Google Music Search Launches In India – No More Guruji?
2010-10-22 11:36:00
Positioned as a platform that will fight music piracy Google has launched a music search engine in India. The music search engine is now live and can be accessed on http://www.google.co.in/music.- It aggregates music for legal sources like in.com, saavn and saregama. Music search was made mainstream by the Indian search engine Guruji.com when it aggregated music across various sources. The difference in Google’s model is that the music is completely legal unlike guruji which ran into trouble. Google’s attempt is to promote buying legal music by making legal music more accessible. Challenge for Google Music Though legal approach is great inorder to be a comprehensive search engine for music Google would need to get several digital rights which wont be simple to acquire. Also a non comprehensive search engine will disappoint users as they wont be able to find their favorite tracks. Guruji.com CEO & Execs Arrested For Copyright Infringment
2010-05-02 00:13:00
Anurag Dod (CEO) of Guruji.com and other top Guruji.com executives have landed themselves in deep trouble after they were arrested in Bangalore on charges of copyright infringement by making musical content online for free which is originally owned by T-Series (Super Cassettes Industries Ltd). T-Series president- marketing media publishing (TV) Vinod Bhanushali said that Guruji.com has been using the T-Series catalogue and the pirated website (Guruji.com) works on a non-investment model and uses content from other pirate websites. This is not the first time such an incident has happened. In February 2010,  a similar copyright infringement incident showed Six Google employees the way to jail in Italy. And In 2004, the CEO of Baazee.com (ebay.in), was arrested due to the sale of pornographic material on the portal. Guruji.com Introduces Ringtone Search – We Spoke To Anurag Dod, CEO &
2009-09-17 07:48:00
Guruji.com has been launching search verticals since quite sometime now. So they have ventured into finance, music, movie tickets earlier and now its the time for ringtones. Given the huge number of mobile penetration in India this might be a really good service. Guruji also has a search algorithm which they claim can comprehend the user intent; handle attached or detached versions of a word; understand phonetic variations as well as capture more advanced variations of a word which are not captured through the phonetic approach. Also as Guruji.com is available on mobile as well this search can be done right from your mobile phone and the ringtone can be downloaded directly to the phone. We spoke to Anurag Dod, CEO of Guruji.com to know more about Guruji’s plans: Q.1) Guruji has been in the news for its music aggregator. Can you share this story with us? First and only music search engine in India where users can listen to music, search for MP3 music and ringtones. Users can ...

Guruji spreads its wings with music search
2008-07-15 06:42:00
India had been long missing a good music search engine (aka meta aggregator). I was always surprised that this niche had never been tapped very seriously. However, in a gap of a week, we seem to have 2 very good music search engines serving loads of Hindi songs for Indian Audience. Just couple of days back I wrote about Phulki, and was quite happy with their offering. Close to their heals, guruji, India's first homegrown search engine have launched a Music aggregation site. They too, like Phulki have done a great job of music aggregation. They claim to have aggregated songs and albums starting from 1932 till date.

2008-03-20 10:33:00

2007-10-02 04:22:00
Guruji.com the first local search engine to get funded has launched a new feature of searching which movies are running at which theatre (they seem to be powering this with the help of nowrunning.com). Earlier Onyomo another local search startup had also launched a similar feature.Guruji's Movie Search helps the users to search in different ways. For example users can search for:Movies in a particular city (“movies in Bangalore” ) A particular movie in a city (“Chak de India in Mumbai”) All the movies in a particular theater (“movies in PVR Delhi”) All the movies of a particular actor (“Sanjay Dutt Movies”) The cities currently covered by this service are Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad, Nagpur, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Mangalore and Lucknow.I tried giving a shot at searching the movie "Dhol" on both guruji and onyomo. Just compare the guruji result and the onyomo result you will real...

How will Indian local search startups tackle Google India Initiatives?
2007-08-22 01:00:00
Google, with this announcement have created a big competition for Indian local search start-ups. My initial impressions of there Google local search was pretty good, but they will go from good to excellent in no time with the kind of backing and experience they have. Local Google search in US is unmatched even with competition from biggies like yahoo and live.
Guruji Spamming on Rediff?
2007-08-02 08:05:00
Last month we blogged about Guruji’s Search and Win contest and whether it was a nice strategy to achieve long term searchers.Well how successful has the contest been?We don’t really have figures on that yet but we’ll try to get some for you.Let’s get to the point now. If you are a frequent Rediff user and use Rediff as your news source, you might notice this at the bottom of every recent article:Jessy Poonawaala seems to have a lot of time and a lot of determination to win something in this contest or is it someone at Guruji’s end who’s ensuring some Spam Marketing?Referral Contests do often go viral and is something most companies look to achieve. Refer and win, refer and earn etc is a pretty old strategy..It’s a win-win situation for Guruji though –This is ensuring they grab a few eyeballs and if they are questioned all they have to do is say – ‘It is User Generated Referral Marketing’.Do share your views with us&h...

Guruji - Search and Win! Innovative, but will it retain users?
2007-07-13 08:48:00
Let’s start off with a comment  which we got from one of our readers Mahesh at WATblog.com:Mahesh didn’t like the iBiBo ‘Earn crores to blog’ campaign. He feels Guruji is doing the same thing:"…i am skepticalabout users using Guruji after the contest is over. In my employer company, my colleagues use Guruji daily for the sake of winning the prize but not for professional use. They still use Google to find stuff, but they use Guruji to win prizes not to use their technology."ByIndia have a $ 5,000,000 sweepstake running too…They should have at least mentioned the prize money in INR.Anyways, getting back to point – do contests ensure only short term participation? Can they possibly get users for a longer time?Well, let’s look at this campaign by Guruji. They are executing it pretty well... Showcase your advantage – thrill and convince the user at the same time – and hope he’ll see the benefit of Gu...

2007-06-15 16:45:00
The war for Indian Search engine space is heating up with two challengers Guruji and Byindia challenging google's hegemony in india by offering india specific search but google is not taking it easy and has taken lot of initiatives to connect to indians.Guruji is getting a lot of limelight in Indian media with both Domain-b and Hindu this is mainly because of credentials behind Guruji.Guruji is a search engine developed by 2 IIT Delhi graduates Anurag Dod an Electrical engineer and Masters in Computers from Michigan with experience in companies like ebay and Gaurav Mishra a Comp Science Engineer and Masters from NY with Experience in companies like Microsoft and Nokia along with these solid credentials they are backed by Sequoia Capital who originally backed google and Suvir Sujan co founder of bazee.com which was acquired by ebay. Guruji - The swadeshi search engine
2007-03-08 11:55:02
If Gandhiji were alive, he'd have been extremely happy (using) seeing Guruji. What if it doesn't yet rank his website on the top, it at least is not just some search engine developed by firangis. Being a champion of "swadeshi", our beloved father of the nation would have been happy on seeing the indigenously developed search engine and the people behind it who are working arduously to make this product better each day. Follow us as we take you through the thoughts of Anurag Dod, co-founder of Guruji.com, the first ever Indian search engine aspiring to showcase the "Indian" content to the world. 1. As we understand, Guruji.com is a search engine focused only on mining Indian content. But for the benefit of our readers could you please elaborate on the need for a country specific search engine? Guruji.com is India focussed search engine which crawls the India relevant information and adds Indian context to the queries e.g. if user is searching for 'Preside...

Exclusive interview with CEO of Guruji.com
2006-12-01 03:17:05
I wrote about Guruji.com on the very first day of their press release and then followed up with another post clarifying on what they are doing. My initial response was skeptic as I didn’t quite get what their value proposition was. Local search definitely sounded like an opportunity but that clearly wasn’t their main (or only) focus. In the Indian content search area, Google.co.in already seemed to be doing a good enough job. I am sure some of you would have got similar doubts, but hey, they are backed by Sequoia and generated quite a bit of buzz in the media. I had a chat with Anurag Dod, their CEO and asked a few questions to clarify some of the doubts (Update: added conclusion at the end - due to some technical snag, missed adding this when first posted the article) What is your biggest value proposition? We want to be the one stop shop for anyone search anything related to India. Be it India related content or Indian city specific data. “Think India - Think Gur...
More on Guruji.com - Web search or Local search?
2006-12-01 03:17:05
I first wrote about Guruji.com the day of the press release on Oct 12th. As expected, there has been a lot of news all over the media and quite a lot of comments/discussions here on iLeher because: 1. It drew comparisons with the media and investors’ darling Google 2. Search is hot (all Internet users today search because of the information overload on the web, and every searcher is unknowingly a potential customer) 3. They are funded by Sequoia - one of the most successful VC firms in Silicon Valley 4. They have a smart and experienced team on board I myself being a software professional working in the field of search, have special interest in the technology and so I have been actively following and participating in various discussions about what could it mean for Indian internet industry. Obviously there has been a lot of speculation whether it will replace Google in India, or just add to the list of previous attempts like byindia.com, khoj.com etc, or they will rule Local s...
