Off Topic: The Griffey Ball
2008-06-11 02:58:00
Cody Ross' recent comments about Ken Griffey Jr.'s 600th home run ball really irked me.  A Marlins season ticket holder, Joe, caught the ball and hasn't decided what to do yet.  Here's what Ross said: Just give it to the Hall of Fame, get to meet him, get an autograph, whatever.  But people get greedy. They want to make some money.  I guess the whole Internet thing kicked all of this stuff off.  It didn't use to be like this, but it's a different era. People get money hungry now. This is coming from Cody Ross, a man who will have made over a million dollars for three years of baseball.  A guy whose '09 salary alone should be close to a million bucks.  It's ridiculous for Ross to flippantly suggest Joe would be greedy to make money off the ball. The ball might be worth anywhere from $15,000 to $100,000.  For many people, that's a life-changing amount of money.  A down payment on a new house, maybe.  Joe is right to take his t...

A day after hitting No. 600, Ken Griffey Jr. held off pondering where he might finish on the career home run list — or where he could end up playing this season. There has been ample speculation the last-place Cincinnati Reds might try to trade the 38-year-old right fielder once he reached his homer milestone. Read ...

You all may remember Ian’s fascination with Barry Bonds as he approached and passed the all-time home run mark by Hank Aaron. To me it was an incredible achievement but I had a hard time celebrating it because of the person behind it. A week or so ago Boston’s Manny Ramirez hit his 500th career home ...

Griffey will be remembered as the slugger who did it right
2008-06-10 01:49:00
The greatest tribute to Ken Griffey Jr. is that when he is compared to somebody, it isn't even to other players of his own era. It is to the man who was the all-time home run king before Barry Bonds came along. "(Griffey will) be seen as a guy who accomplished things honestly," says Kevin Grace, author, teacher and archivist at the University of Cincinnati, "and will probably be compared to (Hank) Aaron."Is there a higher honor? Griffey will be viewed by history as "a decent guy with incredible talent who achieved what he did through hard work — despite crippling injuries," says Grace. Is there a higher distinction?Griffey's contemporary sluggers in the 600 home run club —Bonds and Sammy Sosa — are tainted because of admitted or suspected steroid use. Only Griffey will be viewed as noble. His legacy will not be in his home run total, but in having done it the right way. Is there a higher place in the pantheon? The highest-profile sluggers of Griffey's era — ...

Crasnick On Griffey And Dunn
2008-06-06 14:18:00
Jerry Crasnick comments today on the Reds new youth movement and what that might mean for Ken Griffey Jr and Adam Dunn. Crasnick notes that it will be difficult to replace Dunn's production, but wonders if he just needs a change of scenery. Dunn does not appear to have any desire to enter negotiations on an extension and still seems to be harboring some bad feelings towards the club...Although Crasnick doesn't specifically speculate, it sounds as if the Reds would be best served trading Dunn. As for Griffey, Crasnick believes that Griffey might be willing to renegotiate his $16.5MM '09 option if the team is willing to add a second year on to the deal. However, Crasnick is not sure the Reds are willing to keep Griffey around until he is 40. Crasnick does speculate that even though the Mariners poor start eliminates the possibility of a trade during the season, the M's may be willing to bring Griffey back in '09 as a free agent to play first base, especially with Richie Sexson'...

The Mets completed a deal for Ken Griffey Jr. in December of 1999 when Omar was an assistant GM under Steve Phillips, everything was complete except for the hall of fame sluggers stamp of approval. In what is usually resolved with cash compensation, Griffey decided to veto the trade and remain with the Seattle. It wasn't that the Mets were a bad team, in fact they were coming off a wild card playoff birth but Griffey stated that he would only accept a trade to his home town Reds or would remain with the Mariners. Griffey chose to stay in a small market, out of the scrutiny of the NY media. The Mets would make it to the World Series in 2000 and you have to believe that with Griffey the over achieving no-names might have had a chance to actually beat the evil empire. As far as the Reds, they have averaged 75 wins per season since then and never made the playoffs.Even after Ken Griffey Jr. vetoed a potential trade that would have brought him to the Mets, at least two players and anoth...

Rosenthal's Latest: Sabathia, Griffey, Dunn

The latest from Ken Rosenthal's Inside Pitch video: The Indians are going to have to at least entertain deals for C.C. Sabathia.  If they continue to fall in the standings, Rosenthal expects the Indians to try for a Dan Haren type deal involving numerous prospects in return.  Two teams he mentions with interest are the Dodgers and Yankees. Ken Griffey Jr. will not be traded until after he hits his 600th home run. Rosenthal also touches on Adam Dunn.  He can block any trade before June 15th.  After that he can block trades to ten unknown teams.  The Reds are still weighing their options - it is possible they sign him to a long-term deal. Odds and Ends: Griffey, Baek, German, Wells
2008-05-22 13:06:00
Here's today's link collection. Hal McCoy seems fairly certain that Ken Griffey Jr. will play out the season with the Reds. Dejan Kovacevic has heard that the Pirates are torn between Pedro Alvarez and Tim Beckham at #2. Cha Seung Baek has been DFA'd, and this time he might be claimed.  He could have a career as a fifth starter somewhere. John Brattain explains why he feels teams are colluding against Barry Bonds. The Rangers DFA'd reliever Franklyn German; Evan Grant explains why. The Indians claimed reliever Oneli Perez from the White Sox.  Baseball America says the six-fingered pitcher has attitude questions. According to Buster Olney, David Wells is still waiting by the phone hoping for a team to call. RotoAuthority examines Daniel Cabrera's hot start.

Odds And Ends: Rusch, Griffey, Myers, Brewers
2008-05-15 18:31:00
A few more notes for your ogling... This morning we told you that Glendon Rusch declined his assignment to AAA and chose to become a free agent. Troy E. Renck says that the Rockies are already expressing interest in the lefty. Brewers owner Mark Attanasio has given Doug Melvin permission to trade for a starting pitcher noting that there is enough flexibility in the payroll to take on another contract. However, Attanasio also indicated that it was too early to explore those possibilities. The Delaware News Journal takes a look at this past offseason's crop of free agent starting pitchers and how they are performing so far in '08. They wonder if any of those arms would have been a better option for the Phillies rotation than moving Brett Myers back from the bullpen. Doug Harris says that the smart move for the Reds is trading Ken Griffey Jr, noting that if they are waiting for him to hit his 600th home run, they could be in for a long wait. Jocketty: Griffey trade not close to happening
2008-05-15 13:21:00
Jay Bruce might be the hottest hitter on the planet. His bat is ready for the big leagues. The only thing preventing a call-up is the Reds don't have a spot for him to play. Trading Ken Griffey Jr. would open a spot. But despite all the speculation, a Griffey trade isn't close to happening according to the Cincinnati Enquirer."I've had no trade discussions," Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said. "I've talked with him. Not knowing Junior that well, I wanted to make sure we had a line of communication open. He assured me that he'd like to play here and hopefully win a championship."Jocketty has talked to Griffey about the situation. As a player with 10 years' experience and five years' tenure with his current club, Griffey must approve any trade. Bruce might force the issue with the way he's playing. He went 3-for-3 with a double, triple and home run for Triple-A Louisville in an 11-6 win over Scranton Wednesday. He's hitting .667 with three home runs and nine RBI ove...
Jocketty: No Talks To Trade Griffey
2008-05-15 11:52:00
In a new twist to the Ken Griffey Jr saga, John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports that Reds may have no interest in trading Griffey. When asked about the subject, GM Walt Jocketty said that he has had no discussions with other teams about trading Griffey and that Griffey does not want to be traded."I've had no trade discussions," Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said. "I've talked with him...Not knowing Junior that well, I wanted to make sure we had a line of communication open. He assured me that he'd like to play here and hopefully win a championship."Griffey is a "10 and 5" player (10 years exp. and 5 years with current club) and would have to approve any trade. This seems to contradict recent reports of the Mariners interest in Griffey. Hal McCoy reported that the M's sent an executive (not a scout) to watch Griffey play last week. And it was later reported that Seattle had no problems with acquiring Griffey's '09 option at $16MM with a $4MM buyout. It is hard to im...

Griffey Rumors From Rosenthal
2008-05-13 10:44:00
Yesterday we ran through various complications the Reds face in trading Ken Griffey Jr.  Today, Ken Rosenthal addresses many of them. Rosenthal says Griffey "would not necessarily require a team to exercise his $16.5MM option for 2009 as a condition of a deal."  On May 5th ESPN's Peter Gammons had written that Griffey was "unlikely to agree to a deal without that option being guaranteed." Rosenthal adds that Junior is open to more teams than he was previously, as being closer to his Orlando home is a less pertinent need than it once was. A big league source of Rosenthal's says Reds GM Walt Jocketty recently asked Griffey if he wanted to be dealt.  Griffey would reportedly prefer to stay but would consider a deal if that's what the Reds want.  Griffey may be able to maintain his Type A status, but would the Reds offer him arbitration?
M?s Watching Griffey [UPDATED]

Mariners Send Exec To Scout Griffey
2008-05-12 11:17:00
According to Hal McCoy of the Dayton Daily News, the Mariners sent consultant to the GM Duane Schafer to Shea Stadium this weekend to watch Ken Griffey Jr.  Junior finds himself with a .254/.333/.384 line in 156 plate appearances.  He's three homers shy of 600. There are plenty of complications with the Griffey-to-Seattle scenario: The Mariners are eight games back, seven out in the Wild Card, and in last place with a .385 winning percentage.  The Reds are doing about the same, making it tough to say the Ms will offer a better chance at a ring. Raul Ibanez would probably have to move to DH to open up an outfield spot for Griffey. Griffey needs a big May to prove he can actually help a team's offense. Griffey would be moving farther away from home to play for the Mariners. It's not known whether Griffey would ask that his $16.5MM option for '09 be exercised upon a trade.  Even with the hefty $4MM buyout and salary deferral, the option would be hard for any tea...
