Tuesday's Question: Who Did You Want To Be When You Grew Up?
2008-05-06 19:28:00 Who Did You Want To Be When You Grew Up?A teacher once told me that curiosity is the basis of intelligence and I believed her then and now. Because when we ask a question we are searching for the truth about each other, our surroundings, and ourselves and thats clever. However, keep in mind that I was an inquisitive little girl who was constantly asking questions. For example, I asked my teacher one time, “How come the Indians taught us how to grow corn after we took their land away from them?”After which a boy in our class remarked, “Why do you let Ann ask so many dumb questions?”Then the children in the classroom began to snicker and softly mutter, “Yeah” to their friends, at which point I wished I were a fly floating around in a stew or squished against the wall somewhere.Hence, my teacher would say, “curiosity is the basis of intelligence” in my defense for the unkind remark, uttered by the same boy my friends and I never added to our “cute boys” list. And look...

Singapore Manufacturing grew 11.7% in January, EDB review shows
2008-03-12 04:24:00 Singapore Manufacturing grew 11.7% in January, EDB review shows  ‘Computational error’ leads to big changes in data on factory output By Nicholas Fang REVERSAL: Revised EDB data shows that electronics actually expanded by 8.7 per cent, instead of contracting by 6.7 per cent in January.  A RARE but sizeable error by the Economic Development Board (EDB) means factory output actually surged by 11.7 per cent in January - not 6.9 per cent as reported earlier. The EDB yesterday cited a ‘computational error’ in the manufacturing growth data it originally released last month. It said it had strengthened its processes to avoid such errors in the future. The rosier revised figures, though, failed to inspire economists to upgrade their yearly forecasts, as the global outlook remained uncertain. The most significant error in the EDB figures involved electronics output, which actually expanded 8.7 per cent. The initial report said the sector contracted 6.7 per cent....

Indonesia's Economy Probably Grew at Almost Fastest in 10 Years
2008-02-14 00:58:00 Indonesia's economy, the biggest in Southeast Asia, probably grew near the fastest pace in 10 years as rising prices of coal, palm oil and cocoa boosted exports, spurring consumer spending. The $364 billion economy expanded 6.4 percent in the three months ended Dec. 31 from a year earlier, after growing 6.5 percent in the third quarter, according to the median forecast of 16 economists surveyed by Bloomberg News. The Central Statistics Bureau will release the data tomorrow. Indonesia is one of only three economies in Asia where growth is expected to accelerate this year, according to HSBC Holdings Plc. Record coal prices are boosting profit at mining companies while surging demand for cocoa and cooking oil is encouraging farmers to spend on motorbikes and mobile phones. ``The key driver for the economic growth is expected to come from domestic demand,'' said Destry Damayanti, chief economist at PT Mandiri Sekuritas in...

Eli Manning Orders Fiancée Abby McGrew to Watch Game in Cold
2008-01-20 22:44:00 Eli Manning, true to the pompous reputation he earned at Ole Miss, has ordered his fiancĂ©e Abby McGrew, to watch him play Sunday night’s NFC Championship football game at Lambeau Field in the sub-zero temperatures, instead of up in the luxury box. Eli seems to think he plays bad when Abby sits in the suite. The Tennessee native is playing along and has agreed to wrap up tight to watch her college sweetheart attempt to beat the Packers. The Giant quarterback has told his college sweetheart and fiancĂ©e, Abby McGrew, to get layered up for tonight’s bitter-cold playoff game in Green Bay - because she has to brave the elements and suffer through the action from stadium seats if he’s going to win. Eli believes he’s jinxed when McGrew watches his games from the cozy warmth of a stadium suite, Manning’s oldest brother, Cooper, told The Post. Abby is Eli’s college sweetheart from their days at Ole Miss. Eli also ordered older brother Peyton Manning to...

CPI grew sharply more than market expected.
2007-12-10 20:35:00 Consumer price index in Czech Republic increased by 5% in November. Market expected 4,5%. Mainly lifted by food inflation. For beginning of 2008 expectations are bit higher now (CPI 6%). Recently Czech National Bank - CNB- increased main interest rate benchmark to 3,5%. With last released CPI data we are again out of inflation targets followed by CNB. Inflation target is 3% with range +/- 1%. On the other side Czech currency Koruna is at strongest level against EUR, USD and therefore any other interest rate hike could hit dramatically Czech export. http://stockweb.blogspot.com/at-om.xml

Tree man ‘who grew roots’ may be cured
2007-11-20 16:45:00 home village south of the capital Jakarta claims to have identified his condition, and proposed a treatment that could transform his life. After testing samples of the lesions and Dede’s blood, Dr Anthony Gaspari of the University of Maryland concluded that his affliction is caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), a fairly common infection that usually causes small warts to develop on sufferers. Dede’s problem is that he has a rare genetic fault that impedes his immune system, meaning his body is unable to contain the warts. The virus was therefore able to “hijack the cellular machinery of his skin cells”, ordering them to produce massive amounts of the substance that caused the tree-like growths known as “cutaneous horns” on his hands and feet. Dede’s counts of a key type of white blood cell are so low that Dr Gaspari initially suspected he may have the Aids virus. But tests showed he did not, and it became clear that Dede’s immune condition was something far ra...
