Harvard study shows positive impacts of Muslim hajj
2008-05-05 06:39:00 From Middle East Online : Study finds that Muslim pilgrimage experience promotes peace, harmony, women's rights. HARVARD, Massachusetts ? A study on the longer-term effect of participating in the Islamic pilgrimage found that Muslims communities have become more open in many ways after the Hajj experience. The study, published by Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, says that hajj ? Muslim pilgrimage - urges equality and harmony. "It increases belief in equality and harmony among ethnic groups and Islamic sects and leads to more favorable attitudes toward women, including greater acceptance of female education and employment," the study found. Entitled 'Estimating the Impact of the Haj: Religion and Tolerance in Islam's Global Gathering', the study also found that the hajj experience promotes peaceful coexistence. "Increased unity within the Islamic world is not accompanied by antipathy toward non-Muslims," stressed the Harvard study, adding that "Hajjis...

Guantanamo Bay: Sami Al-Hajj
2008-03-15 12:06:00 Is it just me, or is anyone else a little confused as to why the Guantanamo Bay detention camp in Cuba is referred to as Gitmo? Shouldn't it be Gutmo, Gatmo or even Gtomo? I woke up this morning with this question on my mind so I have evidently been blogging/subbing too much recently.Anyway, I can only assume that Gitmo is a play on the word 'git', considering some of the stories that have emerged regarding the treatment of prisoners. Not wanting to make (too much) light of a serious issue, I'd like to direct you to to the website Prisoner 345. This focuses on the plight of Al Jazeera cameraman Sami Al-Hajj (pictured), who is being held as an 'enemy combatant' at Guantanamo and who has been on hunger strike for more than a year now.He is the only journalist currently 'detained' at Gitmo but that is still one too many, and I find his story shocking.

2008-01-16 12:44:00 Islamic Revolution Leader Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei appreciated the Iranian functionaries in charge of the Hajj ceremonies for their good performance in this year's edition of the Islamic rituals.Ayatollah Khamenei urged a group of the senior officials in charge of organizing the grand rituals Tuesday that the Hajj ceremonies would turn into a rewarding opportunity to present the Islamic values and the revolution provided they keep on cultural programs by using any potentials at hand.Ayatollah Khamenei reminded the audience there are high potentials in the Hajj ceremonies to administer spiritual and cultural activities, adding that the dormant potentials would bloom if due planning was applied.Ayatollah Khamenei summed up the items of a due planning as broader exchanges with top scholars in Howzeh (faculties of Islamic studies in Iran), utilization of academic boards and genius authors, establishment of a self-standing course on Hajj studies, and adaptation to taste and demand ...

Faith Based Health Initiatives: Have a Smoke Free Hajj
2008-01-09 04:39:00 President Bush is always being ridiculed for insisting that faith based organizations be given funding to combat HIV in Africa and drug use in the USA. Yet health based behavioral changes are a lot more successful if the argument is based on people’s own value system. America’s elite tend to revere physical health, but this doesn’t always translate to other cultures, where “behala na” applies to sickness. I mean, why tell an African that he might die of lung cancer at age 60 when he’ll probably die before then of HIV, TB, or malaria? So how does one combat the scourge of cigarette smoking, a habit that is not socially destructive like excess alcohol or promiscuity, but one that causes 4 million deaths a year world wide? One answer for the WHO (World Health Organization) is to encourage non smoking in those who follow Islam: and one step to do this is to make the Hajj smoke free. Tobacco products have been banned for sale in the holy cities of Mec...
Diary from Hajj Retreat | how it feels to step into a sufi group?
2008-01-02 13:28:00 . the pilgrimage .Following some interesting "synchronicities" (on 18 dec 2007) when i finally found myself sitting at the car heading for the hajj retreat at Shadhiliyya Sufi Center in the heart of Napa Valley and spiraling our way to the hill top (where the sufi center is), everything including the narrow paths on the valley, the nature and the land was pregnant with symbolism of a pilgrimage. Interestingly it was the Hajj Retreat coinciding with Eid and Hajj is the sacred pilgrimage. The sister with me, who has been to the firm before already declared her feelings while we were entering the Napa Valley. "It feels coming back to home"; she was feeling her homecoming as she has also been attracted to be in the presence of the teacher. And when we reached Shadhiliyya land at the evening twilight, we saw our beloved teacher sitting there in his familiar appearance. It was such a blessing to see him again, to be near him.. meeting pure hearts .When i first saw the people from Shadhiliy...
Hajj - The Pilgrimage.
2007-12-24 18:33:00 Hajj - The Pilgrimage.About more than 2 million Muslims from various countries visited the holy city of Mecca to make the spiritual pilgrimage known as The Hajj this year. (Image credit: Fishki). The Hajj that is pilgrimage to Mecca (Makkah), is the largest annual pilgrimage in the world. It is the fifth pillar of Islam, an obligation that must be carried out at least once in their lifetime by every able-bodied Muslim who can afford to do so. It is a demonstration of the solidarity of the Muslim people, and their submission to God. The pilgrimage occurs from the 8th to the 12th day of Dhul Hijjah, the 12th month of the Islamic calendar. Because the Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar, the event cannot be pegged to the Gregorian calendar, whose (solar) year is eleven days longer. In 2007, Hajj took place from December 17 to December 21.Other Posts:Rock Balancing.A Symphony Of Lights.Creative Business Cards.Print Ads Using Illusions.Outdoor Advertising: Signboards & Billboards.

Who killed El-Hajj??
2007-12-21 13:03:00 Who really was behind the blast which killed General François El-Hajj ?? This terrorist act for sure will be included in the Lebanese Murder X-files , and it is one hell of a long archives of Blasts for sure . Who was behind it will be the ultimate question with no official answer ,just like the rest of the blasts and assassination in Lebanon. Yet the death of the man who could have been the commander of the Lebanese army should not be closed immediately or to be forgotten easily because it did not only throw its dark shadow on the Lebanese Presidential election issue but it may throw to its dark shadow on even further like that. If you want to know or think about the Ultimate Question on Whom killed El-Hajj , you start first like any good investigator to search in the man's history and to see if he got any enemies that want him to see him dead ,and of course in a country like Lebanon any political figure must haves enemies , you will tell me that he was a Christian officer in th...

How to Perform the Rituals of Hajj
2007-12-16 07:20:00 How to Perform the Rituals of Hajjby Shaikh Muhammad As-Salih Al-UthaimeenPrefacePraise be to Allah, Lord of the Universe. May peace and blessings be upon Muhammad, the last of the prophets and messengers, and upon his family and esteemed companions. Hajj is one of the best forms of worship and is one of the most sublime deeds because it is one of the pillars of Islam that Allah sent Muhammad--may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him--with. A servant's religion is incomplete without it. A form of worship is only acceptable when the following is true.? One devotes it to Allah alone, with a desire for the Hereafter. It cannot be done with the intention of being seen among people or for worldly gain.? One follows the Prophet's example, in words and deeds. This cannot be accomplished except by gaining knowledge of the Sunnah.Forms of PilgrimageThere are three forms of Hajj: Tamattu'- Ifraad - QiranTamattu': A pilgrim wears Ihram for Umrah only during the months of Hajj, whic...
Hajj stories around the world | the spiritual journey of life time
2007-12-14 21:17:00 Following the footstep of Abraham, the father of 3 major monotheistic faith, the sacred Pilgrimage, Hajj is now in the process of start. Muslims from all over the world are taking part in the largest religious and spiritual gathering on Earth, the Hajj, or pilgrimage to Mecca. During these historic days, white, brown and black people, rich and poor, kings and peasants, men and women, old and young will all stand before God, all brothers and sisters, at the holiest of shrines in the center of the Muslim world, where all will call upon God to accept their good deeds. The Hajj resembles the re-enactment of the experiences of the Prophet Abraham, whose selfless sacrifice has no parallel in the history of humankind. This great annual convention of faith demonstrates the concept of equality of mankind, the most profound message of Islam, which allows no superiority on the basis of race, gender or social status. The only preference in the eyes of God is piety as stated in the Quran: "The be...

The Spiritual Hajj of the Heart | the esoteric dimensions of the pilgrimage
2007-12-06 08:35:00 It is known that physical worship is an imitation of what is real, and the Hajj is no exception. The reality of worship is completely different for one who has attained a higher level of understanding and sincerity compared to the common individual, and it is for this reason that Prophet Muhammad said that although two individuals may pray beside one another and superficially appear not unlike one another, yet the difference between their prayers is as the difference between the heavens and the earth. The reality of worship is known to the soul, and he who is close, or in union as Awliya are, to his soul will find infinitely greater depth in his worship. All souls are by divine will in a state of Islam and in perfect surrender to the Lord of Heavens. Thus the closer one moves towards himself, his true self, the closer he or she will come towards the identity of ?Abdullah,? an honored servant of the Divine. The journey towards Oneself is but the journey from the superficial world of il...

The Hajj Through History
2007-12-05 05:17:00 From Huda,The pilgrimage retains tradition in modern timesEach year, over 2.5 million Muslims descend in Mecca, Saudi Arabia for the annual Muslim pilgrimage, or Hajj. The largest gathering of humanity in any one time or place is the culminating spiritual experience for a Muslim, as well as a logistical challenge for the government of Saudi Arabia. The Hajj has been performed by Muslims every year for the past 14 centuries. In earlier times, the Hajj was literally the journey of a lifetime, a dream for which a person spent an entire lifetime saving up the funds. The trip itself was an arduous and difficult one, often taking months or even years on horseback or on foot, through mountain terrain and desert. Gangs of bandits often attacked the routes to Mecca to extort money from the pilgrims."And proclaim the Pilgrimage among men. They will come to thee on foot and (mounted) on every kind of camel, lean on account of journeys through deep and distant mountain highways..." (Qur'an 22:2...

2007-12-04 18:35:00 A place of pilgrimage is where the currents are flowing from the body towards the soul, where the whole atmosphere is charged; from where people have achieved samadhi (supra-conscious state of mystical union), from where people realized their enlightenment.Such places have become specially charged. Pilgrimage (Hajj)
2007-07-24 12:44:00 Once a year Muslims around the world go to Makkah (Saudi Arabia) to perform Hajj (Pilgrimage) during 9~11th day of Islamic month of Zil-Hajj. In old times people do travel from many locations around the world on foot or on animal back. As the means of travel improved people start to avail ships and after some time air-planes to reach Makkah. This year more than 159,000 people from Pakistan only shall travel to Makkah, mostly by Pakistan International Airline (PIA). This year PIA has increased the Hajj fare (may be it increases every year or so) stating that PIA is in loss. Even in India Muslim are offered much support for the Pilgrimage. Rather than giving support to Hajjis PIA try to earn from them on increased rates each year. The reason they tell that our planes return without any passenger on board from Saudi Arabia, so they have to cover extra fuel cost. Increased Umrah fares is not understandable. This situation is like a rickshaw, which carry passenger throughout the day on or...

2007-04-19 16:36:00 Georgetown, Guyana: Lance Gibbs had a cherished career for the West Indies. The off-spinner's long fingers enabled him to impart a lot of turn on the ball and helped him become the first slow bowler to get past the 300-wicket mark in Tests. The man from Queenstown, Guyana, finished with 309 wickets in 79 Tests, including 18 five-fors, all the while conceding his runs at a low 1.99 per over which would have helped him shine in One Day Internationals had he played them. Very few off-spinners can match those statistics, but Gibbs takes more pride in playing for the West Indies than those statisics. He is now involved in shipping merchandising in Miami and lives a happy life with his sons, daughter and grandchildren. Gibbs was in Guyana to watch the World Cup matches and was not amused at the West Indies team's showing. Staying at his friend's posh Digar road flat, he said he would talk on all matters except the state of the West Indies cricket -- for "that leads to despair". He s...
Harbhajan Singh, Bhajji’s Magic ball for cricket world cup 2007
2007-03-11 18:22:00 The Indian Off-spinner, Harbhajan Singh is practicing a new type of delivery for 3 months. In an Interview he told that he hasn’t used that delivery yet because he needs more practice on it. He wants to use that delivery in the World cup cricket 2007 but is afraid that it may not work and the batsman may smash it for a four or six. He also told that he is learning by watching the balls of other world class spinners like Shane Warne and Muralitharan.Harbhajan Singh is one of the two spinners selected for the world cup and may be used along with Anil Kumble. He can bowl doosra(a leg spin delivery in the action of off-spin by an off-spinner) as ICC has given permission to use doosra. But he hasn’t used that delivery quite often these days. Muthaia Muralitharan, the spin king uses doosra quite often and is successful in taking wickets. Bhajji is not in a great form these days. In the world cup he can take more wickets if he uses his doosra often. Hope that he will be able to use hi...
The Hajj Sermon
2007-01-01 10:29:02 Tags: Politics, Islam, Hajj, Unity, SocietyI ended up listening to the Hajj sermon a few days ago and a couple of points caught my attention. Speaking to the congregation of believers on Hajj day, the Saudi state-appointed Mufti claimed:...that the slogans of enlightened moderation and socialism were completely opposed to Islam and there was no place for sectarianism in the Deen. He said the cause of downfall of Muslims was distraction from their Deen and that was why the enemies of Islam were uniting against them. He added that Muslim governments should make efforts to unite against the enemies of Islam. The Mufti said that mujahideen in Afghanistan, Iraq and other parts of Muslim world should protect the rights of their brethren like they do for the House of God.So while the Mufti made some politically correct noises like emphasising the need for unity, speaking out against the terrorism perpetrated in the name of Islam and denouncing sectarianism. But for the rest of it - the pol...

Hajj and Eid Greetings to All
2006-12-31 22:28:02 Adil Najam Congratulations for the over 2 million Muslims - including the nearly 200,000 Pakistanis - who performed Hajj yesterday. To me, the Hajj is an amazing and powerful symbol of equality and unity in a world distraught with frictions and factions. It is not just a symbol of 'Muslim brotherhood' but of human oneness. It is not simply a connection - in its rituals and its meanings - amongst the Abrahamic faiths; it is also a spiritually moving and visually powerful symbol of the unity of all humankind. There are those who wish to reduce the meaning of the message to merely one religion, or even one sect. I, at least, have always found it a more universal message and moved by the symbolism of unity and harmony of all. On this day, even as one reads comments on blogs such as this, reads the newspaper, or simply tunes into television news, one finds conversations that highlight differences: between rich and poor, East and West, 'gooras' and 'kaalas', between shias and sunnis...

Saddam Hussein hanged on the eve of Hajj
2006-12-30 13:12:02 As expected, Saddam Hussein has been hanged in Iraq. The execution was slated to happen before the New Year and the former president’s late attempts to appeal the verdict were unsuccessful, with a US judge rejecting his appeal saying that Hussein was not in US custody. Hussein’s legal team had argued that he was a Prisoner of War and thus should have remained in US custody. That would annul the Iraqi court’s decision. The defense makes sense with Hussein having been captured as part of the US’ war on Hussein’s regime. Considering the flawed trial which convicted Hussein to the death, the hanging is quite contentious. Furthermore, it is something that can spur violence with parts of Iraq still behind the former president. The execution comes on the eve of the Hajj holiday, and this may be intentional, with officials possibly hoping that Hajj will subdue potential violence.

Hajj experiences and reflections
2006-12-30 09:52:02 Brother Dara O. Shayda, who has the website Untired with Loving in which he translates many Sufi texts never before seen in English, and moderates The Sufi Notes yahoo group, has been sending the group his reflections on Hajj (the sacred pilgrimage) and Mecca, where he decided to stay for some time. Here are his words, for those that have ears. (via Darvish's blog)[1.] A few nights ago I was making Tawaaf (Circumambulating) around the Ka'ba and was wondering how many more times I will circle here and see nothing! I see men jumping around and screaming Arabic words and yet I am sure our manly voices do not reach to Allah.I was dragging my feet and reached the beginning of the circle, where the Black Stone is located. We usually raise our hands and kiss our palms since we cannot reach the Black Stone directly, due to the large crowd present in the Haram. Just before I could raise my hand to wave at the Black Stone, I saw a svelte Indian girl stop and place her feet together, and w...
