Marine Acquitted in Haditha Case
2008-06-05 16:27:00 Here’s a headline you won’t see much of, today: CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. —AP- A military jury acquitted a Marine intelligence officer Wednesday of charges that he tried to help cover up the killings of 24 Iraqis. Cheers erupted as the seven-officer panel cleared 1st Lt. Andrew Grayson, who was the first of three Marines to be tried in the biggest U.S. criminal case involving Iraqi deaths linked to the war. The verdict came just five hours after deliberations began. The judge, Maj. Brian E. Kasprzyk, admonished the noisy courtroom, saying: “There will be no more of that.” Grayson, who has always maintained he did nothing wrong, was not at the scene of the killings of men, women and children on Nov. 19, 2005, in Haditha. He was accused of telling a sergeant to delete photographs of the dead from a digital camera and laptop computer. Outside the courtroom, a visibly emotional Grayson said the verdict was an end to a terrible ordeal. That’s great news, al...

?Battle For Haditha? Throws Truth Out the Window
2008-05-08 18:34:00 I love how liberals use words. For instance, a movie made by British filmmaker Nick Broomfield called "Battle For Haditha" is called an "excellent documentary," a "fictional drama," and a "recounting," all at once. I had no idea those words were synonyms. Armand White from NYPress.com can't say enough glowing things about this piece of trash masquerading as a documentary. He talks about how Broomfield "can juxtapose the insurgents cold-bloodedly planting an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) with a U.S. commander deploying a satellite sniper." How are these two situations at all the same thing? The movie's entry in Wikipedia is even better. "The outline is reportedly based on rumours," says the entry, "as the trial had not even begun when they started filming, with the assumption that the Marines on trial are guilty and the Victims family and neighbours were telling the truth." And yet you call this a documentary?

The Holidays give them that reason.I had a talk with one of my (distant) relations, Cousin It, this weekend. Since the only thing this particular person has in common with me was that he served in the military (as a pouge paper-pusher) back in the 80s, the conversation quickly and invariably turned to Iraq vis-a-vis Gitmo and torture. You would think that since he is as far to the right, as I am to the left we would have found a political fulcrum in the conversation. Haditha: The massacre that wasn't, and its political exploitation
2007-10-19 10:24:00 The incident at Haditha--or the massacre, as it is often called--is due for a wholesale rethinking. The allegations are that in 2005 U.S. Marines went on a killing spree and deliberately executed 24 Iraqi civilians. The casualties have drawn an extraordinary amount of political attention, becoming an emblem for everything critics say is wrong with the Iraq war--in the common telling, another My Lai. Thus Congressman Jack Murtha, a decorated combat veteran, made accusations of war crimes and said the Marines had killed "in cold blood." These are serious charges; and military justice continues to deal with them seriously, though thankfully at a slower pace than politics. Now the prosecutions have mostly unraveled. It seems Haditha, though tragic, was exploited politically, and the allegations were exaggerated, if not unfounded. Here is what we know. On November 17, 2005, Kilo Company of the First Marine Regiment's Third Battalion was returning from a routine logistics mission in Ha...
