Snark of the Day: Abe Greenwald
2009-04-12 03:03:00 It is far too easy to criticize the president for failing to do or say the right thing in regard to these fragile situations. Missteps could prove fatal. But to do and say nothing about Americans being held captive in foreign lands is a scandal in itself and another global advertisement for America’s new and pervasive sense of trepidation Abe Greenwald, Commentary Magazine. 2008-04-20 19:20:00 Great American Hypocrites: Toppling the Big Myths of Republican Politics By Glenn Greenwald Crown Publishers, New York, 2008 Last Sunday I reviewed Glenn Greenwald’s new book, Great American Hypocrites. Glenn wanted to join us then, but travel snafus prevented it, so he’s here today. Here’s a snippet from that review: It’s not about the hypocrisy, it’s about ...
On Glenn Greenwald, Dean Barnett, Hypocrisy & Blogging
2008-04-18 01:39:00 When I received a copy of my friend David Boaz’s latest book, The Politics of Freedom: Taking on the Left, the Right, and Threats to Our Liberties, I was surprised to find a praiseworthy blurb from Glenn Greenwald on the book cover. Up until then, I had only heard of Greenwald when he offered angry, sometimes ...

Nightly Ramble: Blogging, misidentifications and their purposes,Greenwald,
2008-02-18 22:02:00 James Joyner notes the passage of another milestone… 24 million. He’s up to a million hits per month, now. I suppose this to be a good bench test for Wordpress. Congrats from here, James. With the new job, my posting is going to be a little off for a few days, until I find a timing groove. SOme major schedule changes at home because of this, and I’ve just gotta get used to the new schedule. Over the weekend, I made some changes as to how this blog takes feeds from Centcom’s News Release site. We’ll no longer be posting them on the main pages, but rather will be offering them off the new Centcom Press Room page, which in turn is a part of the BitsBlog Newsroom page. Speaking of the Newsroom page, I’ve been working on that, as well. The BitsBlog Newsroom is already big and will get downright huge before I’m done adding stuff to it. I’ve already added the White House feeds and the downright huge Voice of America feeds, feeds from the ...

Glenn Greenwald Explains Everything
2008-01-08 18:16:00 More concisely and with better statistics, I might add...Edwards -- who, just one week ago, was 10 points behind Obama nationally among Democrats -- is now only two points behind him. Less than a month ago, he trailed Clinton by 29 points. Now it's 13 points. He is, by far, at his high point of support nationwide. Apparently, the more exposure Democratic voters get to Edwards and his campaign positions -- and that exposure has been at its high point during his surge -- the more they like him.(Hat tip to Avedon Carol at Eschaton for this)...
Coy about Corn Commodities by Jesse Greenwald
2007-12-03 14:53:00 Corn grown in the USA has traditionally been used to feed livestock or has been converted into corn syrup and used as a sweetener. No longer solely for eating, corn is increasingly being used in the production of ethanol and it is now considered an "energy commodity."The price of corn commodities rallied earlier this year, due to many bullish factors. One of the most significant factors is the fact that the global dependence on energy from fossil fuels is continually being challenged. Geopolitical risks in oil-producing countries, conflicting estimates on the sizes of oil reserves, the environmental movement and the farm lobby in the United States have put biofuels in the spotlight-benefiting the grain commodity markets.Whether you agree with the economics of corn-based ethanol or not, production capacity is being expanded in the United States. Ethanol is heavily promoted by the powerful farm lobby, and is now subsidized by the US Congress. The 2008 re-election campaign figures into...

Salon's Greenwald, Sowell, and Conservative authoritarianism
2007-09-09 01:19:00 I've heard Greenwald interviewed on two radio shows and was impressed with his lack of conspiracy-based nuttiness. In fact, Greenwald's subversion of the hosts' expectations threw the Prager and Hewitt fill-in and fellow blogger Dean Barnett (Soxblog) for a loop, leaving Prager and Barnett speechless. So, it was with some disappointment (I may have to look for another reasonable liberal blogger) that my friends at Magnasquids alerted me to this ridiculous, petty post yesterday. Apparently a man who lives by a Greg Brady-like "exact words" ethos, Greenwald wrapped his intellect around the super-important isssue of Sowell's non-hobgobblinish inconsistency. Greenwald responded to the following Sowell generalization: We all believe that people are innocent until proven guilty. Some on the left believe that they are innocent even after being proven guilty. It either means that liberals don't think that people convicted of crimes are really guilty, the framed by society argume...

Greenwald on Craig and Vitter [Dispatches from the Culture Wars]
2007-09-04 11:02:00 One of the most obvious things about the various scandals involving politicians favored by the religious right over the last few months is the clearly hypocritical manner with which the family values crowd treats those who cheat on their wives with men and who cheats with other women. The entire religious right is demanding that Larry Craig step down, but few demanded that of David Vitter, who admitted to cheating on his wife with prostitutes. There are two obvious reasons for this. First, because they really do think that being gay is the very definition of horrible, while adultery is seen as a minor sin. So much for “family values.” I dare say that far more families are destroyed by heterosexual adultery. Second, because if Craig resigns his replacement will be chosen by a Republican governor; if Vitter resigns, his replacement will be chosen by a Democratic governor. Glenn Greenwald sums it up nicely: Read the rest of this post… | Read the comments on this po...
"Left Luggage" by Jeff Greenwald, Guest Blogger
2007-09-03 16:19:00 [Prince's Note: I knew that acclaimed travel writer Jeff Greenwald wrote great travel essays. His work transports you to other lands with vivid details, a genuine sense of wonder, and lots of humor. But when I recently saw him tell some of his stories during his one-man show, Strange Travel Suggestions, I was struck by how layered his work is and how every new discovery reveals so much about not only the places he visits but also the nature of humankind. The following very amusing and well-crafted true story takes place entirely at an airport in India, but is rich on many levels. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did. Let me know what you think. Much thanks to Jeff for allowing me to share this, and much thanks to you, dear readers, for allowing me to take a blogging break so that I may meet my other deadlines.]Most travelers have learned, usually through direct experience, the truth of semanticist Alford Korzybski's claim: "The map is not the territory." And many of us have lear...

Jeff Greenwald Is Just Asking to Be Identity Thieved
2007-08-21 17:28:00 When travel writer Jeff Greenwald came to see me in JUKEBOX STORIES last year in Berkeley, he felt such a connection to my performance that he wanted me to keep in touch. Out of business cards, he handed me a deposit slip that he had torn out of his checkbook and added a "dot com" after his name so that I would be able to track him down later. What man in his right mind hands a complete stranger?an inscrutable Asian, no less!?a piece of paper with his bank's routing number and account number on it? Jeff Greenwald is just asking to be identity thieved. If I were some computer hacker genius (instead of just a mere Renaissance genius), I would have depleted his account just to teach him a lesson and spent all that money on art supplies for my Zac Efron collage.Anyway, since my many novelist friends guilt me about not reading their novels (I'm working on it!), I was relieved that Jeff wrote nonfiction. I started reading Scratching the Surface, a book of travel essays, and what I've re...

Glenn Greenwald is a smart liberal
2007-08-18 22:02:00 If any group wants credibility, it needs to be honest in its assessments, especially if the conclusions don't necessarily conform to their ideals. Thus, just like liberals need to admit that the Bush tax cuts increased revenues, conservatives must concede that Clinton's tax increases didn't doom the economy. Besides honesty, liberals and conservatives must not demonize the other side unless the would-be devils truly deserve the appellation. Sometimes people disagree because they have different goals (equality versus economic growth); or begin with distinct premises (unborn babies aren't full humans) not because one side is stupid or crazy. So, just like liberals would be irresponsible to make Pat Buchanan the standard bearer for conservatives, it would be unfair to make Michael Moore the poster boy for our liberal brothers and sisters which I've done to a certain extent with my "trolling the left" category. As penance, I bring you the definitely unzany Glenn Greenwald. In ...

Glenn Greenwald: The Unhinged Mind
2007-05-15 14:47:00 In recent speech on the “Rule of Law”, Fred Thompson discussed unequal treatment under the law. Thompson noted: In our system all citizens are guaranteed equal protection. And when we appropriate unlimited resources and give unlimited power and direct it all toward one individual, there had better be extraordinary circumstances. There were none here. Just a case of public officials without the courage to do the right thing and stop this farce before it began. In no other prosecutor’s office in the country would a case like this one have been brought. Clarice Feldman, the sharp tack, applauds Thompson’s defense of due process: He is not the only one noting that the case against Scooter is related to the failure of will and inability to fight the entrenched bureaucracy by key administration officials who did not/could not stop what they knew was a farcical proceeding. Brian Carney reviews the case and agrees that a pardon now is necessary to undo a great wrong...

Oh, shut up, Greenwald
0000-00-00 00:00:00 Glenn Greenwald... Joe Klein has just posted yet again about his FISA confusion, and it has now moved well beyond farce into an almost pity-inducing realm.
