They will also thank our troops, civilians, and coalition partners for their heroic work in extremely difficult circumstances. In Iraq, the senators will examine whether the tactical buildup of U.S. troops has resulted in the progress necessary to resolve Iraq?s political differences, provide basic services to the Iraqi people, and create long-term stabil...
Chuck Hagel (R) For Barack Obama’s Veep Pick?
2008-07-12 06:35:00 UnLikely, “Mismatched Duo” To Tour Iraq Together Hey, let’s not read TOO much into this trip into Iraq by Barack Obama and former Senator Chuck Hagel (R-NE). The “viral blogosphere” and the MSM is pondering and pontificating the possibility “Barry” might be courting the “maverick” (no, not a “maverick” in a John McCain sense of the term) Republican from The Great State of Nebraska for his currently open running mate position. Can we say “old news”? Look, I covered this back in March for those who might just be newer readers of this blog. But — HEY — this is “shocking, breaking NEWS” today, apparently. Am I surprised at the “latest rumor”? YOU be the judge… From The GTL™ — March 2nd, 2008: “… Senior advisers confirmed that Hagel, a highly decorated Vietnam war veteran and one of McCain’s closest friends in the Senate, was considered an i...
Senator Hagel Hints At Obama Support
2008-06-04 09:07:00 In a far reaching interview with the German publication, Der Spiegel, the maverick Republican senator from Iowa made clear his disagreements with the Bush administration and his apparent differences with his friend, John McCain. Press Release: "Senate Passes Webb-Hagel GI Bill "
2008-05-22 21:04:00 The following statement was released today by Senator Hagel's office:Senate Passes Webb-Hagel GI BillMay 22nd, 2008 - The United States Senate today passed, by an overwhelming margin of 75-22, the FY08 Emergency Supplemental bill that included the ?Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act? sponsored by Senators Chuck Hagel (R-NE) and Jim Webb (D-VA). The legislation modernizes educational benefits for members of our Armed Forces who have served since the attacks of September 11, 2001.?This bill is about giving the men and women of our military the same education benefits that all of America?s veterans have received since WWII. What this bill does is rotate forward the earned benefits into the 21st century so they are relevant to the realities of the cost of education today. We are fulfilling a commitment that we have all made to our veterans. By investing in education we are investing in America?s future and continuing to build a society worthy of the sacrifices of our vetera...
Nightly Ramble: Split decision, Hagel, Sock Puppets, Rebranding, more
2008-05-22 01:33:00 As predicted, Clinton in Kentucky, Obama in Oregon. The Depth of Clinton’s Kentucky win is striking , though. I’ll have to check, but I don’t know as there has ever been a Democrat who has won the White House who ever lost as many states by so wide a margin, as Obama and Clinton both have. Can’t say much for their being elected. Anyone having any doubts about my assessment of Chuck Hagel should doubt no more. A tragic situation, certainly. But worth this response? No. Government shouldn’t have been involved here. This is government leaping into a situation so as to ‘do something’ at a level where unintended consequences ensue. Same here. Billy, I have to tell you. Your answers here and your cries here would seem to be an answer for why this was such a disconnect for you. The title, perhaps, was hard to deal with? Just a thought. We’ve Located Glenn Greenwald. Kaus thinks the electoral math doesn’t look good for Obama. Thats mil...

Chuck Hagel Criticizes McCain
2008-05-21 20:19:00 While John McCain has Joe Lieberman putting on a Zell MIller act this year, there is now a Republican criticizing McCain and defending Obama. Chuck Hagel Isn?t Really A Republican
2008-05-21 19:02:00 Chuck Hagel should really stop pretending to be a Republican, when he hasn’t actually acted like one in years. "Whither Hagel"
2008-04-21 01:09:00 Robert Novak has a brief discussion of Senator Hagel in his piece from yesterday. Friends of Sen. Chuck Hagel, the Senate's sharpest critic of President Bush's Iraq policy, say there is no chance he will endorse a Democrat for president this year. That does not mean, however, that Hagel necessarily will back the Republican candidate, his friend John McCain. That could depend on whether McCain devises an Iraq exit strategy. Hagel and McCain, who occupy offices in the same second floor corridor of the Russell Senate Office Building, have been spotted conferring on two recent occasions.A footnote: Although the conservative Hagel is an unlikely running mate for either Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton, he conceivably could end up as secretary of defense for either Democrat.

I-35W bridge downed by design flaw; infrastructure issues fade from headlin
2008-01-19 02:10:00 Buried inside the nation’s news pages ? lost among the big takeout stories about which presidential candidate said what to whom with what insulting effect, President Bush’s confusing trip to the Middle East, and surge and resurgence in Iraq and Afghanistan ? was the reason 13 people died and 100 were injured when the Interstate 35W bridge in Minneapolis collapsed last year. A weakness built into that bridge went undetected for 40 years because it involved a part so basic that highway departments and bridge contractors seldom considered it even when they reanalyzed a bridge?s capacity, experts said Tuesday. The flaw: Undersized gusset plates. So, case closed? It wasn’t a portentous sign of a failing national infrastructure after all? Just a sad, tragic miscalculation by an engineer four decades ago? Nope. The discovery of a tragic design flaw does not change the fact that the nation’s roads, bridges, harbors, sewage treatment plants, railroads, dams, reservo...

NE-Sen: Hagel Out
2007-09-08 22:44:00 The face of the GOP anti-war movement is not running for reelection next year. Senator Chuck Hagel (R-Nebraska), who is already facing a strong primary challenge by the state's young and conservative Attorney General Jon Bruning, has decided not to stand for a third term.Despite Nebraska's conservative leanings, an open seat is good news to Democrats, who from 1989-1997 held both Senate seats and currently still holds the other one. Democrats are banking on former Senator Bob Kerrey, who retired in 2001, or Omaha Mayor Mike Fahey. Republican candidates may include Bruning, former Congressman Hal Daub, or current Secretary of Agriculture and former Governor Mike Johanns.Nebraska is not a state where the Republicans wante to see a competitive race. Slight Lean Republican. Only Johanns can win this for them.

Hagel to Retire; Doolittle to Run
2007-09-08 17:45:00 There's fresh news on the reelection plans of two Republican congressional incumbents, both courtesy of Political Wire. Nebraska Senator Chuck Hagel has told his staff and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell that he will announce Monday his intention to retire at the end of his term. This article indicates that Hagel will also state "he does not intend to be a candidate for any office in 2008." Democrat Bob Kerrey, a two-term senator who retired in 2000 and who also is a former Nebraska governor, has said a number of times that if Hagel retires he would likely enter the race next year, and would be a formidable candidate for the Democrats in this heavily Republican state. For the Republicans, Attorney General Jon Bruning and two others are already announced candidates for Hagel's seat, but Hagel's retirement is expected to draw other prominent Republicans into the race. CA-04 Representative John Doolittle "defiantly declared" in a news conference Friday that he would run for ree...

Chuck Hagel to Retire
2007-09-08 16:44:00 Senator Chuck Hagel from Nebraska will announce his retirement on Monday and close his two terms of service on January 5, 2009. Hagel will also announce he will not seek the Republican nomination for President or run for President as an Independent. This now opens the way for former Senator Bob Kerry to run for the Senate seat. Kerry has expressed his intentions to run only if his long time friend, Hagel, retired. Kerry served as Senator for Nebraska from 1989 to 2001.On the Republican field, former Governor and current Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns has expressed his interest to run for the Senate seat.Hagel was first elected in 1996 and has been the most vocal Republican opponent to the Iraq war. There was early speculation Hagel will run for President as a likely Independent, but it does not seem that will occur. This makes Hagel the third Republican to announce their retirement. John Warner of Virginia and Wayne Allard of Colorado has announced they will retire. Larry Craig...

David Broder - "Bloomberg And Hagel For 2008?"
2007-08-27 18:16:00 David S. Broder's column in yesterday's Washington Post, "Bloomberg And Hagel For 2008?", is certainly worth a read.Chuck Hagel, the senator from Nebraska, describes himself as a "tidal" politician, one who believes that larger forces in society shape careers more than the ambitions of individuals. "The only mistakes I've made," he told me last week, "were when I tried to go against the tide."...Next month, Hagel will make a threshold decision -- whether to run for a third term in the Senate. He gave me no definitive answer, but my guess is that he will say that 12 years of battling the institutional lethargy of Capitol Hill will be enough. Certainly he is under no illusions about how much he can achieve as one of 100 lawmakers....The imperative the public will impose on the next president, Hagel says, "is to lead the country and restore the sense of national purpose." But the early start on campaigning for the GOP and Democratic nominations, and the prospect that the battles on ...

The bill builds on the recommendations outlined in the January 4, 2007 Wall Street Journal op-ed, A World Free of Nuclear Weapons, by George Shultz, William Perry, Henry Kissinger and Sam Nunn.It emphasizes that"securing nuclear weapons and weapons-usable material at their source is the most direct a reliable way to disrupt efforts by terrorist organizations to acquire such material.?and urges that?nuclear weapon states should reaffirm their commitment to Article VI of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty? The bill authorizes:-$50 million for an international nuclear fuel ...

Robert Novak on Hagel and Ron Paul
2007-08-15 17:11:00 Sen. Chuck Hagel, the Senate's toughest Republican critic of President Bush's war policy, has not ruled out a campaign for the GOP presidential nomination and will use the August recess of Congress to make up his mind. A major reason for the unexpectedly strong professions of support for Rep. Ron Paul's libertarian-conservative candidacy is that he is the only announced Republican presidential candidate opposed to the invasion of Iraq. Hagel as an anti-war candidate might attract a broader base of support than Paul. He has received many offers of financial support should he run. Hagel must decide what to do: run for president, run for Senate re-election, or get out of politics. The betting in the Senate Republican cloakroom is that he will retire, but Hagel has given no signal of his intentions and tells friends that he has yet to make a decision.
Hagel's no Ron Paul
2007-08-15 16:49:00 Robert Novak reported in his Aug. 5 column that because the campaign of anti-war Republican Congressman Ron Paul of Texas has been unexpectedly successful, Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska may become a presidential candidate ("Hagel for president?"). Sen. Hagel has opposed the ill-conceived Iraq war almost from the start, and if he had entered the race six months ago, he might have locked up the anti-war Republican vote. But now, after the debates and campaign coverage, it's Rep. Paul who is better known and who arguably has most of that vote locked up. More important, Hagel's positions on other issues are only a little better than those of the GOP "front-runners." Like most of his colleagues, he voted to restrict Americans' privacy and liberties, expand the welfare state and raise spending and debt to record levels. And he doesn't support ending the foreign interventions that lead to wars. Paul's supporters are not single-issue voters. We oppose the Iraq war, but we also sup...
Hagel, Dodd Introduce Bill to Revitalize America’s Infrastructure

Two weeks ago, an 83-year-old steam pipe burst in midtown Manhattan, releasing asbestos laden particles and causing widespread damage. Media reports have also recently questioned whether contaminated drinking water near Camp Lejeune i...
The latest on Hagel in New Hampsire
2007-08-10 23:58:00 The Concord Monitor ran a piece on Hagel this week. The nation's increasing frustration with the war has given Sen. Chuck Hagel - the loudest Republican critic of the war in the Senate - renewed hope in a possible presidential run. He told The New York Times recently that a few major fundraisers were urging him to run. He said: "There is no Republican presidential candidate with this point of view. There might be an opening for me on this." We checked in with state Sen. Bob Odell, a Lempster Republican who's been friends with Hagel for 30 years.... Odell said he thinks Hagel's position has increasing resonance. "I certainly think the public is open to a new voice, a new approach," he said.
Hagel and Infrastructure
2007-08-06 20:00:00 Senator Hagel made the news last week by calling for a new way to keep our infrastructure healthy, and it came just before the Minneapolis bridge collapse.Hardblogger has a piece on the plan (you can see video of Senators Hagel and Dodd on Hardball here) and here is an excerpt:Earlier on Wednesday ? a few hours before the 35W bridge in Minnesota collapsed -- Senators Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) and Chuck Hagel R-Neb.) introduced legislation to fix America?s road, bridges, water, and transit systems. According to the senators, the National Infrastructure Bank Act of 2007 would help revitalize America?s infrastructure....?We have the capacity to do it,? said Sen. Hagel. ?We have the greatest economy, system, nation, people in the world. There is no challenge this country has ever failed at meeting.? (Rumors continue that Hagel may run for president as well).NPR has an interview with Chuck Hagel on the matter as well. You can listen to it here.

Update on Webb/Hagel Amendment
2007-07-11 20:28:00 Do Chuck Hagel and Jim Webb care about our troops? Most definitely. Disgustingly, this country doesn't have 52 other Senators who feel the same. If you are in Iraq or know someone who is, realize that this amendment looked out for our soldiers without commenting on the war. It was designed to protect our men, women, children, and national security, yet 41 Senators decided it wasn't worthwhile, of course, including Joe Lieberman. D-i-s-g-u-s-t-i-n-g!
