Already December 30 th and I haven't post my gift from Second Annual Season's Eatings in English. Katie from Thyme for Cooking had this brilliant idea to organize a spice exchange. I got a parcel from Judith, a retired teacher living now in Virginia, obiously with no blog. Originally she comes from Louisiana and so she send me Cajun Seasoning, manifactured in Baton Rouge and a recipe for Seafood Gumbo. Although we live in Schleswig-Holstein, the land between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, my three gentlemen aren't fond of seafood, especially of shrimps and crabs. Judith recommended also a chicken and sausage version, I cooked on December, 22 th as a Slow Cooker version. Am Sonnabend brachte mir der Briefträger ein Päckchen mit "Cajun Seasoning", das mir Judith, die lange Zeit in New Orleans gelebt hat, durch die Teilnahme an Season's Eatings geschickt hatte. Sie hatte ein Rezept für Seafood Gumbo beigefügt, meinte aber, man könne das Rezept auch mit Hähnchen machen. Ein Glück, denn meine Herren mögen weder Fisch noch die wirbellosen Meeresbewohner sehr gerne. Ich habe mich für die Crockpot-Version von Gumbo mit Hühnerfleisch und Chorizo entschieden, damit noch genügend Zeit für Wochenendaktivitäten blieb. Nach Herstellung der schokoladenbraunen und zeitaufwändigen Roux übernahm dann der Slow Cooker den Rest. His family had some Cajun friends who were hosting the festivities that year. What I experienced was the quintessential holiday experience. The food was really sublime and the mood was uniquely festive. I have rarely encountered such genuine and generous people in the years since and I will always remember how great that Thanksgiving was.I have always had a weakness for hot food especially if it was somewhat esoteric.
