The Five Greeks of Options

Just got back from Vancouver, in town for three days and then off to Newfoundland on Friday morning to complete my Canadian coast-to-coast tour. :)You may have heard people talking about the "Beta" of a portfolio before, but option pricing sensitivity takes into account many more letters of the Greek alphabet: Delta, Gamma, Vega, Theta and Rho. Here is a brief explanation of each - and I will expound on them in the future in separate posts. All five "Greeks" are factors that affect option contract theoretical values:Delta: Is the amount of change in the theoretical value of the option contract for every $1 change in price of the underlying stock.Gamma: Is the amount of change in the Delta for every $1 change in price of the underlying stock. So in other words, it is the rate of change in Delta (similar to how acceleration relates to speed - acceleration is the rate of change of speed).Vega: Is the amount of change in the theoretical value of the option contract fo...
Beware Of Greeks Bearing Rifts

The symbiotic relationship between tedious liberal intelligentsia blowhard Huff Post Arianna Stassinopoulos Huffington and NBC News appears to be over. Keith J. Kelly NYP Arianna Huffington claims that she was banished from NBC News shows because her new book, "Right is Wrong," blasted "Meet the Press" anchor Tim Russert. Huffington is the force behind the Huffington Post, an influential political Web site where she had started a blog called "Russert Watch." Her new book, which is slated to hit later this week carries the sub title, "How the Lunatic Fringe Hijacked America, Shredded the Constitution and Made Us All Less Safe." Aside from being the anchor, Russert is also the managing editor of the show, the Washington Bureau Chief of NBC News and a senior vice president of NBC News. Huffington dubs him "EZ Pass" Russert because she claims his softball questions give the Washington elite a free wave-through when they appear on his shows. While he may ask a tough opening question, he ...

An Interesting NE Asian Phenotype
2008-01-25 10:26:00
The latest death toll figures from Hurricane Katrina can be seen on this website here. The famous Russian neo-Nazi video is on this blog here.Updated January 28:White Nationalists like to go on and on and on about the glorious color of their skin: white. For some odd reason, this white skin is superior to darker-colored skins of folks who evolved in hotter zones. Truth is, darker skin color is a perfectly rational evolutionary response to high rates of UV radiation in areas where it is very hot.And in some areas of the globe, people can have fairly light skins if they stay out of the sun, but they get dark quite easily if they go out in the sun. Italians and Greeks come to mind. Here are photos of Italians, Greeks and Spaniards who have stayed out of sun, and then the same folks after they got tanned. The same page also shows identical phenotypes commonly seen as European-only, like Nordics, Mediterraneans and Alpines, in both their European and extra-European forms from Arabia, Nort...

10 Reasons why Greeks could not be responsible for Sept. 11
2007-12-27 19:32:00
10. 8:45am is too early for them to be up. 9. They are always late, they would have missed all 4 flights. 8. Pretty people on the plane distract them. 7. They would talk loudly and bring attention to themselves. 6. Food and drinks were on the plane. 5. They talk with their hands, they would probably have put their weapons down. 4. They would all want to fly the plane. 3. They would argue and start a fight in the plane. 2. They would have told everyone a week before doing it. 1. They would have put the Greek flag on the windshield.

Options Trading - Blessed Are the Greeks - Part I
2007-11-06 09:58:00
The Greeks have long been extolled for their extensive contributions to establishing elementary mathematics. It was the modern Greeks, however, who created the tools that aid options traders to quantify risk and calculate prices. Among these tools, one that rises above the others are the quantities known as “The Greeks.” They are delta, theta, gamma and vega. The underlying mathematics regarding this tool is quite complex, but the basic concepts are simple. They can be used by any trader as a method of measuring risk and maximizing profits. The Greeks are founded on the basis of particular variables that affect the price of an option. Much of this is common sense. For example, the determinants are the underlying asset’s market price, the option strike price, the time left to expiration, volatility and short term interest rates. This data is easy to acquire so it is a logical assumption that it plays a part in an option’s value. The strike price is a pr...

Islam, the Greeks and the Scientific Revolution
2007-10-07 18:52:00
I have written a couple of essays regarding the Greek impact on the rise of modern science, and why the Scientific Revolution didn’t happen in the Islamic world. I find this to be an interesting topic, especially since there are so many myths regarding this perpetrated by Muslims and their apologists today, so I will ...
Position on Race
2007-09-26 09:53:00
Well, they are doing it again. Like the trash trucks that roll around on schedule, come rain or shine, this blog gets bashed as racist on a regular basis by people whose brains don't work right. On the one hand, to the White Nationalists, I hate Whites and love non-Whites. On the other hand, I'm a White Supremacist who hates non-Whites. On the one hand, I'm an Arab-lover who hates Jews. On the other hand, I'm a Jew-lover who hates Arabs. On the one hand, I'm a Greek-lover who hates Turks. On the other hand, I'm a Turk-lover who hates the Greeks. As such, this blog will take a position on racism. Hopefully, this will be our last position on this issue. Why be racist? Any given individual of any race or ethnic group, no matter their particular mix of genes, culture, choices and life history may quite possibly, and often does, possess the moral character and decency that one (or at least I) might desire in a friend, acquaintance, contact, or even, if you find that race or ethnic g...
The Greeks make me feel like a Goddess
2007-08-30 03:32:00
One of my favorite beauty products is a little thing called lotion... I just love it!I slather my hands, elbows, feet and knees at least 10 times a day. And I love thick, souffle-type lotions that have a subtle yet fresh aroma. I'm into vanillas, coconuts, avocados (although I'm not quite sure how an avocado is really supposed to smell - it seems like a pretty odorless fruit!), anything that isn't too perfumed. My current fave is Korres's Body Butters! They come in four delightful scents - Fig, Guava (my favorite), yogurt and quince - and a splendid pump (I just love products in pumps!) It's not light like most lotions, this moisturizer is heavy duty - it's like a butter but one that pumps easily...Loving it!

Tough-minded pundit Arianna Huffington may have found a politician she approves of. Word is that the Huffington Post founder has been quietly dating Newark Mayor Cory Booker. Huffington didn't respond to several e-mails. Hizzoner's spokeswoman told us, "We don't comment on his personal life." Huffington was an early supporter of Booker in the Rhodes scholar's battle to unseat longtime Newark boss Sharpe James. Booker has contributed several posts to her blog. One person bound to take an interest in the talk is TV reporter (and Oprah pal) Gayle King, who has regularly turned up on Booker's arm at events where Huffington is also a guest. [NY Daily News]Arianna is 20 years older than the 38-year-old mayor. Here's what they have in common. Brains. The Greek Arianna got a master's degree in economics from Cambridge. Successful author. The black Booker is a Rhodes scholar. Yale law. Stanford grad and undergrad. Nothing like f***king someone's brains out.The liberal brain trust was ...

Today, I saw a carpet measurer do his job. He was drawing room layouts, and kneeling down to measure lengths and widths, with the grace I expected from a beer-bellied man who has plumber’s butt. It looked like a high school geomtery problem, and reminded me of why I choose to study applied mathematics ...
Black and Scholes - The Greeks Part III

Indo-Greeks
2007-04-04 22:08:00
Indo-Greeks Silver coin depicting the Greco-Bactrian king Demetrius (r.c. 205-171 BC). Main article: Indo-Greek kingdom The Indo-Greek Kingdom (or sometimes Greco-Indian Kingdom) covered various parts of northwest and northern India from 180 BC to around 10 AD, and was ruled by a succession of more than thirty Greek kings, often in conflict with each other. The kingdom was founded when the Greco-Bactrian king Demetrius invaded India in 180 BC, ultimately creating an entity which seceded from the powerful Greco-Bactrian Kingdom centred in Bactria (today's northern Afghanistan).
Greeks to Repeal Gay Blood Ban
2007-03-07 02:55:00
Organizers of a greek week event at Iowa State University have decided against awarding points towards a community service trophy to fraternities and sororities that participate in this weeks blood drive on campus because current FDA guidelines prevent gay men from being able to participate due to an "increased risk of receiving blood that contains HIV." The Blood Center of Iowa is expected to loose up to 500 units of blood, which is particularly bad news for Iowans considering that recent bad weather has resulted in the cancellation of several blood drives and stored blood levels are low. "We don't want to endorse events that don't give equal opportunity to all of our members," said ISU senior Courtney Knupp, the general co-chairwoman who oversees activities during Greek Week. Not surprisingly it was the gay fraternity Delta Lambda Phi that petitioned the organizers to withhold points usually given for blood donations. "We've been trying to raise this issue for a long time,...
IT MAY BE ILLEGAL, BUT THE GREEKS LOVE ONLINE GAMBLING
2006-12-28 13:00:02
Online gambling set to expand Greek gamblers spend over Euro 8.5 billion a year on their passion for gambling, the Greek news medium Kathimerini reported this week, commenting that growing amounts are being spent on online casinos, lotteries and other forms of illegal online gambling. About Euro 3 billion will be spent in all of the country’s nine casinos in 2007 while annual turnover booked by OPAP, one of the largest companies listed on the Athens Stock Exchange, is around the Euro 3.5 billion mark. Experts said that a combination of slick marketing campaigns and a shift in community values has fueled demand for gambling. The number of visitors heading to casinos is expected to nearly double during the festive season. Data shows that the Loutraki casino, west of Athens, is visited by about 3 000 people daily but the figure shoots up to around 5 000 around Christmas. Meanwhile, punters turning to illegal electronic gambling are spending almost Euro1.5 billion per year on thei...
