A Gulf in Giving: Oil-Rich States Starve the World Food Program

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and his top lieutenants on Monday are convening the first meeting of the U.N.?s Task Force on the Global Food Crisis. Ban says it will ?study the root causes of the crisis,? and propose solutions for ?coordinated global action? at a summit of world leaders in June. Lebanese singer causes Gulf storm
2008-05-05 06:44:00
A raunchy Lebanese singer is causing controversy in Bahrain, where she is due to perform for the first time. All but one of the members of the Gulf kingdom's Islamist-dominated parliament have approved a motion urging the government to ban Haifa Wehbe's show. They objected on the grounds that the pop superstar's performance would be sexually provocative, violating Islamic conventions and Bahrain's traditions. She really does look like Aria Giovanni, doesn't she?

Intimidated by Inflation, Gulf States Consider Cutting Ties with Dollar
2008-05-02 17:22:00
Even with a bit of a rebound, of late, the dollar is down more than 7% against the euro in the past six months, 12% in the past 12 months and nearly 28% in the last 54 months. The decline has been so drastic countries that have pegged their currencies to the beleaguered greenback are beginning to consider alternatives. But Gulf States, particularly, have been torched by the dollar’s decline. About 18% of inflation in the United Arab Emirates is caused by the Gulf state’s currency peg to the dollar, Emirates Business 24/7 reported, citing the Dubai Chamber of Commerce & Industry’s senior economist. The U.A.E.’s inflation rate is about 12%, the report said. Inflation has risen to 10% in Saudi Arabia and Qatar’s consumer prices rose 14% in the fourth-quarter, Bloomberg News reported. In an interview with Bloomberg, Kuwaiti Finance Minister Mustafa al-Shimali acknowledged that several Gulf States are considering abandoning the peg even though the United Arab Emirates a...

Gulf Coast Citizens Becoming Victims Once Again
2008-04-28 17:00:00
As the foreclosure epidemic sweeps through the gulf regions of states like Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana, victims of Hurricane Katrina are losing their homes once again, but not to any force of nature. More and more homes are going to auction along the Gulf Coast, and as foreclosures increase, families who have just gotten their lives back together are once again going to have to start over. But fortunately, many investors have been able to assist homeowners in this region by buying their properties from them before they are foreclosed, allowing them to avoid a credit ruining foreclosure and pay off their debt, while the investor gets a great deal.
Gulf emerging as big market for Indian medical tourism
2008-04-27 10:19:00
India's growing reputation as a major medical tourism destination is attracting more and more visitors from Gulf countries. And many travel agents are now offering packages combining treatment with a vacation. The Gulf is one of the most important markets for India's tourism industry. In the last two years, there has been a significant growth in the number of visitors from this region going to India for medical tourism. He said that though the West has been the traditional medical tourism destination for Gulf citizens, the trend changed after the 9/11 terror attacks and with the Indian government launching the Incredible India campaign, the total concept of India in the region has changed.. Ship hired by U.S. military fires warning shots in Gulf
2008-04-27 00:20:00
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A cargo ship hired by the U.S. military fired warning shots at approaching boats in the Gulf, the U.S. Navy said on Friday, underscoring tension in the region as the Pentagon sharpened its warnings to Iran. According to American defense officials, the Westward Venture cargo ship chartered by the U.S. Defense Department was traveling in international waters when two unidentified small boats approached on Thursday. After the boats failed to respond to radio queries and a warning flare, the cargo ship's security team fired "a few bursts" of machine gun and rifle warning shots, according to Cmdr. Lydia Robertson, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Navy's Bahrain-based Fifth Fleet. "The small boats left the area a short time later," she said by telephone. "They were able to avoid a serious incident by following the procedures that we use." The news helped push oil prices up more than $3 to $119.50 a barrel -- within striking distance of the record $119.90 hit earlier...
News: When Green Goes Commercial: Bio-Corn Fuels Gulf of Mexico's "Dead Zon
2008-04-26 13:00:00
"Dead zones" are areas in the world's oceans where marine life can not be supported due to depleted oxygen levels. Fish can flee potential suffocation by migrating to other areas, but they are often quickly rendered unconscious and die. Even if they survive studies show a decrease in size of reproductive organs causing low egg counts and lack of spawning. Slow moving bottom-dwelling creatures like clams, lobsters and oysters are unable to escape. All colonial animals are extinguished. (More)In other words: a "dead zone" is a vicious circle turning an ocean into a desert, incapable of supporting any marine life. The most notorious dead zone is a 22,126 square kilometer (8,543 square mile) region in the Gulf of Mexico, the size of the State of New Jersey. The area has about doubled in size since scientists began studying it in 1985, a good enough reason to be alarmed. One of the main causes of the Gulf's dead zone is the Mississippi River's dumping of high-nutrient runoff from the he...

The rise of the Gulf
2008-04-25 06:22:00
Surely only good can come from so much cash? Hardly. In the 1970s the Gulf’s money was a disaster for Latin America, for, recycled through Western banks, it caused a decade-long debt crisis. The Gulf itself suffered by inflicting stagflation on the West, thus causing a 20-year-long slump in oil prices. They built white elephants ...

SeeTheGlobe.com Travel Article :: As we were driving along the Tamiami Trail (90/41) at the Northern edge of the Everglades National Park, signs advertising air boat tours appeared every few minutes. Guarantees were given on the amount of excitement one will have, the wildlife they would see and the fun. We resisted all of these as we had already planned on taking part in the Everglades National Park Boat Tour which departs from Everglades City and visits the Ten Thousand Islands area. Clear signs along the roads meant that we found our destination without problems. It was a weekday around noon and Everglades City was quite deserted. A bit spooky. After a quick bite at the solid JT's Island Grill & Gallery we parked at the Gulf Coast Visitor Center and proceeded to inquire about departure times.Rate and Review : Everglades National Park Boat Tour from the Gulf Coast Visitor Center in Everglades City, Florida
Superheroes head for the Persian Gulf

Hollywood hopes theme parks, characters fly in Middle EastApril 20, MSNBCLOS ANGELES - Wonder Woman, King Kong and Shrek are heading for the Persian Gulf as part of the rush to build what could become the world's largest theme park playground. But even as the ink dries on the billion-dollar deals in the United Arab Emirates, movie studios are grappling with ways to make their signature characters and amusement parks fly in the conservative Muslim region.Politically sensitive characters such as Captain America could be left at home. Prayer rooms will join the list of accommodations, and menus will likely feature falafel and humus alongside pizza and hot dogs. There's even a move afoot to offer Bollywood dance shows to lure Indian visitors.Investors, studios and park operators are all aiming to cash in on what some observers call the Middle East's decades-long fascination with American culture. Hollywood movies are popular in the region, and Western fashions are hot commodities among...

Private Investment Is Key to Rebuilding The Gulf Coast
2008-04-17 00:00:00
On a recent visit to Mississippi I met with some very smart people to discuss the recovery efforts along the Gulf Coast. This effort has been going on for nearly 3 years after Katrina. We all agreed that the job creation efforts were having a real impact on the local economy. We also agreed that the rebuilding of the affordable housing stock was gaining momentum but is seriously lacking. Think about these numbers. By most accounts the Gulf coast needs a minimum of 80,000 affordable housing units. If we see numbers of homes being build at let?s say 2,000 units per year that would mean that in 40 years the current demand would be met. That is right 40 years. This assumes that the dema

DOHA, Qatar - Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni arrived here Sunday to attend the 8th annual Doha Forum on Democracy, Development and Free Trade, at which she has been invited to give a keynote speech. Senior Lebanese and Iranian officials responded by canceling their participation. “The Arab states cannot continue sitting on the fence when it comes to support and backing for the peace process,” Livni told Haaretz Sunday. The most prominent cancellation over Livni’s speech came from the Lebanese parliament speaker and leader of the Shia Amal movement, Nabih Beri. Beri was scheduled to address the forum as well, and to hold talks with senior Qatari government officials concerning the political crisis in Lebanon. Manatee Sighting in Gulf At the beach in Pelican Bay in Naples, FL

Today's open house at 400 Lambiance Cir #202 was pretty steady. 99% of the people coming through were working with a Realtor or have been looking at real estate in Pelican Bay for years. I did meet a nice couple from Chicago land. They had never seen Pelican Bay before and I enjoyed showing them the amenities that Pelican Bay has to offer. Speaking of amenities.......yesterday my husband and I headed down to the Sandpiper Restaurant at the beach in Pelican Bay for a late lunch. We just made it to the restaurant before they stopped serving. It was a crystal clear day. As we were eating our lunch, we spotted FOUR manatees out in the Gulf. I wish I had a better camera with me than my cell phone. That would have made a great photo! After lunch, the Gulf water was actually warm enough for us thin skinned Floridians to go in for a swim. The photo below was taken with my cell phone but you can see how clear the water was yesterday. A...
