Sen. Barack Obama Gaffe on Greensburg, KS: So What?!!?
2007-05-10 13:10:00 Honestly, I didn't think this was going to be a big deal. I really didn't.During an earlier campaign stop, Sen. Barack Obama took a moment to address the recent tornado that destroyed Greensburg, KS. While speaking of the deadly natural disaster, Sen. Obama stated that over 10,000 people had died.Sen. Obama soon realized his inaccurate statement and restated his words indicating that 10 people had died, not the 10,000 as initially stated. Before the end of yesterday's workday, I received two emails and listened to several co-workers make such a mockery out of Sen. Obama because of his gaffe. They attacked his credability on "citing facts," polarizing Americans by turning a devastating tornado into a political issue and charged his tiredness this early in the campaign as a negative forecaster of his ability to lead the country. Are you kidding me?!!?Sen. Obama did inaccurately provide the death toll number. The fact is, whether 10 or 10,000 died...i...

Greensburg, KS Tornado
2007-05-08 04:30:00 The town of Greensburg, KS is located just over 100 miles west of Wichita on Highway 54. On the night of May 4th, the residents of the town were slammed by a tornado rated as an EF-5. The Enhanced Fujita Scale represents a scale of the strength of tornadoes. The tornado that ravaged Greensburg is the first recorded EF-5 tornado.Officials estimated that over 95% of the town was destroyed with ten deaths recorded so far after the town received winds in excess of 200 mph. The Kansas National Guard was sent in to provide security and now has 40 soldiers and 12 airmen providing security. Unfortunately, four soldiers from Fort Riley were caught looting from a store in the town. Those soldiers have been detained and will be administered their punishment at a later date.Today was the first day the residents of Greensburg were allowed back into the town. Most ...

She fought back tears as she described how her family would enjoy time on the porch having lemonade and popcorn. "This porch is very important to the family," she said. "We're glad it's here but we won't be sitting in it." Traffic leading into Greensburg backed up as police checked drivers' identification. Residents were being allowed to inspect their property until 6 p.m. Monday. "Virtually the entire city has been destroyed, " said Maj. Gen. Tod Bunting of the Kansas National Guard on M...
