepositions are not words to end sentences with. 3.Avoid cliches like the plague. (They're old hat.) 4.Employ the vernacular. 5.Eschew ampersands & abbreviations, etc. 6.Parenthetical remarks (however relevant) are unnecessary. 7.It is wrong to ever split an infinitive. 8.Contractions aren't necessary 9.Foreign words and phrases are not apropos. 10.One should never generalize. 11.Eliminate quotations. As Ralph Waldo Emerson once said: "I hate quotations. Tell me what you know." 12.Comparisons are as bad as cliches. 13.Don't be redundant; don't use more words than necessary; it's highly superfluous. 14.Profanity sucks. 15.Be more or less specific. 16.Understatement is always best. 17.Exaggeration is a billion times worse than understatement. 18.One-word sentences? Eliminate. 19.Analogies in writing are...

Grammar in Visual Language: A Visual Linguist Podcast

I've just watched this Vizthink podcast which I found on Neil Cohn's blog 'The Visual Linguist':What qualifies as visual language anyway? As usual if you click on the podcast when running it will fill the screen. In addition to the discussion and slides there are many other sources to explore. The news map example had me thinking about Hodges' model and problems within the four care domains. If in addition to clinical staff, managers and policy makers really do want to see evidence of person-centred care and carer's views being taken into account; then how fine-grained should the care map be?(Or is it just a tick in box!)News is one thing, but is there an optimum level for care? Plus of course problems are not the only fruit - there are strengths too...

Some Differences between Malay and English Grammar
2008-04-18 18:31:00
1 Position of Adjectives In Malay, the adjectives are placed after nouns instead of in front of them as in English. e.g. Rumah besar (Big house) 2 Countable nouns in Malay must be preceded by numerical coefficients (penjodoh bilangan) after counting words (kata bilangan) such as dua (two), kedua-dua (both), beberapa (several), and berpuluh-puluh (tens of) but there are no numerical coefficients in English. e.g. a) Dia membeli dua buah buku. (He bought two books.) b) Kedua-dua biji buah epal ini sudah masak. (Both apples are ripe.) c) Beberapa orang pelajar sedang dimarahi oleh guru mereka. (Several students are being told off by their teacher.) ) Berpuluh-puluh pucuk surat permohonan jawatan sudah ditulisnya. (Tens of application letters for jobs have been written by him.) In the above four sentences the words in bold are penjodoh bilangan which must be used in front of countable nouns which appear in italic. 3 There are no pronoun...

2008-04-06 04:56:00
Conjunctions A conjunction is a word like AND, BUT, OR, SO, WHEN, etc., which connects words, phrases or clauses. Conjuncts A conjunct relates what is said in a sentence to another sentence. As such, it is not part of the structure of the sentence in which it is used. EG: However, things turned out much worse than expected. ('However' relates what is said to contrast it with previous information about the speaker's expectations.) All told, we did very well. ('All told' connects information that has already been given to produce a final conclusion that connects everything. In both examples it is possible to remove the conjunct without making the sentence ungrammatical.) Coordinating Conjunctions Coordinating conjunctions join two items of equal importance. For, and, nor, but, or, yet and so are the coordinating conjunctions in English, forming the mnemonic FANBOYS. They contrast with subordinating conjunctions, like if and whether, that introduce a dependent clause . Th...

Tag questions - ESL English
2008-03-24 16:47:00
What are tag questions and what do we use it for?A question added to a declarative sentence, usually at the end, to engage the listener, verify that something has been understood, or confirm than an action is agreed. Common tags include won't you? wasn't it? don't you? haven't you? okay? and right? (www.about.com)Example: You are American, aren't you? Los "question tags" son preguntas que se aaden al final de una oracin para verificar o confirmar algun dato o informacion. You smoke, dont you ? T fumas, verdad ? I cant drink beer, can I ? No puedo beber cerveza, cierto? Rules of question tagsThe English tag question is composed by an auxiliary verb (did, does, do, will, has, have etc) and a subjective pronoun. The auxiliary has to agree with the tense of the sentence. If the verb was in the present tense, for example, the tag question uses do or does; if the verb was in a present continuous form, the tag is formed with am, are, is; and if the sentence has a modal verb,...

Reported speech or Indirect Speech
2008-03-18 17:15:00
What is Reported speech?Reported speech is speech relayed by the narrator. That is, it is indirect speech, words attributed to but not actually (directly) spoken by a character. It is a grammatical construction in which reports are made of something that was said, written, or thought (eg, She said she was going home)El estilo indirecto (REPORTED SPEECH) lo utilizamos para contar lo que una persona ha dicho pero sin citar exactamente sus palabras. Why is Reported Speech important? It is important because it is a great tool to transmit information from a third person or people. We use this all the time. Let us use an example:Suppose Juan (your friend) says this to you : ' I am going to quit my job'Now, you want to inform Alice (another friend) what Juan told you. What do we use? YES! We use reported speech. We would say: Juan told me he was going to quit his job.Why don't we just use the same tense? This is a great question. In our example used above, we could just say:Juan is...
