Scanning The Countryside: What Artists Want From CDs?Still
2011-04-21 17:45:00
By now, there?s not a recording artist, country or otherwise, who hasn?t heard that we?re in a new era ? fundamentally, a singles era. They?ve all heard how CD album chart leaders are topping those charts with lower sales figures than anyone can remember. And they?ve all heard horror stories (as have followers of The ...
Album Review: Nitty Gritty Dirt Band ? Speed of Life
2009-09-23 16:12:00
It’s been five years since the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band released an album. Though they haven’t exactly been resting on their laurels, this interval between records isn’t too surprising: After all, once a band’s been together for 45 years, don’t you think they’d get a little bored with it all? Listening to Speed of Life, ...
Album Review: Guy Clark – Somedays the Song Writes You
2009-09-21 21:08:00
Guy Clark is one of the premier songwriters of his generation–even that might be an understatement. Unlike his friend, the late, great Townes Van Zandt, Clark’s songs have always been readily accessible, yet still manage to contain layers of depth. He likes to talk about the holes he leaves in his guitar playing, but it’s also the holes he leaves in his songs that allow the listener to insert themselves and connect with the message without feeling like nothing more than an observant bystander. At the same time, it’s never been Clark’s voice that has provided an overwhelmingly compelling reason to listen to his work, although he is able to connect with his songs and deliver them in a way that few others have been able to duplicate. But his voice has noticeably diminished since the outstanding Workbench Songs was released back in 2006. A lack of tempo, in conjunction with his aging voice and sparse production that’s even more scant when not listenin...

2008-05-22 17:33:00
Alan Jackson falls in at No. 10 on Forbes’ list of the top-earning country music stars, but Toby Keith takes the top spot with a cool $48 million in earnings over the last year. Bob from the Lefsetz Letter has written an interesting piece on Tuesday night’s American Idol Top-2, in which he talks, specifically, about ...
Guy Clark, Joe Ely, John Hiatt & Lyle Lovett At The Paramount Theater
2008-05-08 16:00:00
Donning a brace on his right foot, Guy Clark limped across stage with the aid of crutches and a thunderous applause on Monday night at the Paramount Theater. Joe Ely, John Hiatt and Lyle Lovett followed close behind and sat in the same order. The gentlemen two seats to my right diligently jotted down notes ...
Texas Tunesmith Heir Hayes Carll Bears Torch For New Generation
2008-05-07 17:35:00
Chip Frazier feels that Hayes Carll is carrying the torch for the next generation of the Texas/Americana Troubadours. He has the same aspects of humor, songs, and storytelling that made his predecessors–guys like Guy Clark, Jerry Jeff Walker, Jimmy Dale Gilmore, Joe Ely and Ray Wilie Hubbard–great. Bill Friskics-Warren agrees that Hayes Carll conjures up thoughts ...
Buddy Miller Gets Cover Treatment From No Depression
2008-04-02 17:17:00
No Depression plans to enshrine Buddy Miller on the cover of their last issue. John Goodspeed gushes over the new George Strait album and says while Strait can nail a number of styles, “he really hammers western swing,” particularly the duet with Dean Dillon on “West Texas Town.” Robert Earl Keen shares writing credits with Dillon ...

Rodney Crowell, Vince Gill, & Barbara Mandrell Inducted Into Music City Wal
2007-10-12 18:09:00
I’ve posted a number of interviews with Billy Joe Shaver and I may be a little biased, but I think the interview that Brady scored for The 9513 is the best yet. I was giddy like a school girl when he walked next door to Waterloo Records and played me the recording. On November 20 Time ...
The Cape
2007-09-19 06:22:00
I heard another good song today that I haven’t heard in a long time–The Cape, by Guy Clark. If you haven’t heard Steve Earl, Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark Together at the Bluebird Cafe, it is a must have…buy it today.  The stories these guys tell alone are worth the price of admission.  ...
Great Topic
2007-08-29 19:05:00
There’s a discussion going on MusicCityBloggers about the saddest country songs ever.  A lot of the people commenting are obviously pretty new to country music, only naming songs that have been released in the last 20 years or so.  To me, the list begins and ends with “I’m so Lonesome I Could Cry” by Hank ...
?They?re just songs. It?s not brain surgery.? - Guy Clark
2007-06-22 16:02:00
Mark Adams has an in depth review of To Live’s To Fly: The Ballad of the Late, Great Townes Van Zandt by John Kruth. Throughout most of the article Adams refers to the author as Knuth, if you can get passed that it sounds like the book is an interesting read. Knuth clearly has good material ...
