She needn't have hit us with such a pronouncement: In 16 songs that ring as remarkably, unflinchingly true as those on 2005's landmark The Breakthrough, the queen of hip-hop soul keeps "keeping it real" a specialty. There's no sense in trying to assign credit for the skin-tight grooves and funked-up retro vibe here; with nine producers padding Blige's emotion-rich voice and the lyrics she so obviously lives by, what we're left with is a melange of sounds. Mary J. Blige Has Been Experiencing ?Growing Pains?
2007-12-19 14:59:00 Mary J. Blige recently hit up BET's 106 and Park for a performance of music from her new album, "Growing Pains." And interestingly enough, with an album title that reminds me of one of my favorite 80s sitcoms, it looks like Mary's sporting some retro-looking Mom jeans here. While the jeans are a bit high for my taste, I've learned that it's best not to question Mary and to simply trust her instincts. And the bob she's rocking seems to be catching on at the moment, with Katie Holmes busting it out recently as well. On the album, it's clear that even though Mary resolved almost seven years ago to leave the drama behind, it's managed to catch up with her. The result is a mix of hip-hop and R&B that cautions the listener about the pitfalls of love.
