Gujarat Government Announces Vali Gujarati Awards
2008-04-26 06:04:00 The Gujarat government has selected two Gazal writers Adil Mansuri and Jalan Matri for the Vali Gujarati award in memory of the eminent poet.It is in sharp irony that the award comes at a time when the tomb of Vali Gujarati in the Shahibaug area remains un restored till date. Gujarati?s tomb was demolished by rioters in the post Godhra riots. The incident has triggered widespread protest by litterateurs and leading voluntary organizations from across the state. They have been demanding the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) or the government restore the tomb.In a statement on Friday, State Minister for Youth and Cultural Activities Fakirbhai Vaghela said that Mansuri and Matri have been selected for the award for the year 2008 in recognition to their outstanding contribution in the fields of Gazal writing. Both the poets will be given the award at a public function to be held soon. They would receive a cash award of Rs 1 Lakh. The minister also said that they have set up the Vali...
Batata nu Shaak (Rasedar Aloo ki Sabzi/Potatoes in Tomato Gravy)
2008-04-10 10:31:00 A delicacy in a Gujarati household and in almost every traditional Gujarati function. The potatoes are simmered in spiced tomato gravy. My mother in law adds Kalonji seeds (onion seeds) and I notice that this adds to the flavor of the dish. The potatoes are so well cooked along with the spicy tomato gravy; that this process of cooking allows the little starch from the potatoes to thicken the gravy as well.

Gujarati Kadhi
2008-03-04 06:53:00 Hey Folks! I'm back after a short hiatus. February was supposed to be our home moving month, with the actual move planned for the end of the last week. However we had some rather unexpected warm and sunny weather on the weekend of 23-24 February. Given the 100 plus inches snow that we have plowed our way through since the start of this year, the ray of sunshine seemed promising, and indeed too good to pass up. At the very last minute we decided to take advantage of this good fortune that nature had sent us and move a week before planned. There was some unfinished maintenance at our new home, yet we decided to chance it :)Moving is tough work and while I am still unpacking the boxes (does that ever end??), I made sure the kitchen was set up and functioning on 'Day One'. Now where have I hear that phrase lately?? LoL, but seriously - I needed the inspiration and the creativity to survive the sheer tediousness of the move, the packing, and the unpacking. And what better way to unwin...

Aloo Parval ki Sabzi
2008-02-25 08:30:00 A typical dish from Calcutta and a dry vegetable dish with a Gujarati touch adopted from my mother in law. Parval is very popular among the Bengali Cuisine and a healthy vegetable, especially in the form of soup for stomach related ailments. The crispy nature of this vegetable even after it has been cooked along with potatoes, gives the special taste and crunch.

Vaghareli Khichdi and Gujarati Kadhhi - A Simple and Satisfying Meal
2008-01-18 17:17:00 As the culinary field transcends across geographical barriers, international cooking has taken a huge leap, and its fascinating to try new dishes that a fusion of tastes, cultures, and origins! But sometimes, getting back to your roots is also a satisfying experience. Comfort food will often be the food you have grown up eating, as it is filled with happy memories, your mom cooking in the kitchen, the whole family sitting and chatting at dinner, and the sense of familiar spices and surroundings....That is precisely what I revisted last night. A simple traditional Gujarati (gujarat is a state in western India) meal, comprising of "Vaghareli Khichdi and Kaddhi" Khichdi is just rice cooked with some spices and optional vegetables, while Kadhhi is like a curry made of buttermilk and besan (chickpea flour) This has been a staple food for a lot of gujaratis, but I am sure you would enjoy this too, irrepective of where you hail from!IngredientsFor Khichdi3 cups moong dal2 cup basmati or pl...

A Gujarati Boy
2007-11-11 17:11:00 One day many years ago at a school in South London a teacher said to the class of 5-year-olds, "I'll give $20 to the child who can tell me who was the most respected man, whom people consider God, who ever lived."An Irish boy put his hand up and said, "It was St. Patrick." The teacher said, "Sorry Alan, that's not correct."Then a Scottish boy put his hand up and said, "It was St. Andrew." The teacher replied, "I'm sorry, Hamish, that's not right either. Finally, a Gujarati boy raised his hand and said, "It was Jesus Christ." The teacher said, "That's absolutely right, Jayant, come up here and I'll give you the $20."As the teacher was giving Jayant his money, she said, "You know Jayant, since you are Gujarati, I was very surprised you said Jesus Christ." Jayant replied, "Yes, in my heart I knew it was Lord Krishna, but business is business!"

Mixed beans in a creamy gujarati style gravy
2007-03-19 01:08:00 Well, here I was browsing through Trupti's,beautiful blog, when I came across her recipe for Makai Chevdo, sweet corn simmered in milk and spices. I usually have more corn than I know what to do with but not last weekend. So, I started looking for what I could substitute, I found green peas, baby lima bean, and white kidney beans. So I figured since I like them all why stop at one of these ingredients. I did add a tomato and some sugar since I figured none of the above had the sweetness that corn had. My kids loved the idea so I also have since made a tofu-corn variation. Try the recipe as is or my variation, this is simple nutritious comfort food at its best.Mixed Beans in a creamy gujarati style gravyServes 4Ingredients2 tbsp oil1/2 tsp cumin seeds1/2 tsp mustard seeds1/8 tsp asafetida1/2 cup mixed dry baby lima and white kidney beans ( I cook these in a crockpot till soft)1 cup frozen peas2 green chillies finely chopped1 tsp salt1.5 tsp brown sugar1 cup milk1 cup water2 limesTo ...
