TCA Live Blog Day 2: CW Prez Dawn Ostroff Gets Grilled
2009-08-04 21:56:00
Like a dead man woman walking, CW President Dawn Ostroff tried her best to delay the inevitable. But alas, at the annual press tour, it’s surprisingly difficult to avoid the firing squad that is the Television Critics Association as they anxiously await their opportunity to unleash a flurry of questions, most of them revolving around the current status of Mischa Barton’s health. So after distracting the audience with shiny beautiful things (namely Elle Macphersen’s sparkly sequined jacket during THE BEAUTIFUL LIFE panel), the smoldering Robert Pattinson-esque looks of new VAMPIRE DIAIRES bad boy Paul Wesley and promo after promo after promo for the network’s slew of new shows that the CW swears — you’ll be like totally blogging, tweeting and im’ing about — it was time. Time for Ostroff to answer for her crimes against humanity (Read: EVERWOOD’s cancellation!) Okay not really (and yes, still bitter!). But here’s what she did have to...

Charley's Steakery grilled subs
2009-02-04 10:37:00
Charley's Steakery sub sandwich. We got this at the local mall. I believe this is the Philly Cheesesteak Sub. They grill the meat in front of you. This was back in June, 2008, so I can't really remember what the taste was, but I think it was fine. I mean, it can't be too bad if it's grilled fresh.$5.40FIND MENU & LOCATIONS:http://www.charleysst-eakery.com/
Grilled Butter Corn on Cob
2008-11-27 00:00:00
I miss the Pasar Malam (a Malay word for Night Market) I used to go to when I was a little girl. The sellers just laid a cloth or canvas sheet on floor and display what they are selling there. Very much like the the flea market at Sungei Road. Then came the Fun Fair with all the rides and game stall. I can't remember what we ate then because I was only interested in the games. But I do remember the drinks were still in glass bottle form and the stools were all made of wood. I love the game where you try to throw and get your ring to land on some coloured pins for prizes. And not forgetting the knock down cans! Sigh! The good fun old days. And yes, I'm that old. ;)The Pasar Malam nowadays are b-o-r-i-n-g. Even my kids doesn't like to go. Well, except when there are rides. We just have a look if we happen to be there. Usually, we will buy some food back. My son's favourite is the "Shark's Fin" soup. No, no shark's fin in there. ;)For me, I got to have the "bird's nest" drink, w...
Pan Grilled Terikayi Shitake Mushroom
2008-11-19 05:06:00
A quick post to let you know I'm still kicking, though barely alive.I had been busy for the past week with the kids' stuff, making and preparing gifts for their teachers and friends before the end of school. Both my kids are going to new schools next year. So it was a farewell kind of thing for them.School holidays has only just started this week and it feels like it has been weeks already. My kids are driving me up the wall. I feel so drained out everyday. Before the holidays, I still had my 2 hours break after I send the kids to school. Now, my break time is when the kids are in bed at night but by then I'll be busy trying to clear my housework. I desperately need to clone myself. Any scientist out there? :POkay, enough of my rants. This idea that I'm sharing is really easy and simple. We use to do this for our BBQ but using commercially bought sauce. Here, I had use the sauce left from making the Teriyaki Chicken for my son's lunch box. I generously basted the Shitake Mushroo...

My Grilled Pizza will soon be my Prize-Winning Grilled Pizza.
2008-10-20 18:48:00
You've wanted to know the secret to my pizza, and I'll give it to you. This recipe will make two pizzas-- at least.First of all, you need the dough. I cheat a little: I use Jiffy Pizza Crust dough; buy two boxes and make it according to the package. Let that sit a little and raise, covered with a towel, while you prepare the rest of the ingredients. The rest of the ingredients are:A can of sliced pineapple.1 pound of pork sausage.1 pound of cheese-- 1/2 pound mozzarella, 1/2 pound pepper jack.Pepperoni.Butter (not a whole lot)Parmesan cheese (just buy the can.)Tomato sauce (you can get whatever kind you like; why homemake it?)1 onion.Cherry tomatoes.Fry up the pork sausage -- put it on medium heat in an iron skillet, if you have one, and sprinkle it with some garlic salt and some pepper while it's frying. Get it good and brown.Drain the juice from the pineapple (I recommend putting it in a glass with some ice cubes and drinking it -- making pizza is hot work.) Slice each r...
Prosciutto and Melon Grilled Cheese Sandwiches
2008-10-05 10:00:00
I have to admit that this little experiment was a bit of a gamble--when Andrew saw what was in his sandwich he was a bit nervous but after sampling it he agreed that it was an interesting and not-unpleasant combination. Me? I'd upgrade that assessment to "delicious" because I love that savory-sweet combination.Prosciutto is just a fancy, thin (expensive) Italian ham and while I normally wouldn't advocate spending a ton of money on super model bacon a little goes a long way and it really gives the sandwiches a delicate texture and flavor.Anyway, we loved it--and it beats those old American singles grilled cheese sandwiches out the door.10 ounces sliced prosciuttohalf a cantaloupe, thinly sliced4 slices havarti cheese8 slices crusty French breadbutterDivide the prosciutto, melon and cheese among the four sandwiches then brush the outside with melted butter. Grill until golden brown--if the cheese isn't melted inside yet you can always zap it for about 20 seconds in the microwave.S...

Grilled Garlic Bread
2008-09-09 07:11:00
This is something I made for Sig's Grill It event, but was too busy to post it on time. Its very simple and tastes heavenly. But, you need to be a garlic lover for that. TH has sandwiches every morning and generally likes to stay from bread of any form over weekends. The one and only exception is garlic bread. We go out for pizza quite often and invariably end up stuffing ourselves because of the generous portions of garlic bread we ordered in the beginning. I like mine with cheese and TH likes it without. This is a grilled version of our good 'ol garlic bread, except that I didn't have baguette in hand, so used normal white bread and that its grilled on a toaster instead of baked. What I Used:Bread - 6 pieces, cut into triangles (Use baguette slices for a more authentic look and taste)Melted butter - 4 tbspMinced garlic - 6 podsSalt (if butter is unsalted) - 1/2 tspChillie flakes and oregano - for seasoningHow I Made It:1. Mix the butter with garlic and salt. 2. Spread this mixt...

Grilled Peaches!
2008-09-04 05:05:00
I recommend everyone make these as soon as humanly possible! I was craving something sweet for dessert tonight and had some peaches so I did a little research and found a reallyyyyy simple recipe for grilled peaches from Real Simple. There's really not much to follow though... you could do this with your eyes closed in about 2.2 minutes. All you need:- 1 ripe peach (I used two since I made my roommate one!)- 1 lime- vanilla ice cream- honey, to drizzleAll you do:- Cut peaches in 1/2 and pit- Place peaches cut side down for about 3 minutes, or until grill marks appear, on a medium heat grill (I use the Grilla Grill pan from Ikea...it's fantastic, one of the best things under $20 I've purchased in a while!)- Flip peaches so they're skin side down, for about 4 minutes or until skin softens- Plate and serve with lime wedge- Scoop ice cream and drizzle honeyTa da! I think I just found my new go-to dessert! :)[Chels]
Grilled Seafood on Lemongrass
2008-08-18 13:37:00
The idea for this dish came from Thai Fishcake. I used to fry it. This time round, I made them in satay style and grilled them. It's more interesting this way and prettier. ;)I think they look really nice with the lemon grass. I'm considering this as one of the dishes I'll make if I have friends over for dinner next time.Ingredients:150g Prawn (after shelled), minced150g Fish Paste or fillet (after skinned and debone), mincedExtra 10 Lemongrass as sticksBlend into paste:1 Fresh Red Chilli, cored (more if you want it hot)3 Shallot1/2 stalk Lemongrass (white part only)2 clove GarlicGinger, size of fingertip1/2 teaspoon Turmeric PowderSeasonings:1/2 teaspoon Salt3/4 tablespoon Sugar1 teaspoon Lime JuiceHow to do it:Mix prawn and fish paste togetherSet aside till ready to use.Blend or pound chilli, shallot, lemongrass, garlic and ginger till paste like.Mix in the Turmeric Powder.Heat 1 tablespoon oil in wok.Fry the paste till fragrant.Add in the seasonings and continue cooking ti...
Grilled Prawns with Garlic and Cheese
2008-07-31 02:58:00
Prawn is my all time favorite and the kids' too. I like it in whichever way it is cooked. I can have it everyday if not for the cholesterol, because I love to suck on the head too! Would it be a waste to throw it away?Anyway, I had to stop myself from finishing the whole lot on my own. I didn't buy a lot of prawns as they were rather expensive due to their size. It will be either difficult to put in the stuffing if the prawn is too small or there won't be much stuffing. If you have friends coming over, serve this. It's fast and easy. I bet they will love it too!Ingredients:8 large Prawns, cleaned2 tablespoon Butter, soften5 tablespoon Grated Parmesan Cheese1/2 tablespoon grated Garlic2 teaspoon Coriander stem, choppedA pinch of saltA dash of pepper (optional - you wouldn't need it if your prawns are fresh)How to do it:Preheat oven to 170C.Mix all ingredients except prawns together and set aside.Trim off the legs, antenna and the sharp thingy (whatever you call that) on the head...
How can I tell if he likes me?
2008-07-20 04:44:00
The signs indicating whether a guy likes you depend on how old you are. If you’re under 10, he likes you if he pretends he doesn’t. No, wait, that also applies to some egotists of any age. Avoid them. The bottom line is that usually, unless you’re still in grade school, you can tell whether a ...

Pan Grilled Bacon rolled Prawns
2008-06-06 13:11:00
Two of my son's favourites are here, prawn and streaky bacon. I used some of the bacon for previous dish and the rest were used here.My son had this with his tomato sauce and I have it with my sweet and spicy sauce. And my daughter just ate the bacon. ^_^"To do this, you will only need large prawns and bacon. Smaller prawns are not advisable to be used here as they will end up being dry and hard.First, you have to shell your prawns. The head and shells can be retained to make Laksa. Then pierce a wooden skewer through the prawn from the tail-end. Oh, and please remember to wet the wooden skewer first. This is to prevent it from burning during the grilling process.Next, wrap a bacon from the tail-end with the fatty part of the bacon 'outside'. Overlap the bacon a little and continue wrapping till the whole prawn is covered. Tuck the loose end of the bacon in. If you have no idea how to do it, just use a toothpick to secure. Likewise, wet the toothpick first before use. You can se...
“Grilled” duck breast

When you’ve just moved and haven’t had the chance to go grocery shopping, those freezer items come in handy. I had been saving a bag of frozen duck breasts for a special occasion ...

Grilled Salmon with Herbs
2008-05-22 08:14:00
If you recall, I mentioned in my earlier post that my hubby wants fish for dinner. This is his latest favourite fish dish. However, accordingly to the seller for dill which is used in this dish, not many people like it as the smell is rather strong. It is rather strong but that's exactly why it's used. I don't eat cooked salmon (I only like it as sashimi) because of the smell when it's cooked but when it's cooked with dill, when I can smell is the aroma of dill. Yeah, I'm not so put off by cooked salmon now.Another plus point for this dish - very easy and fast to cook. Nice for those who are come back home late but still want some hot home cooked dinner. Just blanch or steam some veggies to go with this and dinner is done.I'm using oven to cook this but if you do not have one, you can try steaming it. However, do seal it with foil or cling wrap when you steam it. This is to avoid adding the water vapor from steaming to the fish.Ingredients:100g Salmon1 glove Garlic, chopped fi...
