Future Habitats
2008-09-10 06:25:00
Dr. Norbert PintschWe have already discussed and illustrated Technology and Economy in connection with extreme housing in in parts 1 and 2. Here we discuss the area of Philosophy and the Religion in order to complete the whole picture. First of all a note on, perhaps surprising, aspects of Religion: The basis of thinking of believers as well as non-believers is identical. If non-believers are of the opinion, they are free of religious limitations and think clearly on scientific lines, so this shows actually their incapacity to admit the influence of religion on our way of thinking. One should accept this fact in order to understand the errors in the usual way of thinking, giving a shocking dimension to the usual concepts of finding problem solutions. In western systems, one is inclined in religious matters to make a comparison between bananas and Neem-tree, i.e. one compares, what is actually incomparable, e.g. a religion with a total life system. One can only compare in order to rec...

Sea-level Rise and Coastal Habitats in the Pacific Northwest
2008-02-01 03:06:00
Global climate change is a reality. Human emissions are driving unprecedented and dangerous climate change, with coastal regions on the front lines of its effects. If we allow climate change to continue unabated, it will have significant effects across the world. Here in the Pacific Northwest, it will jeopardize the health of our most valued natural companions: shellfish, salmon, shorebirds,...
Backyard Wildlife Habitats
2007-12-28 04:54:00
With the increasing influx of new housing developments and shopping complexes, more and more wildlife habitats are becoming extinct each year. To help restore some part of the ecosystem, our backyards can become lifesavers for many animals such as birds, butterflies, bats, squirrels, raccoons, chipmunks, skunks and frogs. What advantage to you gain from this? The obvious seems to be able to watch animals in their natural environment; the other is that you will have to spend less time and money keeping up your yard. What constitutes a Backyard Wildlife Habitat? It is simple, really - a backyard for the needs of wildlife. However, you must be certified, by at least having a small area - as small as a few square feet - and be ready to show or prove the following:1. Food: trees and plants, feeders for birds, squirrels, birdseeds, insects (for lizards and toads)2. Water (for drinking and bathing); birdbaths, ponds, water gardens, dripping hose, dish.3. Cover: shrubs, crown vetch, a disca...
Polar bears and penguins do not share habitats
2007-12-23 22:52:00
The idea that polar bears and penguins populate the same geographical region is a common misconception that plagues far too many individual's minds. Sure, it might seem like a nice thing to believe - polar bears roaring ferociously, chasing poor, defenseless penguins around over snow and ice, and devouring them whole. This, however, is pure hogwash. Polar bears are entirely native to the northern hemisphere, on the complete opposite end of the Earth from where penguins make their homes. Perhaps the worst offender in spreading penguin-polar bear interaction lies is the Coca Cola company. Polar bears and penguins are frequently and unrealistically seen frolicking together and enjoying a refreshing bottle of Coke. It is high time Coke ended these commercials. I recently purchased a package of gift labels, only to find that much to my dismay a number of the labels featured penguins and polar bears jovially interacting. Such a sight would surely make any intelligent individual ...

Coastal Habitats Are The Biosphere's Most Imperiled Ecosystems
2007-10-22 12:54:00
The BBVA Foundation’s Third Debate on Conservation Biology allowed leading international experts to present findings of their latest research into the scale, causes and consequences of global loss of coastal habitats। The disappearance of these ecosystems, which include coral reefs, mangrove forests, wetlands and seagrass meadows, has serious consequences like loss of biodiversity, depletion of exploitable living resources, impaired capacity of the oceans to sequester CO2 and loss of the leisure value of the coastal zone. Not only that, the coastline becomes more vulnerable to the increased erosion associated with rising sea levels.Carlos Duarte, researcher at the Spanish Council for Scientific Research and coordinator of the debate, informed the public that “coastal habitats are disappearing at a rate of between 1.2% and 9% a year and are now the biosphere’s most imperiled systems, with rates of loss 4 to 10 ten times faster than those of the tropical rainforest.”The caus...

Self Sustaining Space Habitats A Possibility?
2007-10-19 23:09:00
(Hat Tip: Space Pragmatism and Engadget, Image credit: NASA)If humanity is ever going to venture beyond lunar orbit, then they need to develop a way to survive off world indefinitely, or at least for long periods of time (as in years). While no one has yet developed a biosphere that can survive without outside assistance, it looks as if James Chartres (an aerospace engineer from Australia) may have figured out how to create one that is "95 percent efficient."(Cosmos Magazine) The Luna Gaia concept integrates technologies such as the Closed Equilibrated Biological Aquatic System (CEBAS), an enclosed aquarium designed by the German Aerospace Centre and the Micro-Ecological Life Support System Alternative (MELIiSSA) developed by the European Space Agency. MELIiSSA uses microbes to purify water, recycle carbon dioxide and derive edible material from waste products.Algae – which generates oxygen from carbon dioxide via photosynthesis, and doesn't require pollinating – is the key to t...

Accessories You should Include in Iguana Habitats
1969-12-31 19:00:00
If you have met the basic light, heating, space and humidity requirements of an iguana habitat, you might think that your work is all done. However, it should be stated that those are just the basic parts of an iguana habitat. This means that although these factors alone will let your iguana survive, these may ...
