Why Grassroots Initiatives Can't Fix Climate Change
2008-05-19 15:52:00 From Scientific American: Have you heard enough already about global warming? It's so ... last year's news! Plenty of people are "doing something" about it. Becoming carbon-neutral has gone as mainstream as Girl Scout cookies; help is on the way. Can we move on, please? Unfortun

5 tips for organizing grassroots film screenings
2008-04-15 17:50:00 At a recent Cinema Politica screening at Concordia University, Montreal, filmmaker and professor Liz Miller caught up with Svetla Turnin and yours truly to get our two cents on organizing grassroots political film screenings. She interviewed us at her very packed screening of her new documentary, The Water Front. For those unfamiliar with the project, Cinema Politica was started five years ago at Concordia and has grown into an alternative network for distributing and exhibiting independent cinema (with a focus on Canadian titles and documentaries). There are currently about 30 locals (chapters) in operation across Canaada, mostly at college and university campuses. Cinema Politica has also sprung up in Germany, France, and Romania. The first Cinema Politica "festival" will take place this May in Transylvania. überculture, the non-profit responsible for this here blog, is the organization behind the project. We started Cinema Politica to support independent political cinema as well...
Grassroots Advocacy on Exec Accountability ? and (surprise!) more on Bear

Grassroots Artists Create Ron Paul As A 3D Animation
2008-03-19 07:30:00 A group of grassroots artists have gotten together and created a 60-second TV promo for Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul. The spot--which looks like any scene from a high-quality, modern video game--utilizes portions of Ron Paul's past speeches, combined with high end computer animation and moving graphics to create scenes where a 3-D Ron Paul emerges from water, is surrounded by doves, is standing amongst money flying up into the air, and even appearing next to the founding fathers of the Constitution. It's impressive!!

Anonymous Wins Victory For Grassroots Organizations Everywhere
2008-03-14 11:57:00 Remember the anti-Church of Scientology group Anonymous? Apparently they're still around, still going strong, and still making the Church so nervous that they've filed lawsuits against the members of the group in a Florida court. According to the St. Petersburg Times article by Peter Farley, the Scientologist hierarchy filed for an "injunction for protection against repeat violence." This legal filing was done in anticipation of an upcoming Anonymous protest against the Church of Scientology in Clearwater. It would have essentially barred protesters from coming within 500 feet of the building. This is completely outrageous and exactly what the protesters are complaining about in the first place. Here is an effort by the Church to suppress the ability of dissenters to legally and peacefully protest on public sidewalks and public property surrounding the Church. Instead, they are trying to legally force the protesters to stand almost 1/10 of a mile away from the building, where the p...
Grassroots Philanthropy
2008-03-06 16:01:00 I would like to bring your attention to a thought-provoking book I just finished reading, Grassroots Philanthropy: Field Notes of a Maverick Grantmaker which was written by Bill Somerville the President of Philanthropic Ventures Foundation, with Fred Setterberg.I have to say, this was probably one of the most inspiring books I have ever read on the subject of Philanthropy. Bill Somerville, is an extremely compassionate individual who cares deeply for the world of giving.Bill has worked in the non-profit world for over 48 years, and in his book he shares some of his vast experience with us. I found his personal stories fascinating and his ideas for improving the world of Philanthropy inspiring! In one section of the book Bill talks about the Love of Humanity and breaks down the word Philanthropy into it's literal definition. Philanthropy - philos, Love; anthropy, Mankind. He suggests that Funders take time to go out into the community, to seek out potential change agents, and get ...

If this is grassroots politics, it?s time to xeriscape
2008-02-06 07:25:00 This morning I said I wasn’t going to caucus. I said that I couldn’t manage it with two kids, and still couldn’t decide whether Obama or Clinton was the better choice. This evening, with much help from one of our commenters (Djerred) and his wife, who took one of my kids off my hands for the evening even as they were caucusing too, I was able to caucus myself. I realized on the way home that, if I didn’t at least try, if I didn’t at least give the Obama and Clinton supporters a chance to plead their case, I’d kick myself tomorrow. Caucusing tonight was the worst voting experience I’ve ever had, and I may never caucus again because of it. I think that the single biggest problem is that the Broomfield County Democrats were totally unprepared for the number of caucus-goers they had. They had prepared for 800-1000 attendees and had at least 2000 attendees. Because of this, their choice of a local high school cafeteria was woefully insuffici...

CCTV: Steve Dickinson On China's Grassroots Democracy
2007-12-24 01:37:00 Got the following email yesterday from a client: When I checked into my old, Soviet-style Moscow hotel the other night, I was tired from a day of Aeroflot and decided to surf the TV for something to numb my brain. The only English-language channel on the hotel's TV was CCTV9 from China. The first image that flashed on the screen was Dickinson on a talk show discussing grassroots democracy in China! It was a bizarre Russian travel moment! I then did an internet search and found this video of CLB co-blogger, Steve Dickinson on CCTV, described by CCTV as follows: Guests: Wang Xuewen, Former Deputy President, International Business Daily Steven M. Dickinson, Harris & Moure After the success of village elections in China's rural area, the talk about grassroots democracy in China's cities is also attracting a lot of attention. During the show, Steve talks about elections in rural Shandong province and how interest in democracy is greater in China's rural areas than in its cities...

Reid pulls FISA bill from Congress, backs down from Dodd and the grassroots
2007-12-18 03:10:00 The headline says it all…threatened with a filibuster and after eight hours of angry, eloquent debate on the vileness of supporting warrantless wiretapping and amnesty for lawbreaking telecom companies, Harry Reid has pulled the FISA reauthorization from the calendar for this Congressional session. Make no mistake–this bill will be back next year. Protection for AT&T and Verizon is too high a priority for Bush, Mike McConnell, and the other enablers like Harry Reid. But the battlefield will be very different next time around. Next time the momentum will be on the side of Chris Dodd, Russ Feingold, the ten Democratic Senators who voted against cloture, the many committed bloggers and activists who rallied the forces, and the thousands of committed Americans who wrote, sent e-mails, signed petitions, and made phone calls to stop this travesty of justice from becoming law. Plus, Clinton, Obama, and Biden–all of whom pledged to support Dodd–will have seen how...

Kucinich Launches Nationwide Grassroots Effort to Mobilize Popular Backing
2007-11-05 17:11:00 The Democratic Presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich has launched a nationwide media and grassroots effort to mobilize strong popular backing for his latest impeachment offensive against Vice-president Dick Cheney. He said in a statement that he would be taking calls later today from supporters, the media, political activists and interested citizens from all over the nation to explain why and how he plans to force an up-or-down vote in the U.S. House of Representatives on the impeachment resolution against Cheney. Last week, the Ohio congressman released a statement announcing that he will be offering a privileged resolution on the House floor this week that will bring articles of impeachment against Cheney. The momentum is building for impeachment,? Kucinich said in the statement. ?Millions of citizens across the nation are demanding Congress rein in the Vice President?s abuse of power. ?Despite this groundswell of opposition to the unconstitutional conduct of office, Vice Pres...
MSNBC: Paul Gets Chill From the GOP Establishment But Wows the Grassroots;
2007-10-30 17:59:00 Rip Van Winkle slept for 20 years and woke to find the world had passed him by. Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, woke up one morning recently to find that perhaps America has caught up with him. Paul, 72, has had a 32-year career in the House. But some voters have just now discovered Paul?s constitutionalist, individualist, ?just bring all the troops home? creed. This weekend in Iowa, Paul, running for the Republican presidential nomination, was greeted by 700 whooping fans at Iowa State University in Ames and another 300 at a rally in Des Moines. ?There is something rather amazing about the Internet,? he told his Ames supporters, about two-thirds of whom appeared to be under age 25. ?I?ve been used to delivering a message very similar to what I?m delivering tonight for many, many years and not getting a whole lot of responses. And all of a sudden, there?s a whole generation of people now very excited about hearing about the message of freedom.? 'Practically miraculous' ?I think i...

ABC News: "Rep. Ron Paul's story is that of a bona fide grassroots sensatio
2007-10-06 21:34:00 Rep. Ron Paul's story is that of a bona fide grassroots sensation. Paul, of Texas, is the only Republican contender to post notable fund-raising gains last quarter, managing to pull in $5 million-- mostly online and a lot of it from our troops. His fundraising puts him on par with John McCain. Paul is a Republican who is fining himself standing alone on a few issues, most notably his call for an end of the war, breaking with the views of the president and his party faithful, and he doesn't mince words on the topic. "I don't think it's complicated," Paul said. "I mean, we just went in and we went in erroneously. We went in without the proper authority. We went in under a false pretense and all the conditions that were claimed didn't exist. It's going badly. So I think we should just leave." He added that he thinks keeping troops in Iraq is only going to make the conditions worse. "It endangers us," Paul said. "It increases the danger of terrorism. There used to be 6...
The Grassroots of Scientific Revolution
2007-09-23 05:19:00 Rejection of authority and working-class values inspired the scientific method.Drawing by Renaissance physician VesaliusAs everyone knows, when food is digested it is processed into chyle and turned into blood by the liver. This blood then flows to the lungs where it releases any impurities into the air. Flowing from the lungs into the left ventricle of the heart the blood then mixes with air and is charged with animal spirit ? where it changes from dark purple to bright red. This charged blood then passes through the arteries and throughout the body.At least, if you had lived anywhere in the Western world up until the early 1600s this would have been common knowledge. This system developed between 150 and 200 AD by the Greek physician Galen was viewed as medical dogma by centuries of physicians and professors to follow. The revolution that accompanied the rejection of Aristotelian physics with Copernicus, Kepler and Galileo found its biological equivalent in the work of physic...

Washington Post: Ron Paul's Grassroots Organization is the Key to His Straw
2007-09-09 17:57:00 A curious thing happened this year at the Maryland Republican Party booth at the State Fair: A GOP presidential straw poll was won by Ron Paul, the idiosyncratic congressman from Texas who is a fierce critic of the Iraq war. Perhaps just as curious was the Maryland GOP's decision to trumpet the results in a news release last week with the headline: "Maryland GOP Presidential Straw Poll Is a Big Success; Grassroots Candidate Wins Surprise Upset." According to the release, Paul received 263 votes, and former New York mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani (for whom Republican former governor Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. is toiling) was second with 220 votes. (Ehrlich received three write-in votes.) Former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson-- who had yet to declare his candidacy -- finished third with 188 votes. No other candidate cracked 100 votes. All told, nearly 1,000 people cast ballots in the Maryland GOP's first-ever presidential straw poll at the fair. The party said the straw poll was open to e...
String of Sex Scandals, Resignation of Top Figures , Grassroots Disillusion
2007-09-02 01:56:00 A Senate electoral playing field that was already wide open for 2008 has become considerably more perilous for Republicans with the retirement of Sen. John W. Warner (R-Va.) and the resignation of Sen. Larry E. Craig (R-Idaho). Republicans need a net gain of just one seat to take back control of the Senate, but they have 22 seats to defend, and campaign cash is conspicuously lacking. Warner's retirement raised to two the number of open Republican seats, and both of them -- in Virginia and Colorado -- are prime targets for Democrats. With former Democratic senator Bob Kerrey possibly waiting in the wings, Republicans are anxiously watching to see of Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.) will retire. And two more Republican seats open for reelection -- in Wyoming and Idaho -- would be occupied by unelected appointees, John Barrasso and Craig's replacement. "The state of the playing field looks very good, even in places where we didn't expect it to look good, even in deeply red states," sai...

Ron Paul's Campaign Driven by Internet and Grassroots Support
2007-08-28 02:10:00 Don't try and argue this point. Ron Paul is "da bomb" on the Internet! LOL! OMG! If you don't understand these initials, ask your teenager or look them up here. Here's more on Ron Paul's Internet fascination and support: Though Paul polls 2 to 3 percent nationally - far from the double digits recorded by former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, ex-Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, former U.S. Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee and U.S. Sen. John McCain of Arizona - he has singular success on the Internet. Paul easily laps the GOP field in numbers of people who watch his YouTube videos, "friend" him on MySpace, or mobilize volunteers through groups on Meetup.com. "We are way beyond anything I ever dreamed about, first on the Internet and then translating that into fund-raising and translating that into volunteers," Paul said before taking part in a parade. The Internet has been a campaign cash-generating tool, accounting for 80 percent of the $3 million Paul raised by midyear - ...
Ron Paul is Reviving Grassroots Politics
2007-08-13 02:40:00 It is truly extraordinary: Ron Paul?s campaign stops are attracting crowds that would make the other Republicans envious. His supporters make homemade T-shirts, flyers, yard signs, and more. Ron Paul fans drive hundreds of miles to hear their candidate speak without giving the matter a second thought. On the Internet he wins poll after poll ? provoking accusations that Paul supporters are spamming them. Leaving aside the difficulty of doing such a thing (in some polls) or managing to do it without being detected (in others), this objection misses the point. Check out the raw numbers rather than the percentages the next time you see one of these polls. The real question, it seems to me, isn?t why Ron Paul gets thousands of votes, but why only a few hundred people can be bothered to turn on their computers and make a single click on behalf of the clones in the race.
Blogpac Announces Contest to Seed the Grassroots

It can be national, regional or local. It can focus on media, culture, social networking, direct action, research, elections, messaging and much more. It can work to expand the audience of progressive radio, book more progressives appear as commentators on cable news networks, or find ways for progressive bloggers to have access to health care. It can produce strategy guides for grassroots activists run for party office, train a new generation of activists in civil disobedience tactics, or help produce a progressive documentary. The only requirements to be considered for the contest are as follows: The project ...
Moving Towards the Semantic Web: Grassroots vs. Ivory Towers
2007-07-04 03:13:00 The most pertinent issue surrounding the Semantic Web is why it has not yet gained strong traction from the development community. First, when I say grassroots I'm referring to the initiative of people like you and I to create the Semantic Web from the bottom-up. The ivory towers is the W3C and their initiative to create the Semantic Web. Both groups are pivotal to the acceptance and adoption of new standards and technologies. Without grassroots initiatives we would not have adoption and without the W3C we would not have standards (which we all have learned the Web most certainly requires). The Semantic Web is in a sticky place right now. There are people like us (grassroots) that have invested great interest in the Semantic Web and some (myself included) believe it to be the natural evolution of the Web. Aside from human nature the problem is that there really aren't that many of us when compared to the adoption of more wildly popular development paradigms such as Web 2.0. The...

Senator Obama Yields to Grassroots Pressure, Says No to Dirty Coal-to-Liqui

Environmentalists and progressive groups have been hitting Senator Obama with petitions and letters recently, arguing that coal would produce a dirty alternative fuel and exacerbate global warming pollution at a time when we cannot afford to adopt a more carbon-intensive replacement for gasoline. Lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions for CTL synthetic fuels are up to twice as high as gasoline if emissions at CTL plants are not captured and sequestered. Even if carbon capture and storage technology is utilized at a CTL plant, the lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions of CTL synthetic fuels range from only moderately better to slightly worse than gasoline. Message from the Draft Hagel Movement
2007-05-18 04:23:00 This message brought to you by the Draft Hagel 08 Movement:What is the purpose of a draft movement? To create a buzz, a groundswell of support, to influence a decision. We do not care which party the candidate desires to represent, only that he/she is the right person for the job. This is what we need to do. We cannot wait for a decision, and then jump into action. We need to be in action to influence a decision. At this point in time, Senator Hagel is focused on his job as a US Senator, as he should be. While he thinks about a decision to run, it is the job of Draft Hagel 08 movement supporters to show him that the energy is out there to ensure that a decision to enter the Presidential race has the potential to be successful.Looking at the direction and future of our country, it is hard to imagine that doing so could ever be considered a waste. From Grassroots to Global Networks: Cinema Politica & the Cultural Reprise
2007-05-12 21:31:00 IntroThe theatre seats about 700, and the screen is a massive 17? x 36? extravagance of colour and light. It is the kind of exhibition space for which most independent doc makers would give an eyetooth. On one memorable night in Montreal, the images were of horribly injured Haitians. It was the world premiere of Haiti: The Untold Story (2005, Kevin Pena, dir.), an accusation and indictment of peacekeeping practices in Haiti. Pena had arrived that day in Canada with his documentary, only just edited, secure and hidden on the hard drive of his laptop. He had never seen it on a large screen, let alone shown it to anyone outside of Haiti. In the audience, in response to the difficult images, members of the Montreal Haitian community began wailing high-pitched vibrato screams. The impact of the film combined with the voluble outrage of those most intimately affected created an intense experience for everyone in the audience. It demonstrated the extraordinary power of political ci...

Obama Rising -- The 21st Century Grassroots Campaign

So many things are being done at the grassroots level, leveraging the power of the internet. Since Obama officially declared his candidacy in Springfield, Illinois, the following has happened:3,306 grassroots volunteer groups have been founded and attracted tens of thousands of members who are organizing online and offline4,416 personal fundraising pages have been established, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars in small contributions6,706 people have created their own Obama blogs and begun chronicling why they are supporting Barack and their campaign experience38,799 people have created profiles in Obama's official website and started networking with other supporters in their community and across the countryMost of the above was possible because of the quick development and launching of Obama's official ...
