Injury Insight: Terry Glenn and Greg Jennings
2007-09-09 14:11:00 It looks like Dallas Cowboys WR Terry Glenn will not play this week. He also might be out for a more extended period. Be sure to get someone else in your lineup before game time. Patrick Crayton of the Cowboys is a good option. He won't match Glenn's regular numbers, but Romo will look his way fairly frequently. The fantasy player that benefits most from Glenn's injury is Jason Witten. He's certain to get more looks and becomes Romo's number 2 target. Get him in your lineup.Greg Jennings, Green Bay's number 2 WR, is questionable. With Donald Driver already nicked up, Jennings was expected to have a strong showing against the Eagles. However, now it looks like, if he plays, he won't be able to do that. If you were counting on him as your WR2, the best thing to do is pick up rookie James Jones, who had a great preseason, showing signs of establishing a rapport with Brett Favre. In other injury news, Eagles TE L.J. Smith is also questionable, as is Rams WR Drew Bennett. On the br...

From the Mailroom: Greg Jennings (WMU's finest)
2007-08-25 23:51:00 The mailroom is swelling with letters and emails from football fans across the globe. As the opening kick-off swiftly approaches, the natives are getting restless. And as more and more of you fanatics draft your 2007 teams, the excitement continues to build at a frenetic pace. We'd like to feature an email from Edgar in Salem, Massachusetts this week. Edgar writes:I see that you drafted Greg Jennings onto your fantasy football team. I did, too. How worried should I be that he's performed so poorly this preseason?Well, Edgar, Jennings' preseason numbers are certainly pathetic. And that's putting it nicely. But let's remember one key thing about the preseason...it doesn't count. Therefore, we're not putting much stock into his terrible stats. Who knows? It could be that Brett Favre and the coaches are just trying to get a good look at some of the Pack's other receivers. But it probably isn't because Jennings has fallen out of favor in Green Bay. He and Favre established a soli...

Jennings starts to make an impact
2007-08-22 17:24:00 Maybe the squeaky wheel does get the grease. After complaining about his role in the Green Bay Packers offense, wide receiver Greg Jennings has suddenly gotten some attention."After a quiet start to camp, receiver Greg Jennings had his second straight productive practice," writes Rob Demovsky of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. "On Tuesday, he caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from Brett Favre with Patrick Dendy covering him."Jennings would be happy to know that there's someone else out there who shares his viewpoing.Tom Silverstein points out in today's Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that Pro Bowl wide receiver Donald Driver has recently had a case of the drops throughout the course of this training camp."Driver's drops are another reason the Packers are making a mistake by not keeping Jennings involved in the offense during camp," according to Silverstein. "Driver can't do it all alone and the more the ball is spread around, the less reliance there is on one player making every catch. Je...
Position analysis: Wide receivers
2007-08-21 00:05:00 Our position by position analysis continues today with a look at the wide receivers on the Green Bay Packers roster. This is the fourth in our nine part series in the run up to cutdowns after the third preseason game. And without further adieu ...Donald Driver - The Pro Bowl receiver may just return to the Pro Bowl once again. He's Brett Favre's favorite receiver. Just watch. In Saturday's preseason game, the Favre's first couple passes went in the direction of Driver. Unfortunately, opposing defenses also know that. A majority of those passes went incomplete. It wasn't until Favre found Bubba Franks and James Jones that the offense really started getting revved up.Greg Jennings - So Greg Jennings is upset with his role in the offense? He shouldn't be. Driver isn't a spring chicken anymore, and someone will start to get those receptions that Driver used to get. Obviously if you're the No. 2 receiver you're not going to get as many receptions as the No. 1. But as long as Jen...
Don't expect Jones to start
2007-08-20 15:40:00 There's probably plenty of fans clamoring for the Green Bay Packers to start rookie wide receiver James Jones based upon his preseason play.Don't count on it says Rob Demovsky of the Green Bay Press-Gazette."As good as James Jones has been as a rookie receiver for the Green Bay Packers, there's probably little chance coach Mike McCarthy will throw him into the starting lineup anytime soon," according to Demovsky.Head coach Mike McCarthy likes what Jones has done so far, but he's not about to take Greg Jennings out of the starting role."I'm not disappointed in his play," McCarthy said of Jennings. "It's more about opportunities. I'm not calling plays to get the ball to certain people. You're looking at different combinations. Greg should not be disappointed about his opportunities. I'm sure he is. He's a true competitor. Greg Jennings will get the football."It would be interesting to know if Jennings is any more or less frustrated with his role in the offense after Saturday...
Preseason game two impressions
2007-08-19 16:09:00 Everyone was concerned about how the first string offense was going to fare after the disappointing performance against Pittsburgh. That Steelers game is now a distant memory after Brett Favre led the offense to an inspiring display versus the Seahawks. The passing game and the running game were clicking, and they didn't have a turnover. It was an A- performance if not a solid A.Could Atari Bigby be the next starting strong safety for the Packers? His two sacks and forced fumble along with a quarterback hurry were the most impressive. But maybe even better was that he didn't give up any long pass plays like he did against Pittsburgh one week earlier. The sack attack continued in much the same way it did against Pittsburgh. A.J. Hawk's manhandling of the fullback picking up the blitz was inspiring. Not to be outdone were Cullen Jenkins, Abdul Hodge, Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila, Larry Birdine who also had sacks.Bubba Franks may have played the game of his life. It's too bad it had to come...
Jennings unhappy at X
2007-08-18 15:53:00 Green Bay Packers wide receiver Greg Jennings is unhappy at the X receiver position on the team. The X receiver sometimes gets the short end of the stick. For example, if the X is on the weak side, there may be another wide receiver, a slot receiver and a tight end all on the strong side. The quarterback is going to read the strong side first where he has three options to throw.Robert Ferguson is a classic example of a receiver who played several seasons at the X position. As Packer fans intimately know, Ferguson had little more than a minor impact on the offense."I told him, 'I see how you didn't progress (as a receiver) at the X position,' " Jennings is quoted as saying in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "It's tough. If you don't have a slot receiver on your inside, you're last in the progression 90% of the time. There's a tight end, slot and flanker on the other side. You have three different options over there and just one back here."In Jennings's defense, he was not acti...
Woodson looks sharp in return to the field
2007-08-13 23:41:00 It's hard to believe Charles Woodson was even injured. According to reports, he was shining on the practice field during Monday's training camp practice after sitting out Saturday's preseason game."On one of the first plays during a drill, Woodson leaped over wide receiver Donald Driver to intercept a Brett Favre pass," according to PackersNews.com.Woodson was back lining up with the first string punt returns, and that's not all."Woodson also nearly had another interception against Favre when he knocked a pass down intended for Greg Jennings," reports PackersNews.com. "As if Woodson didn't do enough already, he was seen on the sidelines doing push-ups with his fists touching the ground."It's likely that the Packers were simply taking precautionary measures with one of their star players on Saturday. He probably would have played if it had been a regular season game.Welcome to the Railbird feed. Eat up.
Jones turns heads
2007-08-10 19:04:00 The buzz surrounding Green Bay Packers rookie wide receiver James Jones has quelled over the past couple of days. It was really high last week and immediately after this past Saturday's scrimmage. But now that the word is out, most people have gone onto analyzing different aspects of the Packers. In most people minds Jones has already won the team's No. 3 wide receiver job.Jones recently got some attention on the NFL's official website. Writer Adam Schefter has listed Jones as one of his "rookies to watch in the preseason.Schefter writes, "Last year, the Packers nabbed Greg Jennings out of Western Michigan in the second round; this year, they got Jones out of San Jose State in the third. Those two receivers have the chance to be the type of players that quarterback Brett Favre wishes he could have thrown to throughout his career. The Packers believe Jones has made more early-in-camp catches than Robert Brooks or Antonio Freemen did. He has made acrobatic long catches and demonstr...
Clifton and Jennings will play
2007-08-10 18:17:00 There's less reason for Green Bay Packer fans to worry. Two major contributors to the offense have been cleared to play in the team's first preseason game on Saturday against the Pittsburgh Steelers."Jennings (hip) and tackle Chad Clifton (knee) are both expected to play," reports Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.Neither of their injuries had been considered serious, but it's still good to see them playing and getting prepared for the regular season. Hopefully they'll be able to help the first string put a touchdown up on the board before they sit the rest of the game out.Welcome to the Railbird feed. Eat up.
Jennings ready to take NFL by storm
2007-08-02 15:08:00 It's amazing the impact Greg Jennings had on the Green Bay Packers last year despite being an inexperienced rookie and being injured. It's amazing how limited Jennings was after his ankle injury last season. Most players would have been sitting on the sidelines so it is a testament to Jennings's tenacity that he was even able to play.Just imagine what a healthy Jennings would be capable of ...So is Jennings fully recovered? Or will he still be a step slow and not able to get off the line of scrimmage?"By all accounts, Jennings is healthy, recovered from the ankle injury and the hip flexor problem that sidelined him for part of organized team activities in June," reports Tom Pelissero of the Green Bay Press-Gazette.So if Jennings is fully healthy, why hasn't he wowed anyone at training camp yet?"It's not like we're not trying to get (Jennings) the ball, but we're certainly not designing it just for him to get the ball," offensive coordinator Joe Philbin told the Press-Gazette. ...
One step forward and two steps back?
2007-08-01 17:52:00 It's really hard to get a gauge on Green Bay Packers cornerback Will Blackmon (pictured during his playing days at Boston College). His athletic ability is praised and lauded, but when will potential turn into on-field production? On the plus side, Rob Demovsky of the Green Bay Press-Gazette says that Blackmon "likely has the greatest potential. (Packers secondary coach Kurt) Schottenheimer called Blackmon 'as gifted as anybody we play back there.'"A source at Packer Udate had to say, "The only player that really excites me as a returner is Blackmon. His explosiveness reminds me of [ex-Packer] Allen Rossum, but he needs to show enough at corner to justify being part of the 45-man active roster on game day.?But for every bit of good that's said of Blackmon, it seems like there's more bad. Blackmon is currently working with the third string defense behind obvious starters Al Harris and Charles Woodson but also behind Patrick Dendy and Jarrett Bush as well.Reporting on Tuesday's p...
Martin finally catches on
2007-08-01 16:46:00 The Green Bay Press-Gazette listed wide receiver Ruvell Martin in their thumbs up section in Wednesday's edition.Last year's no. 3 wideout is one of the few receivers with real size to him, and Tuesday he had a really good practice."During the morning session, he ran a fade pattern on fourth-and-goal from the 5-yard line and caught a touchdown in the left corner of the end zone over cornerback Will Blackmon," writes Rob Demovsky of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. "He then caught a deep ball on a sideline route over cornerback Patrick Dendy during a blitz period in the night practice."It comes at a perfect time for Martin who might be falling behind Donald Driver, Greg Jennings and James Jones in the top three rotation. Even Carlyle Holiday, Robert Ferguson and David Clowney will provide stiff competition for the fourth spot."Perhaps it signaled a turnaround for Martin, who according to unofficial training camp statistics compiled by the Press-Gazette, had not made a catch during a te...
Jones impresses
2007-07-30 15:38:00 Green Bay Packers rookie wide receiver James Jones is making a case that he deserves to be the team's third receiver when the regular season hits."With No. 1 receiver Donald Driver out due to a shoulder injury, Jones got plenty of opportunities with the No. 1 offense," writes Rob Demovsky of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. "To say he took advantage would be an understatement. In the night practice alone, Jones caught at least six passes during team (11-on-11) periods while lined up with the starters."Demovsky hasn't been the only one who has noticed."During back-to-back drills -- the first a team drill and the second a blitz drill -- rookie receiver James Jones caught four passes, including beating nickelback Patrick Dendy on a deep in-route," reports Pete Dougherty of the Press-Gazette.This sounds an awful lot like what Greg Jennings was doing a year ago - a rookie who was turning heads and playing with a maturity ahead of his time.Perhaps the Packers have another Jennings or Marque...
Blackmon finally makes an impression
2007-07-30 14:56:00 Good news for Green Bay Packers cornerback Will Blackmon who lately seems to be getting negative press all the time."Will Blackmon made a spectacular interception of an Aaron Rodgers pass when he stole the ball out of receiver Greg Jennnigs' hands. It was the second interception of the night for Rodgers, who was also picked off by cornerback Jarrett Bush," reports Mike Vandermause of the Green Bay Press-Gazette.For the sake of both Packers fans and for Blackmon, himself, keep it up.
Butter fingers
2007-07-28 23:55:00 We'll be easy on Greg Jennings. It was the first practice of the year, after all."Jennings fumbled an end-around handoff from Brett Favre during team drills," reports Mike Vandermause of the Green Bay Press-Gazette.Don't let it happen again, Greg.
A look at the receivers
2007-07-21 17:56:00 After Fox Sports recently took a critical look at the Green Bay Packers receiving corps, it was time the local media did the same.Today's editions of the Green Bay Press-Gazette and the Wisconsin State Journal both take a look at the state of the Packers' wideouts.Pete Dougherty of the Green Bay Press-Gazette writes, "Some of the fate of the Packers' passing game rides on whether (Greg) Jennings can become a productive and occasionally dangerous player." Meanwhile, Jason Wilde of the Wisconsin State Journal states, "The darkhorse is veteran Robert Ferguson, who missed all but four games last season because of a Lisfranc foot injury and could be nearing the end of the line in Green Bay. But if Ferguson can recapture the form he showed late in the 2003 season, he could be the additional playmaker the offense is searching for."Click the links to take a further look into the state of the Packers' future at wide receiver.
Packers receivers get little praise
2007-07-20 17:55:00 Bill Barnwell of Football Outsiders recently ranked the Green Bay Packers receiving corps as the 28th best unit in the entire NFL in an article for Fox Sports.According to Barnwell, "In 2005, Donald Driver was a legitimate No. 1 receiver, fifth in the league with 30.7 DPAR, and losing significant chunks of yardage from his totals because of pass interference penalties he drew. In 2006, he retreated to 37th with 12.7 DPAR. If he's not the player he was in 2005, the Packers are in trouble; while Greg Jennings emerged as a starter, he was abysmal. His -6.8 DPAR was good for 80th in the league, while Bubba Franks' -6.5 DPAR had him dead last amongst all tight ends. Robert Ferguson's staying healthy would help a little bit, and Ruvell Martin had a nice year in limited time, but there are still way too many holes to be filled here."In interesting mode of evaluation is being used to rate the receiver, what Barnwell calls DPAR.Barnwell describes DPAR or Defense-adjusted Points Above Repl...
Jennings raises funds in Michigan
2007-07-02 16:34:00 Green Bay Packers wide receiver Greg Jennings was in Ann Arbor, Michigan on Friday as part of a high school football fundraiser for a local prep team."The event, which drew around 100 people for an evening of bowling, auctions and socializing," reports Nathan Fenno of the Ann Arbor News.Jennings joined Denver Broncos linebacker Ian Gold at the benefit.
Fantasy forecast
2007-07-02 16:28:00 People are starting to look forward to their fantasy football drafts seeing as training camp is right around the corner.Fox Sports is ahead of the curve and recently gave their fantasy football prediction regarding the 2007 Green Bay Packers.Analyst Garrit Ritt gives a particularly scathing review of the Packers offseason saying, "There wasn't a team in football more dedicated to standing pat than the Packers were this off-season. Problem is, nobody seems to understand why. This isn't a great football team, yet the front office made virtually no moves at all in an attempt to get better."Ritt tabbed Packers tight end Donald Lee as the team's surprise player of 2007 and lists the Packers best fantasy players in order as:Donald DriverBrett FavreGreg JenningsVernand Morency
Greg Jennings
2007-06-09 17:09:00 I've been trying to decipher exactly how Brett Favre put together a decent fantasy season last year. I still haven't figured it out; I'll post something if I ever do. But one thing I did notice was how WR Greg Jennings was quickly forgotten. Jennings, a rookie out of Western Michigan, started 2006 on fire pulling in 20 catches for 364 yards and 3 touchdowns in the first five games. Fantastic! But then he injured his ankle in Week 7 and sat out the next game. When he returned, he clearly wasn't the same receiver - as fantasy players who held on to him quickly realized. Jennings only had 254 receiving yards the rest of the season. Now Jennings is back and is established as the #2 WR opposite Donald Driver. Driver usually draws the top cover guy each week, leaving Jennings to deal with a weaker defender. Assuming they have enough car batteries in the Lambeau Field parking lot to reanimate Brett Favre every week, there should be plent...

Compiling an injury list
2007-06-08 13:39:00 Rookie running back and second round draft pick Brandon Jackson heads the list of notable players suffering from injuries at Thursday's OTA practice for the Green Bay Packers."Coach Mike McCarthy said he's hoping Jackson will be back on the field next week," reports Pete Dougherty of the Green Bay Press-Gazette.Starting wide receiver Greg Jennings was also injured and did not participate in practice."Jennings rode a stationary bike for most of practice and did have anything visibly wrong with him," says the Press-Gazette's Tom Pelissero. After being injured most all of last season, cornerback Will Blackmon didn't practice with the team either.Head coach Mike McCarthy said of him, "It's not serious. It's kind of been bothering him all week. I don't recall (what the injury is). He fatigued it on Tuesday and it started bothering him again today."Starting left tackle Chad Clifton suffered an elbow injury at Thursday's practice, but it did not appear to be serious. The other player...
Team announces MVPs
2007-06-01 13:34:00 The Green Bay Packers announced team honors yesterday, which will be celebrated at the team's Hall of Fame induction ceremony on July 21.According to the Green Bay Press-Gazette:Wide receiver Donald Driver and defensive end Aaron Kampman will share the most valuable player award. Tackle Daryn Colledge and wide receiver Greg Jennings will share the award as offensive rookie of the year. Linebacker A.J. Hawk will be honored as defensive rookie of the year. |
