Down With The (New) UN
2008-08-08 09:02:00
In the comments section, a critical commenter (Yeah, we allow 'em to a point) asks: Is the UN a neoconservative arm in the US with connections with Zionism? To which Lafayette Sennacherib responds:Well... broadly speaking, yes!Indeed, LS is correct, this is exactly what the UN has morphed into since the horrific browbeating it got by Bush and his super-creepy allies in 2003. I guess they responded to all of Bush's threats by just knuckling under and deciding to become the armed wing of Western imperialism. Well, in that case, echoing the ultra-right, I say the Hell with the UN.I actually supported the Iraqi guerrillas car bombing of the UN building in Baghdad. I could not believe that the UN endorsed the US imperial and colonial invasion and occupation of Iraq!In Haiti, the UN endorsed an armed coup by the US, Canada and France that took out a democratically elected and very popular leader (92% support), Aristide! The US basically invaded Haiti with Steele Corporation mercenaries (...

What To See On Your Holidays To Haiti
2008-04-27 07:00:00
A French and Creole speaking land, Haiti is located in the Greater Antilles Archipelago, right on the Caribbean islands. BOLIVIA: What are we doing in Haiti?
2008-04-25 09:53:00
by Bolivia Rising (Pablo Stefanoni) La Paz - In recent days the Haitians have gone into the streets to protest against the brutal increase in the cost of food. The response of the Police — with the support of the United Nations Mission for the Stabilization of Haiti (MINUSTAH) — was repression that cost the life of at least five demonstrators and wounded about fifty others. Haiti is not only the poorest nation in Latin America, it was the first country in America to declare its independence under the leadership of a heroic slave rebellion. But its economy was ruthlessly pillaged by the long-lasting dictatorship of the Duvaliers (1957-1986), first the father then his son, supported by France and the United States. In 1991, the former priest and popular leader Jean-Bertrand Aristide was elected president. But after an initial overthrow and his return to power — now much further from his initial progressive positions — he was overthrown and kidnapped by a military coup ...
Hunger Plagues Haiti and the World

Haiti?s poor resort to eating mud
2008-04-14 05:58:00
It was lunchtime in one of Haiti's worst slums and Charlene Dumas was eating mud. With food prices rising, Haiti's poorest can't afford even a daily plate of rice, and some take desperate measures to fill their bellies. Charlene, 16 with a 1-month-old son, has come to rely on a traditional Haitian remedy for hunger pangs: cookies made of dried yellow dirt from the country's central plateau.

News: Current price of a slave? $50 and a plane ticket to Haiti.
2008-03-23 18:42:00
With $50 and a plane ticket to Haiti, one can buy a slave. That is one of the findings of Benjamin Skinner while researching his book, "A Crime So Monstrous: Face-to-Face with Modern-Day Slavery."As the definition of "slave" is still "a human being forced to work under threat of violence for no pay beyond sustenance", Skinner concluded there are more slaves on the planet today than at any time in human history... Even though slavery is now illegal throughout the world. There is one difference, though: slaves got cheaper. After adjusting for inflation, Skinner found that, "A slave sold in 1850, would not roughly cost $30,000 to $40,000. Today you can go to Haiti and buy a 9-year-old girl as a sex slave for $50. The devaluation of human life is incredibly pronounced."In the fall of 2005, he visited Haiti, which has one of the highest concentrations of slaves anywhere in the world. "I pulled up in a car and rolled down the window," he recalls. "Someone said, 'Do you want to get a perso...

Haiti's Citadelle - the Eighth Wonder of the World
2008-02-18 15:59:00
Still standing as the largest fortress in the Western Hemisphere, it?s been called the ?Eight Wonder of the World? many times, and it calls Haiti home. Built in the early 1800s, The Citadelle is a fortress of thirteen-foot (four metres) thick walls, some reaching 130 ft (40 metres) in height.According to UNESCO, ?When the new (Haitian) republic came into being in 1804, the principal leader of the Haitian revolution, Jean-Jacques Dessalines, ordered General Henry Christophe, who would later become king, to build the gigantic fortress, whose construction engaged some 20,000 men?. Other sources claim that Christophe himself ordered the construction ? having seized power in 1806, and crowning himself King Henri I in 1811 ? after the historic Haitian revolution, which saw Haiti gaining its independence from France in 1804. The aim was to defend Haiti against France attempting to regain control of it, as well as other invaders. Built with the architectural guidance of two Frenchmen, up to...

News: Sometimes I Am Ashamed to Work for the UN.
2008-02-11 17:09:00
I am pissed off. Two articles were published in the last days that make me ashamed to work for the UN.Before we start, let me make something clear: The "UN" is one "brand" consisting of several parts which have completely different goals, operational practices and funding mechanisms. In fear of over-simplifying, I would distinguish three main parts in the UN:"The Political Side", UN secretariat in New York and UN security council, are probably the UN's most visible side. In this large forum "where world issues are debated and decided upon", every nation has its vote and voice. The critics would say "all equal, but some have a bigger vote and a louder voice than others".This side of the UN is funded through direct contributions by the UN member countries, and as such by the taxes citizens like you and me pay."The Peace Keeping Side", codenamed "UNDPKO", are the famous blue helmet-ed forces we see on TV. Stationed in conflict zones like Sudan, Eritrea, DRC etc... they often work hand...

UFOs over Haiti: It’s FAKE video
2007-12-20 06:13:00
Two UFOs over Haiti is creating a lot of buzz. People in message boards etc asking desperately if it’s true, if they have the vids etc. Let me tell you, this whole story of UFOs over Haiti is FAKE and FALSE. It seems some lazy crooked bone has outsourced the concept cheaply from some offshore country and planted saucer like stuff amidst the palm trees which all look so innocently similar. (Thats what the video guy is saying, its difficult to understand why and how is discovering the mystrey out there). No wonder the CGI is also is fake. The video may be fake, but certainly its cool stuff.  Didn’t we see people scream a like mad bark dog whenever they see something like that on the sky? Here, so picturesquely at sunset, not one but two UFOs flew so low and people shooting the video just kept quiet. It’s impossible. Also, some wonder how could real UFOs be so close to the ground....  UFO in Bangalore to fix a deal on outsourcing?? ...

Bahamas: Trade with Haiti and Bahamian Investors
2007-11-18 04:30:00
Trade with Haiti Promising: By Paige Ferguson - Nassau, Bahamas: Haiti has long been assumed to have a desolate economy with little promise, but some Bahamian businesses have already expressed interest in the rejuvenating economy. Past president of The Bahamas Chamber of Commerce, Winston Rolle, said since the Chamber’s mission to Haiti last month, there have been several promising consequences. "I know for a fact that since our visit to Haiti a number of individuals have come into the chamber or have called the chamber looking to make contact with persons in Haiti to do business," he told The Bahama Journal. "And we’ve facilitated that by putting them in contact with the various persons or organizations in Haiti." The Chamber of Commerce’s four-day trade mission to Haiti in October was aimed at dispelling the myth that Haiti is an unsafe place to do business. The focus was also on exploring avenues for developing trade agreements between Haiti and The Bahamas in agric...
