How Green Building Studio Works
2012-04-06 12:31:00
"Autodesk Green Building Studio is a web-based service that provides building energy and carbon analysis results of your project. Green Building Studio interoperates with Revit® Architecture and Revit® MEP software, as well as other compatible energy-analysis software via add-ins that are available for download from the Green Building Studio downloads page. The computationally intensive hourly simulations are carried out on remote servers, and the results are provided to you in a web browser. The Green Building Studio web-based service analysis process collects data from three sources: Your Revit® software model. All the building geometry comes from your model, including the number of rooms, the connections between rooms, and their relationship to the exterior, exposure, and aspect to the sun; and the shape and total area of built surfaces or openings. If you are using Revit MEP you can also specify space types, interior loads, constructions, and HVAC equipment. Your ...

Reclaimed Tiny House Built by Students
2010-12-21 20:27:00
Tiny houses are popping up all over the country. Students at Green Mountain College built one with reclaimed materials last semester. They spent $1,927 on materials, acquiring insulation at half price and lumber and windows from the local salvage store. The 8-foot by 12-foot house still needs a solar-powered electrical system, which will be installed early next year. When complete, the tiny house will be off-grid. Rainwater from a low corner of the roof will be collected and processed in...

Going green - Building an environment-friendly home in the Caribbean
2008-05-26 16:49:00
Photography courtesy OBMAbout two weeks ago, the 12th Annual Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Investment Conference (CHTIC) was hosted in Port of Spain, Trinidad at the Hyatt Regency Trinidad Hotel and Conference Centre. ?Going Green?, something on the minds of forward-looking developers, was the running theme this year.In the current issue of MACO Caribbean Living, we take a look at how you can go green when decorating your home, so that you too can be environmentally conscious and elegant in creating a charming ambience. In the article ?Greening with style?, interior designer Melanie Wuilliez tells homeowners how they can save the environment without scrimping on style. Nowadays, there are many options available for greening your home. Environmentally friendly materials are the mode of the day.In the Caribbean, owners tend to gravitate toward tile and/ or wood. Tile made of natural stones help to keep a cool temperature in the home, reducing the need for air-conditioning. Wuilliez says...

New initiatives launched to promote Singapore green building movement By Wong Siew Ying, SINGAPORE: The green building movement in Singapore has gained momentum and the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) hopes to spur it further by enhancing its Green Mark Incentive Scheme. At the BCA awards ceremony on Thursday, City Developments was named Singapore’s first Green Mark Champion. This new award is given to developers and building owners who have at least ten projects that have attained the BCA Green Mark Gold and Platinum standards. However, BCA was unable to find a winner for the ultimate prize – the Green Mark Champion Platinum Award, which requires developers to have at least 50 eco-friendly projects to qualify. Among the 97 winners at this year’s BCA award ceremony, three CityDev projects secured the Green Mark Platinum prize. They are 9 Tampines Grande, Cliveden at Grange and The Solitaire. They were evaluated based on several criteria, with more weightage p...

Get Green Building Certified
2008-05-04 10:09:00
How difficult is it to be considered a Green building? One of the issues of our hour is that businesses have been encouraged to "Go Green." Unfortunately, they have not been told what Green represents unless you consider an extensive list of ecological and environmental changes is the answer. Actually, it appears that the idea of a Green building has been usurped and taken to every possible extreme.

Gutters and Rain Barrels
2008-04-30 03:30:00
It has been pouring rain here for two days and it reminded me about how many homes I see around here with significant water damage. One of my biggest recommendations to clients when they build a new home is to invest in good gutters. The conversation typically turns to the home owner telling me that having gutters in New England is a bad idea because of the snow and ice. I'll leave that arguement / disagreement for another post but I will say that I use them and I never have trouble with ice and snow. The reason that I strongly recommend gutters is simple. An average 1,000 sq. ft. roof will produce over 600 gallons of water from 1 inch of rain! So without gutters you now have 600 gallons of water splashing against your house after it hits the ground and soaking into the ground along your foundation. Now it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out all the problems that can arise from all this water hitting your house and sitting around your foundation. The first solution is t...

L.A. adopts mandatory “green building” ordinance
2008-04-24 03:00:00
Environmentally sensitive practices will be mandatory for large new developments in Los Angeles. City Council adopted rules this week that will require all major projects — at or above 50,000 square feet or 50 residential units — to comply with the U.S. Green Building Council’s general “Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design” standards, according to a city news release. Builders committing to LEED “silver” accreditation will get expedited processing by the Planning and Public Works Department. The law would also cover major renovations and low-rise developments of 50 units or more. The news release quotes Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa as saying: “Our City is growing fast and growing up, and we’re holding the private sector accountable to their commitment to be friends to our environment. Already the City of Los Angeles has the largest, most aggressive municipal green building plan of any large city in America. Now it’s time for green b...
Earth Day 2008

April 22nd is Earth Day. Why not take some time today to think of a new way to help out mother earth. Maybe you can start recycling, maybe you can start using more energy efficient light bulbs, maybe you can buy Energy Star rated appliances, maybe you can choose Green Building products for your next remodeling project, maybe you can use low flow shower heads, sink faucets and toilets, maybe you can make a difference. If we all take one small step each year there will certainly be a positive effect on our environment.Tags: home improvement, home improvement blog, environment, energy efficiency, energy star, green building
Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs
2008-04-20 21:10:00
I've finally decided to jump on board and try Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs (CFL) in my new home. Today I bought three GE Energy Smart 20 watt CFL's. The 20 watt CFL is equivalent to a 75 watt incandescent light bulb. These new bulbs are supposed to last 6 years or 10,000 hours of operation. An incandescent light bulb typically only lasts about 750 hours. That means you'd need 14 incandescent bulbs to each fluorescent bulb. The cost of the bulb is payed for just comparing bulbs not even considering the energy savings.Obviously using these bulbs is a great way to start living "green". Some may argue that the Mercury contained in them poses a significant environmental issue, however, with proper education people will realize that they need to be disposed of properly. These bulbs are also energy star certified.I put three of these in an overhead light fixture in our breakfast nook and I was quite impressed. The color of the light has improved drastically and the bulbs come on almo...

Green building for a healthier living and working conditions environmentall

The initiative aims not only to protect the environment and conserve resources like water and energy, but also offer a place safer for humans to live when you decide to build a house environmentally friendly, you must form a team who are certified experts in the field of green buildings, and can ensure that every aspect of your structure is green. This means that the architect who is designing your home to the interior designer who is adding the finishing touches to your home, everyone must be on the same page on the appearance of green buildings. Such a project must include these features very important to make it green, it must promote sustainability in every sense, and it must conserve energy and water in the construction process as well as in the conception of reality. Universities Drive Green Building
2008-03-07 02:46:00
As the green building revolution gains traction on the local level, moving well ahead of any effort on the federal level save what departments and agencies can undertake on their own, one of the unsurprising leaders in the movement are America's colleges and universities. Even community and technical colleges appear to be getting into the act at a much higher rate than other portions of the public sphere. A photoblog by Guy Kawasaki at How To Change The World showcases some of the green building features of a new structure on Stanford's campus which he boasts to be just as smart as the people who it houses. Features include south-facing windows with light shelves that push natural light deeper into the building, wide open atriums, rooftop photovoltaic solar panels, and a rather novel flushing routine that helps to conserve water. Stanford is one among many universities building green, not as demonstrators for cleaner techniques and technologies, but as a sincere effort to ...

Ciputra ask for establishment of green building rules
2008-03-02 12:33:00
Indonesian property tycoon Ciputera asked the Jakarta administration to set up fixed rules on the application of "green building" designs to help reduce energy consumption and save the earth, local English newspaper theJakarta Post reported on Sunday. Because the cost of green building designs is 10 times higher than the normal building construction, entrepreneurs can not run the green program by themselves without the supports from the government, Ciputra said. But to apply for rules on green building is very crucial for Jakarta, capital of Indonesia, which has few green areas and faces serious pollution problems. "Indonesia is far behind other countries like Singapore, Malaysia and South American countries, where it's not hard to find green-roof programs and parts on top of sky-scrapers," Ciputera was quoted by the newspaper as saying. Ciputera, 77, is a Chinese-Indonesan entrepreneur who has developed more than 40 shopping centers, housing complexes and townships in Indo...

Promoting Green Building
2008-02-17 04:36:00
Green building seems to be getting a lot of attention lately. Maybe not the way alternative fuels and hybrid powertrains are, in front of the general public, but green building seems to be generating all the right interest in all the right venues to make a genuine difference going forward. The latest example comes from the International Builders' Show in Orlando, Florida this weekend. With this past Thursday marked as green day at the expo, organizers hoped to bring dramatic focus to the realities and potential of alternative energy, energy efficiency, and deep green in the construction industry. Florida Today mentions that the National Association of Home Builders took advantage of the occasion to announce the National Green Building Program, which promotes 'green' building techniques and materials. The NAHB has no doubt found, as many of its members have, that promoting the green aspects of their business is a good way to boost sales in these uncertain economic time...

Green Building In Practice
2008-02-14 03:48:00
One of the exciting things about watching the green building revolution is seeing the various ways in which those seeking to save energy and reduce emissions are going about their business. Not every wish list technology is ripe yet--I could take my home off the grid right now if there were such a thing as 50% efficient photovoltaic solar panels. Sadly, those are in the infancy of research, as are other technologies to make less efficient solar solutions work. But still, people are building green and getting their projects LEED-certified. How are they doing it? NW Arkansas News goes into fascinating detail on one such project, a mutli-building office development in Bentonville, the home of Wal-Mart, that will likely serve vendors coming into town to display their wares for the big buyers in the Walton family empire. One of the big focuses of the project was that of materials--bamboo flooring, for instance, using a material that grows dramatically faster than wood and thus is...

The Green Building Revolution, a Book Giveaway
2008-02-08 07:54:00
I really hate to do this, but I'm giving away a new, autographed copy of a book that I really like.  You know the drill:  leave a comment, and after 48 hours, I'll pick a winner based on the number of your comment.*  This book is particularly hard to let go, because I keep referring back to it for different pieces of information.  It's called The Green Building Revolution by Jerry Yudelson.  Yudelson is a serious expert in the industry and maintains an information-rich website at www.greenbuildconsult.com -- plug it into the feed, you'll be happy you did.  The book itself is loaded up with information, but it's not a chore to read.  It's accessible on the one hand and super thorough on the other.  Seems hard to do, but Yudelson finds a way to deliver the straight facts without leaving you lost.  Particularly, I was engrossed by three chapters:  the business case for green buildings, the costs of green buildings, and the future ...
