$500 million green car fund could come early
2008-06-09 19:54:00
The Federal government’s promised $500 million green car fund could come earlier than its 2011 start date to encourage Australian manufacturers to speed up production of a locally made hybrid car, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd says. The announcement comes after the NSW Premier volunteered his government’s fleet as the first customer for a locally manufactured hybrid. ...

The karma of lithium ion batteries: how Tibet plays a role in green car tec
2008-03-31 03:26:00
The recent Tibetan independence demonstrations and the Chinese response have, in this Olympic year, turned the eyes of the world towards the "roof of the world." There have been some who have called for the boycott of the Olympic games and Chinese products as a result of the harshness of the "crackdown". Our own president has even gotten involved and has asked the Chinese Premier, Hu-Jintao, to hold talks between the the Dali Lama's representatives and the Chinese government, though I suspect even the suggestion of such a rapproachment wasn't warmly received. What does any of this have to do with more-environmentally-sensitive- transportation? Well, I came across this article recently that informed me that the source of much of the lithium in the batteries that power our laptops, cell phones and soon, our hybrid and electric cars, is mined at the Chabyer Salt Lake in the Tibetan Autonomous Region. This is the largest source of known lithium reserves in the world, according to the Ch...
Thai Pushes ?Green? Car Production

Thai government is giving incentives to encourage the production of ‘green’ cars. According to experts, the incentives have yielded a raft of major investments in the territory and started to alter how Thais drive. ‘Green’ tax breaks were introduced in Thailand last year. This is an effort of the nation as the world’s largest manufacturer of ...
2008 World Green Car Award: BMW 118d
2008-03-25 17:40:00
BMW brought its not-for-sale-in-America 118d five-door to New York City to claim the 2008 World Green Car award... and that's probably the only time we'll ever see the thing on US soil.Immediately following the event, BMW packed up the car and put it on the boat back to Deutschland. The BMW 118d is a great car. There's room inside for five, it looks pretty good, and it lovingly adheres to BMW's rear-wheel-drive Ultimate Driving Machine philosophy. What garnered it the World Green Car award, however (beating such rivals as the not-for-sale-in-America Volkswagen Passat 1.9TDI and the not-for-sale-in-America Smart ForTwo CDI), sits under the hood: its 2.0-liter direct-injection turbodiesel four-cylinder engine. In the 118d, this engine makes 141 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque. It will prod the car to 60 mph in about 8.8 seconds, returning 59 mpg on the (foreign) highway and spewing only 118 grams of CO2 per kilometer into the (non-US) atmosphere. Not bad at all. And yet, d...

New York 2008: So, ?bout those green car ads - IAG sits down with AutoblogG
2008-03-21 23:13:00
Sallie Hirsch, left, and Lois Miller. One of the quieter announcements from the New York Auto Show was that a Subaru ad called Soul of Subaru - Values won the Green Award from Intermedia Advertising Group (IAG). The ad won not because a panel of judges thought it was the best but because IAG discovered, based on customer research panels, that this particular ad was the most effective. This meant that the ads left more viewers with the idea that Subaru was a green car company than anything else on TV last year. This week, I spoke with Sallie Hirsch, senior vice president of automotive research, and Lois Miller, president of IAG Automotive, to figure out not only why and how this commercial won (Subaru's overall clean message played a big role) but about TV green car advertising in general. While average, non-green ads still dominate the airwaves, there were more green car ads in 2007 than ever before. Not the most surprising bit of informatin, but well worth keeping an eye on. IAG do...

DiMora Natalia SLS 2: the $2m ?green? car
2008-03-13 15:29:00
Ever justified buying something you know you shouldn't have purchased? Getting the fries instead of the salad for an extra dollar because you're hungry and, hey, it's just a buck? Or maybe you bought a way-too-big house because the ARM was so affordable (emphasis on the "was")? Well, you'll have your work cut out for you if you want to spring for the DiMora Natalia SLS 2. The price? A cool two million dollars.Obviously only intended for the insane - wait, I meant insanely wealthy - the Natalia SLS 2 should be out next year and the justifications have begun. Described by My Desert as "the first eco-friendly, hand-built, $2 million production automobile" (let's hope there isnt' a second), celebrities like Willie Nelson and Larry Hagman are ready to tell us just how good this car can be for the environment. Willie's usually a pusher for biodiesel, not ethanol, but he was excited about the flex-fuel capability of the Natalia SLS 2. He didn't say anything about the car itself. We...

2008-03-11 03:29:00
Photo by gailf548. Licensed under Creative Commons license 2.0.Over the weekend, I met a guy at a party who's been a mechanic for the last 15 years. Once we told each other what we do with our workdays, we naturally fell into a conversation about cars and green technology and the like. As part of our chat, he said something that struck me as pretty right-on. We hear a lot from auto company executives and media relations here at AutoblogGreen, and we hear from our share of clean car advocates and drivers fed up with gas prices. But mechanics? We don't hear a lot of their voices. But we should; as the guy told me, whatever the car companies make will one day break, and he's the guy who needs to put those vehicles back on the road. Twenty years ago, auto repair was a skill that you could learn from a book or someone who'd been doing it for a while. Today, though, on top of the basic understanding of how a vehicle works, you need all sorts of diagnostic equipment and computers just ...
Which green car technologies is Chrysler working on? Yes
2008-02-13 09:35:00
Carlists's Lou Ann Hammond was recently part of what seems like a roundtable interview with Jim Press, the chairman and vice president of Chrysler. A four-minute video clip of that interview is now available over on Carlist and shows Press answering questions about the fate of the Two-Mode hybrid system that was once developed General Motors, DaimlerChrysler and BMW. Since the Daimler-Chrysler split, Chrysler has stepped in as partner while Daimler has gone on to focus on diesels. Hammon asks Press about which of the green technologies - diesel, flex-fuel, hybrid, hydrogen fuel cell or pure eletric - Chrysler is focusing on. Press' answer: that's where we're putting our attention. "If you just bet on one, you may be disappointed," he said. My favorite minor slip-up: Press says Chrysler has "bluetooth" bin 5 diesels (he meant Bluetec). Watch the video here.[Source: Carlist]

The Green Car Revolution Will Start In Israel
2007-12-17 09:34:00
The Israeli government has decided practically to adopt an electrical car project called the "Better Place Project " by Mr. Shai Agassi & Mr. Idan Offer. The project itself was publicly announced about 2 months ago at a well covered press conference in New York. On it’s basic terms, the project offers almost an Utopian vision of a world in which customers will be able to purchase electrical cars, from any car manufacturer, at relatively low prices (without batteries). New companies will be created only for this purpose, and will provide the necessary maintenance and service – e.g. batteries charging stations and batteries replacement spots etc. In addition, thousands of charging stations will be deployed on a large scale almost everywhere at supermarkets, shopping malls parking lots, private residences, etc. One may compare the project to the ubiquitous cellular phone services which enable every customer to buy any cell phone of any brand and use any cellu...
Paris Hilton buying a green car
2007-12-13 21:06:00
But does this means she will give up at her fancy McLaren SLR? It will be interesting to see her driving a Toyota Prius or any other hybrid car - that as much as they want - can’t be as sporty as the SLR. Only if she will wait for the next Lexus LF-A to come! But the hybrid car is not the only way she is trying to save the planet: "Little things that people can do every day to make a huge difference." Hilton said she turns off the lights, doesn’t leave the TV on or the water running when she leaves her house. I would call that saving own money, but maybe indeed she is thinking about saving planet, as money are not a problem for her.At the end of the interview she couldn’t help it saying that he is single and looking for Mister perfection: "Right now I’m single but I am looking for a nice boy," she said. "He should be funny, smart and loyal." Like her!
The 2008 "Green Car" Awards

I don't consider myself a tree hugger, but I do despair sometimes! I've just seen what vehicle has won the 2008 green car award in the US! 20mph is considered green in the US? Really? The EU version is the Honda Civic Hybrid, which can go over 60 miles on a gallon. Is something getting lost in tran
Hyundai i30 diesel wins Green Car award in Australia
2007-11-24 03:49:00
Hyundai doesn't offer any diesel-powered cars in the US yet (a diesel V-6 is apparently coming to the Veracruz in a couple of years) but many of their overseas models use compression ignition. Also not available to American drivers is the new Hyundai i30 hatchback. That's a shame because automotive journalists down under have just named the i30 CRDi as both their Green Car of the year and overall Car of the Year. The diesel i30 won the Greenfleet category of the recent World Solar Challenge with an average of 73.5mpg. The official Australian rating is 50 mpg and 125 g/km of CO2 which is still pretty impressive for a Focus sized car. Hey Hyundai! What about us?! Hyundai beat out such well regarded cars as the VW Golf TSI, the Mercedes C280 and Ford Mondeo. [Source: Daily Telegraph, thanks to Frumpy for the tip]
The 2008 Green Car of the Year goes to the 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid

Green Car of the Year...huh?
2007-11-17 00:16:00
At the Los Angeles Auto Show a hybrid SUV was awarded Green Car of the Year. Is this a joke? No. A SUV is a SUV no matter what. They are dangerous, intimidating and disturbing monsters that take up a lot of space in already congested city streets. They require excessive amounts of resources for production and the technology in these hybrids SUVs would be better off in smaller and lighter vehicles. They should not run in city streets, it is as simple as that. If we could live without them before whenever they started coming we sure can live without them today.
LA Auto Show: Chevy Tahoe Hybrid named 2008 Green Car of the Year

At a press conference this morning here at the LA Auto Show the 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid was named as the Green Car Journal?s 2008 Green Car of the Year. The 2008 Tahoe is the first vehicle from General Motors that uses the new (and expensive) two-mode transmission hybrid system. The Tahoe receiving this award may ...
Sweden's Green Car Explosion
2007-11-12 06:23:00
At this week's Clean Vehicles and Fuels conference in Stockholm, city officials released an updated survey showing that 50 percent of city residents would consider shopping for a "miljöbil" when they buy their next car. That's a huge increase from 2004, the last time the survey was done, when just 20 percent of respondents said they'd consider buying a green, or environmentally friendlier car. One reason for the mental shift has to be Stockholm's congestion tax, newly implemented this year after a 2006 trial. Registered green cars are exempt from the automated tax, and thus are becoming highly sought after - a total of more than 25,000 have been sold since May, to both consumers and for fleets. A big percentage of those green cars are 'bi-fuel' models that run on either regular gas or the E85 ethanol blend. Sales of ethanol bi-fuels in Sweden more than doubled from 21,000 by the end of 2005 to 46,000 by the end o...

UK survey says screw hybrids if you want a green car
2007-09-27 16:18:00
How many top ten lists of green cars to you know of that don't include the Toyota Prius? A new survey by Cardiff University and UK automotive consultancy Clifford Thames has come to the conclusion that the poster car for the environmental driver is actually only the 12th greenest vehicle. Number one? The discontinued Smart Roadster. And the Smart Fortwo Cabriolet comes in second. Or, as Car magazine put it: "A new report today exposes the real green cars - and there's not a hybrid in sight in the top 10." The Financial Times has also written about this story, but it's behind a subscription wall. So, what is this list and how did it come into being? Vehicles were given points depending on emissions/pollutants (half the total) and the "vehicles' construction, energy costs, recyclability and size," according to Car. I'll guess that that construction factor is the key in the Prius faring so poorly, compared to expectations. Let's hope this doesn't revive that CNW Prius vs. Hummer...
Got a guess for the 2008 Green Car of the Year yet?
2007-09-19 21:08:00
We're still catching our breath from the Frankfurt Motor Show and the LA Auto Show is still two months away, but that isn't stopping the LA show promotion team from getting our minds ready for the 2008 Green Car of the Year announcement that is coming November 15. Last year's winner was the Toyota Camry Hybrid and the 2006 Mercury Mariner Hybrid won the award in its inaugural year. So, we've got some time to chat between now an November 15, let's do so. What cars do you think have a shot at winning this year's award? 'Course, if you are of the opinion that COTY awards are a bunch of hooey and we needn't waste our time with them, go ahead and share that feeling, too. We'll take it under advisement. What cars are up for the award? Any production models that will be on sale by the first day of 2008. The jury pool this year includes Carl Pope, executive director of the Sierra Club; Christopher Flavin, president of Worldwatch Institute; Jean-Michel Cousteau, president of Ocean Fu...

By Ann Coulter Americans — at least really stupid Americans like George Bush — believe the natural state of the world is to have individual self-determination, human rights, the rule of law and a robust democratic economy. London's Trafalgar Square Gets A Living Green Carpet
2007-05-25 05:21:00
Trafalgar Square in London is not known for its green credentials. For those of us that have walked its open expanse, there's very little organic material beyond the gum stuck to your shoe to tred on. Being a large intersection of foot traffic, it's naturally a stone and concrete affair. Starting today and continuing until tomorrow, however, Trafalgar Square is getting a green makeover. Over 2,000 square meters of living turf will be placed in the square transforming the icon into London's "Village Green". For two days, people are encouraged to take advantage of the living space with picnics and other recreational activities. The turf itself comes from a company outside of York called Lindum that specializes in sustainable grass growing practices. The turf is harvested as a vegetative mat of roots and leafy plant with very little soil attached. One of the main fertilisers is an organic material made from recycled waste from Yorkshire Water. After its use on th...

Lime-green car points men in blue to suspects

A carjacked 2006 lime-green Dodge Charger proved too hard to hide - and pretty hard to steal - for two Tampa men, police say. Acting on a tip Friday night, Tampa police searched the area of 34th and Chelsea for the vehicle that had been carjacked in Ybor City about 3 a.m. Police spotted the car behind a fence at 4310 N 36th St., where men had been stripping it for parts, police said. Police took four men into custody but so far have charged only three.

Mercedes-Benz E320 BLUETEC Wins World Green Car Honors
2007-04-10 15:20:00
Thanks to the promise that it offers of bringing an efficient diesel sedan back into the North American market, the Mercedes-Benz E320 BLUETEC was awarded the 2007 World Green Car honors last week at the New York International Auto Show. Mercedes is billing the E320 BLUETEC as the "cleanest diesel vehicle in the world." Engineers incorporated a modular design concept which uses a series of components, such as an oxidation catalytic converter and a maintenance-free particulate filter, to "wash" emissions from the engine before anything leaves the tailpipe. Those features, combined with an advanced new approach to reducing nitrogen oxide emissions, make the BLUETEC's emissions cleaner than even a standard gasoline automobile. The BLUETEC also offers a combined 36 mpg (700 miles per tank), all the luxury Mercedes is known for, and a 208 horsepower V-6 engine that goes 0-60 in 6.6 seconds. Not bad. The last diesel vehicle I owned went 0-60 in about 6.6 minutes wh...
