Bounty Killer Bottled in Guyana
2008-04-22 15:36:00
Gunfire marred the highly publicized Ignition Concert at the National Park early yesterday morning that featured a line-up of Jamaican artistes, among them the controversial Bounty Killa. The Jamaican, who has a record of homophobic tunes and glorifies guns in his music, was the closing act and he held true to form during the brief performance that was interrupted by two audio breakdowns, an unruly crowd and subsequent gunfire. Jonathan Beepat of Wildfire Productions which promoted the show told Stabroek News yesterday that police fired two warning shots to tame the crowd after Bounty Killa?s performance was twice interrupted by the audio cut-off. This could not be confirmed with the police yesterday. He said those are the only gunshots he was aware of. But gunshots rang out twice in the Park - a few minutes into Bounty Killa?s act and yet again when the show ended abruptly and patrons scurried to safety. On the second occasion, the gunshots numbered around four. Beepat said he w...

West Indies v Sri Lanka, 1st Test, Guyana West Indies and Sri Lanka seek to end long wait The Preview by George Binoy Chris Gayle has recovered from injuries sustained in South Africa and has returned to lead his side © Getty Images At the launch of West Indies' home season earlier this month, a senior official of the West Indies Cricket Board said its goal was to "regain the pinnacle of world cricket by 2012." Given West Indies' current form, and their results over the last ten years, they are probably a bit behind schedule. Yet if they are to start now, the portents are favourable: their last series victory against strong opposition, with due respect to Zimbabwe and Bangladesh, was in 2003 - at home against Sri Lanka. Their last Test series showed a flicker of unprecedented promise when a fully fit fast-bowling attack led by a new captain, Chris Gayle, spurred West Indies on to their first-ever Test victory in South Africa in December 200...

Diwali Celebrations Around The World: India, Britian, Guyana, Indonesia, Ma
2007-10-28 05:38:00
Diwali Celebrations take place everywhere in India, at dusk when darkness unfolds itself, you can see a spectacular illumination of tiny flickering lamps adorning in rows - at homes, buildings and streets. All sorts of makeshift stalls suddenly spring out on the pavements and the bazaars are choc-a-bloc with people and all sweet shops display their latest temptations. In Punjab, the day following Diwali is known as tikka when sisters make a paste with saffron and rice and place an auspicious mark on their brother?s foreheads as a symbolic gesture to ward off all harm. In North India on the day of the Diwali the children emerge, scrubbed clean to get into their festive attire, ...

A visit to Guyana
2007-10-26 20:51:00
Our second place winner in the MACO Share your Caribbean experience competition is Liesl Harewood. Liesl incorporated her own style of writing to give us her view of Guyana, a land where she was born, but moved from at a very young age to live in Barbados, which she considers home.?Since my Guyana experience is rather limited, my recent trip there a few months ago was not through the eyes of a returning national, but a tourist whose experience I have captured in my entry," says Liesl.According to the Guyana Tourism Authority, the country is often described as:"the Caribbean gate to South America due to its unique location on the North Atlantic Coast of South America, bordered by Venezuela, Suriname and Brazil. It is where the virgin rainforest leads to the Amazon Basin, where the jungle is still unexplored, rivers uncharted and mountains unclimbed. With over 300 waterfalls, including one of the World's longest Single drop falls, the stunning Kaieteur at over 700 feet, over 800 spec...
Deputy Prime Minister Coerces Barbadians To Farm In The Guyana Bush
2007-10-19 11:56:00
GUYANA’S OFFER to Barbadians and other nationals of the Caribbean Community for agriculture lands leased merely at BDS$10 per acre over a long period of years, has drawn sharply conflicting positions from spokespersons for the ruling Barbados Labour Party (BLP) and the Opposition Democratic Labour Party (DLP). Not surprisingly, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economic Development Mia Mottley, who disclosed the offer following her recent visit to Guyana for the Trade and Investment Exposition (GUYEXPO), welcomed the gesture when she spoke of the potentials for both countries’ agricultural and economic development. Barbados Labour Party position on the Guyana Land Offer In contrast, the DLP’s candidate for St Michael West, James Paul, was dismissive. He deemed it “nonsensical” and “ridiculous”, and linked the offer to a claimed attempt by the Owen Arthur administration to divert Barbadians’ attention from problems of land acquisit...
