Six major state-run hospitals and medical colleges associated with them are being given a face-lift by the Gujarat government at a cost of Rs400 million.Health minister Jainarayan Vyas told Khaleej Times that the hospital upgradation had been taken up to meet the norms set by the Medical Council of India, and would be completed by March next.While professors and tutors are being appointed, the students will soon benefit from a new software which will help them connect to other universities and access medical books and journals from across the globe.According to Vyas, the students will be able to refer to case studies of foreign universities and also surf libraries online. Two killed in Gujarat road mishap
2008-04-15 08:41:00 VADODARA: Two persons were killed and 20 others, including eight Pakistani nationals, injured when their bus fell into a river in Gujarat's Mehsana district Monday. The mishap took place when the bus hit the railing of a bridge and fell into Khari river, Mehsana district police said. The bus, belonging to Rajasthan Transport Corporation, was on its way to Ahmedabad from Jodhpur. Police said that that the injured Pakistani nationals were on their way to Ahmedabad to catch a flight to Pakistan and they belonged to Karachi. The injured were admitted to a hospital at Mehsana, police added.(News by punjabnewsline.com)

Mercury dips to new low in Gujarat
2008-02-09 12:47:00 AHMEDABAD: Mercury dipped to a record 0.4 degree Celsius at Nalia in Kutch district as most parts of Gujarat continued to experience the worst cold conditions in more than three decades. Nalia, which has an air base of the Indian Air Force, is always the coolest place in Gujarat but has rarely experienced mercury dipping beyond 4 degree Celsius. The temperature in Bhuj, district headquarters of Kutch; Palanpur, district headquarters of Banaskantha; and Amreli each recorded around 4 degree Celsius. In Jamnagar, it was 6 degree Celsius and in Ahmedabad and Vadodara it was around 7 degree Celsius. The continued cold wave has affected normal life even during day time. In late evenings, people prefer to stay indoors and all roads wear a deserted look much before midnight. The brunt of the hike in gas prices is also being felt by the state?s chemical industry. The hike in the prices of piped natural gas (PNG) and CNG has upset the Rs 3,000- crore ceramic industry of Morbi and many are now switching back to coal. ?Of the 250 units in Morbi, about 125 had turned to gas. However, the recent price hike has made as many as 25 units switch back to coal. Coal is 30 per cent cheaper than the price of PNG,? said GM Pethapara, president, Gujarat Vitrified Tiles Manufacturers Association. The Centre has decreased the subsidised quota of gas for Gujarat and this is believed to have prompted the price hike by companies like Gujarat State Petroleum Company (GSPC) and Adani Energy. 2008-01-25 12:34:00 A two-and-a-half-year-old cub was rescued from a Madhavpura village 's well of Rajkot district of Gujarat. The cub was taken out of the well with help of a rope. The entire operation was completed in one and a half hours. The forest authorities feel that immediate measures are needed to cover the wells and prevent such mishaps in future. “They (nocturnal animals) roam around for long distances in the night for prey. These animals are very likely to fall in the unsafe wells in the village. It is important to make these wells safe by covering them otherwise such incidents will keep taking place," said Jayant Solanki, Assistant Conservator, Dhari Range.
