Supreme Courts Decides, Graphic Novels Must be Called Comic Books
2008-04-28 01:46:00
The Justices ruled 8 to 1 on the controversial issue. Clarence Thomas strongly opposed. "Are you telling that, the Frank Miller Batman, were he has a hot young girl as Robin, is  not worthy to be called a novel, this is complete B.S." Thomas said before he went to his Washington D.C. apartment which he shares with Colin Powell. Many business are also worried that this decision may lead to violence. "We all have to deal with the guy who masturbates to Rogue from X-men, in the bathroom on his lunch   break, I sure don't want to be the one to tell him that he can no longer pick Punisher as a great character in literature, when we play celebrity at our Christmas party," said a concerned unnamed manager, of a local D.C. business.    The other  supreme  court justices,  are also concerned  for  judge  Thomas's  sanity over the issue. "Him and Colin don't seem to getting alone anymore, and he hasn...

Hmmm what cover should I use? One of the toughest decisions I have to make as a magazine editor is deciding what to put on the cover every month. Sure, that may not sound difficult in theory but it’s the cover - it’s the ’skin’ of the magazine, what people (potential readers) see first. Some may ...

Classic Literature As Graphic Novels
2007-10-19 02:56:00
I keep thinking I’d love to do a graphic novel adaptation of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream someday. Don’t know if that’ll ever happen, but I think it would be a lot of fun. Anyway, there’s a new publisher in Britain, Classical Comics focusing on graphic novel adaptations of classic literature, such as Macbeth, Henry V and Jane Eyre. It looks very promising and I hope they do well! Some of the artwork is pretty stunning. Technorati Tags: Books, Comics, Graphic Novels Novel, Literature

Graphic novels may be an opportunity for booksellers, but not if they're ma
2007-07-08 19:29:00
24-7 PressRelease publishes an article about how graphic novels could be an "explosive opportunity" for booksellers. Unfortunately, they send their whole arguement here down in flames with the following:Subject matter of the new genre runs the gamut from adult titles like Fun Home or Mom's Cancer to teen reads like American Born Chinese and Identity Crisis.Well well well, what a clever attempt at disguise - not! American Born Chinese may be a title suitable for teen/family, but Identity Crisis is only for the most perverted adults with a mind like a teenager. Putting a grisly book alongside one that's for the family and trying to pass it off as a teen book is dishonest and disgraceful.Another disgraceful mainstream article that does little more than to mislead the public, and families.

Graphic Novels
2007-03-21 18:06:00
Had an interesting proposition recently. My editor was running over one of my early scripts, one that did well in competitions, and told me that in her view it is not a film. It is either a graphic novel that may be made into a movie or its the feature length pilot for an original SciFi series. So. Hmm. Fuck me sideways! I spent about four months trying to figure out one of the devices used in that project and now I'm told 'yup it's good; but it's go so much going on in backstory that it deserves to be told in a more suited format.' So I spent a while researching the graphic novel forum. I know of a few guys who do that type of thing but I seem to have heard of the writers, not the artists! So now I found who I hope is my guy, Alex Ross. I spent a while surfing his website (click here) and was amazed at some of the examples. Is he they guy who can bring Nate to life? Absofuckinglutely! I used the contact page and left a short polite letter. I hope he gets back to me, bu...
Lesbian Graphic Novels: Fun House and 12 Days
2007-03-08 17:42:00
I read both of these graphic novels this week and, as soon as I put down the second of the two, I knew that I absolutely had to review them together as a compare/contrast. So, I'm shaking out my old Comparative Literature Major for today's review. It's a bit dusty, let's see how I do.Both Fun Home, by Alison Bechdel and 12 Days, by June Kim are stories written by lesbians about lesbians that are not lesbian narratives, really, at all. Both stories are more properly seen as narratives of grief, of relationships and of missed opportunities for communication and closeness.Alison Bechdel subtitled Fun Home a "Family Tragicomic" which suits it very well. It is indeed a graphic rendering of a family locked in tragedy, caught in moments from her life - and more importantly, from the life and death of her father. Alison tells her story through snatches of literature, photography, art, even her own diary from her childhood, in a series of repeated, but not repetitive looks at the relatio...
