Grid computing projects
2008-06-04 12:11:00 You've heard of SETI@HOME I'm sure. In one sense it has been a resounding success, on the other it has been a abject failure. It has been the most successful grid computing effort on record so far and yet it has essentially stuck a fork in the chance of there being technologically advanced aliens. People are now forced to hypothesize that a more advanced civilization will no longer use radio to communicate. This seems somewhat far fetched to me because of the simplicity of using radio waves for said communication. Current Grid Computing Projects Anyways, here is a list [Grid Computing Projects] of other grid computing efforts you can participate in. Currently this one might provide the most value: Malaria Control Project. Which illustrates the problem of what do you do with all the data that you generate? [update] If climate change floats your boat (it does NOT float mine) there is a distributed computing project for that: [linky] Future Grid Comp...

Welcome to the future - Grid Computing
2008-04-23 04:34:00 Grid computing provides a way of sharing computer resources such as processing and storage capacity for solving massive computational problems. The resources may include a dedicated cluster in an organization's computer room, an unmanaged cluster of workstations in the next building, or potentially a home PC on the other side of the world.Grid computing is the next evolution of enterprise technology architectures, and will furthermore revolutionize how businesses think about and manage their computing resources. More so than client/server or Internet computing, the technology will be more of a revolution in computing architectures and could spark a revival of the entire technology industry.Perhaps a more accurate way to look at grid computing is to visualise all the systems in an enterprise working together to create a powerful virtual mainframe, giving an organisation unprecedented access and control over computing and data resources, not only within the network but also across th...
Grid Computing and its Advantages
2008-03-19 05:02:00 OuterVillage.com | Technology News & Ideas – Grid computing has been around for a few years now and its advantages are many. Grid computing can be defined in many ways but for these discussions lets simply call it a way to execute compute jobs (e.g. perl scripts, database queries, etc.) across a distributed set of resources instead of one central resource ... read more

Globus command tips
2007-12-12 10:17:00 Before getting into this post on Globus command tips, have some look @ my earlier posts Globus’s FAQ’s Globus certificate Informations. 1. How to check globus authentication ? [santy@squid ~]$ globusrun -a -r squid GRAM Authentication test successful where ‘squid‘ is the hostname of the machine, you like to run the job. 2. How to submit job to default job-manager using ...
Using openssl & globus commands to retrieve certificate informations
2007-12-12 08:28:00 Following to my post on Globus FAQ, I like to give some tips on how to extract useful informations from globus certificates using openssl & globus command line tools. Using Openssl : 1. How to extract serial no of my certificate ? [santy@squid ~]$ openssl x509 -in .globus/usercert.pem -noout -serial serial=C5 2. How ...
Globus FAQ (Frequently asked question)
2007-12-09 15:07:00 1. Error installing GTP bundle : $build-gpt Error: the following command failed : make 2 >&1 Solutions: Unset the environment variable LANG & re-run the GTP build. Linux by default sets the LANG variable to en_US.UTF-8.Due to this some perl modules creates bad Makefile, so unset the LANG variable and rebuild the gpt. e.g. $unset LANG 2. Error while loading ...

Web Service - basics
2007-11-26 14:33:00 I am posting some basics of web services, What is Web Service? Definitions: Web Services are services that are made available through Web Server or Application Server to Web Users or Web Connected programs. The Web Services can be used by other applications also. They are self-contained, self-describing, modular applications that can be published, located, and invoked across the Web. ...
SOAP-Simple Object Access Protocol Tutorial
2007-11-26 14:25:00 SOAP-Simple Object Access Protocol SOAP is an communication protocol between applications, used to send and recive the XML based messages via internet. SOAP is platform independent and language independent. Why SOAP? No security problem No Firewalls, proxy problem It uses HTTP so no interoperability problem Communicates between applications running on different operating systems Communicates between applications developed using different programming ...
Creating java standalone web service client
2007-11-19 18:16:00 In my last article on “Writing java application on Sun Java Application server” we have discussed about Java web service creation using Sun Java Application Server in the Netbeans IDE. Now we are going to discuss about accessing those web services and it s methods from Java standalone client. Related Books Steps to create Standalone Java ...
SOA and Web Services - Introduction
2007-11-13 13:43:00 SOA stands for Service Oriented Architecture. SOA is rather a design philosophy similar to the Object Oriented design paradigm. This architecture is essentially a collection of ’services’. The Service Provider offers the solution in the form of a ’service’, and the the Service Consumer consumes or makes use of the service offered by the ...
Cancer-busters tap into grid computing
2007-11-08 21:10:00 Canadian researchers have promised to squeeze “decades” of cancer research into just two years by harnessing the power of a global PC grid.. The research team is led by Dr Igor Jurisica at the Ontario Cancer Institute, and scientists at Princess Margaret Hospital and University Health Network. The scientists are the first from Canada to use IBM’s World Community Grid network of PCs and laptops with the power equivalent to one of the globe’s top five fastest supercomputers. The team will use the grid to analyse the results of experiments on proteins using data collected by scientists at the Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute in Buffalo, New York. The researchers estimate that this analysis would take conventional computer systems 162 years to complete. Dr Jurisica anticipates that the analysis could be finished in one to two years, and will provide researchers with a better way to study how proteins function, which could lead to the development of mo...

Lessons In Grid Computing The System Is A Mirror
2007-08-27 18:49:00 This book is an experiment in discourse. It uses the medium of the story to engage the issues and ideas of business. Unlike other such experiments, such as “The Goal”, this book is profoundly intellectual in the very best sense of the term. And it needs to be, for it is tackling a deep idea, ...
Grid computing and SOA
2007-05-18 20:32:00 For a great description of what grid computing really is, read this. What they say about the connection to SOA, though, requires some clarification. Here’s the quote: There is a lot of talk going on about synergy between Grid Computing and SOA. It is however driven primarily by implementation concerns at this point rather than by any ...
