2008-04-06 19:57:00 Country singer Merle Haggard turns 71 today. I had the pleasure of seeing him open for Bob Dylan in 2005, and he was a blast to watch. I wasn't too familiar with his music before that, but I knew who he was. Since then I've gotten into his music quite a bit and find him to be one of the greats in country music, and vastly underrated. Here is the show I was at, it's obviously hard to convey the enjoyment of the show without actually being there, but I think it's still a lot of fun to listen to. Haggard is is the founding pastor of the New Life Church in Colorado Springs, Colorado; a founder of the Association of Life-Giving Churches; and was leader of the National Association of Evangelicals from 2003 until November 2006. Back in November 2006, he had to leave his leadership positions after accusations of homosexual sex and drug abuse were made by Mike Jones, a former male prostitute. Initially Haggard denied even knowing Mike Jones, but as a media investigation proceeded he acknowledged that some allegations, such as his purchase of methamphetamine, were true.
