Toshangi Gorge - The Grand Canyon of Sindh
2008-05-23 11:29:00 Owais MughalThe landscape of Sindh Province is mostly associated with deserts as well as agricultural and coastal table lands. Sindh however is endowed with much more than that. Few days ago we introduced the highest peak of Sindh called Gorakh - where it snows in winter - and today we?ll introduce another road less traveled in Sindh. It is called the Toshangi gorge and it is located in Kirthar Range of mountains on Sindh-Balochistan border. The word Kirthar in Sindhi means ?milk-cream? which is a bit luxurious name for the harsh environment here.A British archaeologist, author and civil servant named Hugh Trevor Lambrick, who was the Deputy Commissioner of Larkana in 1940s, called Toshangi the Grand Canyon of Sindh. It is one of the most dramatic places to visit in the Kirthars. The deep gorge (700ft deep) is formed by the waters of Kenjhi River which has been flowing in the area since time untold. How to Get There:Toshangi is reached from Larkana. From Larkana a road goes westwards...

2008-05-08 01:00:00 I had not realized that being a fiction writer disqualified one from being able to write with authority on any real topic, as in the sense that a fiction writer = a liar; someone who just makes crazy stuff up. This was news to me, and my mind argumentatively ran through a random list of folks who had, despite their membership among the suspect fiction writer gang, managed to have a profound impact on the politics and society of their time and also to write worthwhile nonfiction (LeGuin, Swift, Defoe, Camus, Sartre, Zola, Cervantes, Dreiser, Hawthorne, Huxley, Koestler, Walker, and on and on; some of these people were likewise slammed for their work).

Artificial Flood in Grand Canyon
2008-03-06 05:25:00 On Wednesday, U.S. authorities started a man-made flood in the Grand Canyon in an attempt to restore the canyon's ecosystem. Three hundred thousand gallons (1,135,623 liters) of water per second gush from Arizona's Glen Canyon Dam during a media event on Wednesday. Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne pulled a lever releasing water from the Glen Canyon Dam, which regulates the flow of the Colorado River. He said the flooding is meant to help redistribute sediment deposits to rebuild beaches downstream.Completed in 1963, the Glen Canyon Dam did away with the river's natural spring floods and generally caused the water to become cooler and clearer, sending some native fish species to extinction. But, the superintendent of Grand Canyon National Park, Steve Martin fears there are non-environmental motives for this artificial flooding. He said to a newspaper that the timing was designed to please hydroelectric power producers. Link

National Geographic Loves UNM
2008-02-12 06:28:00 So I spent the evening mostly watching the National Geographic Channel and the show Naked Science. I was specifically watching the "Grand Canyon" and "The Rockies" episodes. Both of which were very good and interesting. It's funny because the two episodes made me very nostalgic for college. Why? Well, primarily because these two episodes were a virtual UNM love fest! That's right people, the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at UNM is full of experts on the southern Rocky Mountains and they shined quite well. First, there was Karl E. Karlstrom (as highlighted in the video below at about minute 2:40). Karl was my structural professor and I TA'd Advanced Field Camp for him. Then Laura Crossey appeared. Laurie was my undergraduate adviser, and guided me during my first attempts at research up in the Jemez Mountains. If you ever get the chance I suggest challenging her to a game of Horseshoes, she is a fierce competitor and professional trash talker. Finally, John Gei...

Mortgages, Committees, Foreclosures, The Grand Canyon
2007-12-09 20:50:00 There is an old saying among people that want to get things done but are roadblocked at every step along the way. One of the biggest roadblocks throw is “The Committee”. Are you familiar with the little rhyme: “Souls are dying what a pity, quick let’s form a new committee.” Well, we have seen in the news this week the results of a committee to help stem the tide of foreclosures due to all the ARM mortgages due to reset. After all that is the main reason we are seeing these high foreclosure rates ISN’T IT? From the Wall Steet Journal Blog This graph was taken from The Peridot Capitalist that got it from a Countrywide conference. But you can read about that at the Peridot Capitalist. So we have a lot of hubbub in the news about what this new program will do. We hear from some how it will cause great harm to the economy because of investors moving away from investing. At the same time we hear how this is going to really help stem the tide of forec...
The Grand Canyon of the South
2007-11-14 14:30:00 Breaks Interstate Park, located astride the SW Virginia/eastern Kentucky border along the Russell Fork of the Big Sandy River, is one of only two interstate parks in the nation. Perhaps the scale of the 5-mile-long, .25-mile-deep gorge that forms the park's centerpiece cannot rival that of the Grand Canyon, but the 250 million year old "Grand Canyon of the South" IS the largest gorge east of the Mississippi. The park takes its name from this gorge, which forms a “break” in Pine Mountain. Passes through these rugged mountains were called breaks by early settlers. Where the raging waters have carved the solid sandstone to break through Pine Mountain, nature has dressed the canyon walls in some of the region’s most spectacular scenery. Daniel Boone is credited with discovering The Breaks in 1767 as he attempted to find ever-improved trails into Kentucky and the Ohio River Valley beyond. Both he and Simon Kenton explored here in the last quarter of the 18th century. Because of e...

2007-05-14 21:58:00 Author: Eric Subject: The Grand Canyon & the Age of the Earth Posted: Mon May 14, 2007 3:58 pm (GMT -4) The Grand Canyon and the Age of the Earth Ray Bohlin, Ph.D. The Age of the Earth and Genesis 1 How old is the earth? How long has this planet been here? Ask most Christians this question and you will likely receive a quick, self-assured answer. All would be well if you could count on receiving the same answer! However, some will very quickly tell you that the earth was created during creation week and can be no more than six to ten thousand years old. Other Christians will tell you, with just as much confidence, that the earth is 4.5 billion years old. This is no minor discrepancy! What adds even more to the confusion is the fact that you can find both opinions within conservative evangelical circles. You can even find both opinions within the ranks of the few Christian geologists with Ph.D.s! Let me assure you that this is just as confusing for me as it is for you. ...
