To own or to rent? What would Hamlet do?
2008-05-11 00:50:00 Originally, I titled this post, "To own or to rent? That is the question." But that sounded far too cliché. So I modified the reference just a bit. Too cheesy? Or too opaque? Anyway, there was an interesting post on Zillow the other day about how to decide whether to rent or to buy a home. Now that the real estate market is down in so many areas, it is a good time to buy, but buyers are understandably jittery: "Is this really the bottom?" they ask. "Will it be a good investment?" "Will I lose my money and end up in foreclosure like some people who bought three years ago?" The answers are: Yes, at least close; Absolutely, over the long term; and Not if buying a home fits within your budget and lifestyle considerations. Okay, that last question is more difficult to answer. How do you decide whether renting or buying makes more sense? To really get at a good answer, you have to consider a few factors: 1. Could you afford to ...

Grave Diggers Scene in 'Hamlet'
2008-03-21 14:41:00 The Grave diggers scene (Act V, sc. i) in ‘Hamlet’ has been frequently called as a definitive final scene in Hamlet’s journey. According to F.T. Prince, it is the scene in which Hamlet finds his way after stumbling through a jungle of emotions. The grave digger scene is divided into two parts; in the first part, Hamlet contemplates the morality of man as he watches the human skull being tossed from their sleepy graves by the grave diggers. The entry of Hamlet marks the second part of the scene. He exits his feigned madness when he is stared into the face by the reality of the death of Ophelia.Having escaped death at the hands of robbers and from the King’s conspiracy to eliminate him Hamlet comes back an enlightened man. Part of his enlightenment comes from the fact that Hamlet is not bothered about his delay any more. He has understood that time past and time future are but the manifestations of the time present. He has realized the ultimate meaning of his destiny. The scene...

Importance of Opening Scene of 'Hamlet'
2008-03-11 16:50:00 As always, Shakespeare opens his tragedy with minor characters, who supply information about – the prevailing situation and the characters. It is revealed that the state of Denmark is in a state of chaos and disorder. This disorder has been prevailing due to the political event of the death of elder Hamlet and also the preparations that are going on in the state against Norway. Then there is a private event – the disturbed state of mind of the Prince because of political and personal reasons. This sets the stage for the unfolding of the events. The scene also brings the audience face to face with the supernatural. The audience gets curious to know about the ‘why’ of the ghost and reason for the political chaos. It becomes apparent that Horatio is deeply attached to the Prince and would go to any lengths to protect him. Horatio appears before us as a man who has been torn apart by the sorrow of the Prince.

Hrithik Roshan In Onir's Hamlet
2007-10-19 12:45:00 Hrithik Roshan may have been roped in for a Desi Hamlet if rumors are to be believed. Onir, director of My Brother Nikhil, and Serendipity Films (Ambika Hinduja and Dinesh Vijan), producers of Being Cyrus. Bhavani Iyer, writer of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Black are all coming together to make a Bollywood adaptation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet.Onir is clear that he wants to set his Hamlet in contemporary India - either Mumbai or Delhi. “With a modern family, capturing the essence of the drama,” he adds pointing out that Maqbool and Othello had a rural grunge feel which he doesn’t relate to. “The script will need lots of work and development, but I have the idea of fusing magic realism with Shakespeare’s idiom. Though I am not writing the script, I will be closely involved.”That leaves the exciting prospect of casting for parts like Hamlet, Polonius and Ophelia. “I need fantastic actors with the right faces. Like I need an Ophelia with i...

Hamlet Part 5 – The Illusory Nature of the World (3)
2007-08-23 15:06:00 In recent posts I have been looking at the disparity between appearances and realities as an important theme in Hamlet and, increasingly, in the world we live in. I suppose one could argue that governments have always used propaganda and various media to convey a perspective that they want their citizens to share, but I can’t help but think there is something much different about what is going on today. It seems to me that all kinds of policies are being enacted and promoted that have little concern with the common good, so that the lies currently being propagated have, in many instances, become vehicles for promoting hatred, evil, suspicion and paranoia. Certainly these are not results that strengthen society. People deserve, and are entitled to, much better. The most obvious illustrations of this revolve around the American-initiated ‘war on terror,’ a war which, as in the one depicted in Orwell’s 1984, will seemingly have no end. Ever since that horrifying attack on th...
Hamlet Part 4 – The Illusory Nature of the World - Manipulative Political
2007-08-21 14:03:00 Last day I discussed how the Canadian political establishment, like Claudius in Hamlet, shows little respect for the citizens. I’d like to continue with this idea in today’s post before going on to examine some American examples tomorrow. The current Conservative government, led by Stephen Harper, promised in the last election to establish a regime that stresses transparency and accountability. That promise has proven to be just the usual political rhetoric one expects from today’s caliber of politician, in other words, just another illusion of respect for the people. The most recent and egregious example of this is the fact that Harper and his cronies tried, on the claim of national security, to keep secret blacked out parts of the O’Connor commission of inquiry into the Maher Arar false imprisonmentand torture debacle. It turns out that the reason given, national security, was a lie; the actual reason was the report was embarrassing to Canadian and American security offi...
Hamlet – Part 3 – The Illusory Nature of the World (1)
2007-08-20 14:12:00 In my last post I talked about Hamlet as a story of the transition from childhood to adulthood. Today I’d like to discuss how a related theme, the disparity between appearance and reality, is relevant to our lives today.Almost from the play’s outset, Hamlet discovers that the world he thought he knew was more of an illusion than a reality. First comes the discovery of his mother’s seeming fecklessness in hastily marrying her brother-in-law Claudius, a union considered incestuous at the time. As things progress, Hamlet learns about other types of betrayal. The woman he loves, Ophelia, rejects him at her father’s behest, and two childhood friends, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, essentially spy on him to curry favor with Claudius, who wants to know why Hamlet has been acting so strangely. Ultimately, the Prince is able to ascertain that Claudius did commit fratricide, as claimed by the ghost early in the play, and therefore is a usurper. All of these discoveries send the y...
Hamlet – Part 2 – From Childhood to Maturity
2007-08-17 13:43:00 In the last post I gave a brief synopsis of the play. Now I would like to begin addressing its importance for us.In many respects, Prince Hamlet is the most human character I have ever encountered in literature. Although of royal lineage, he is in many respects an everyman who is called upon to respond to a world I think he would prefer to ignore; just as we have little choice in our engagement with the world as we mature, neither does Hamlet.Although the play begins less than two months after the death of his father, there is much to suggest Hamlet had a rather idealized, innocent life prior to that traumatic event. We can infer this from the shock and despair permeating his first soliloquy in which the melancholy Dane says, “O that this too too solid flesh would melt/ Thaw, and resolve itself into a dew!" “In other words, he wishes he were dead. But his disaffection and disappointment with the world goes deeper: “Or that the Everlasting had not fixed / His canon ‘gains...
Great Books and What They Have To Teach Us – Hamlet – Part 1
2007-08-16 14:41:00 The following post is much briefer than I had originally intended, the reason being that I love the play so much that I want to take extra care in writing about itEvery semester that I taught a senior English class, I made certain to leave one book to the end, Shakespeare’s Hamlet. It wasn’t that I dreaded teaching the play – quite the opposite. But my enthusiasm for the work meant that if I taught it at any other point, I would spend far too long on it. It is that rich a tragedy. Very briefly, the plot of Hamlet revolves around the assertion by a ghost that he is the spirit of the late King Hamlet. He reveals to King Hamlet’s son, Prince Hamlet, that he was murdered by Claudius, the King’s brother, the man who has now claimed the throne and married the late Hamlet’s widow, Gertrude. Additionally, the ghost suggests that Claudius and Gertrude were carrying on a relationship while the king was still alive. His purpose in appearing to Prince Hamlet? He asks the lad...

2007-07-18 05:09:00 Hamlet, escrita por William Shakespeare entre 1600 y 1602. Se trata una de las más grandes tragedias en la historia del teatro y de las más representadas en todo el mundo. The Sopranos and Hamlet
2007-06-21 21:02:00 "And the rest is silence" - the famous, many-sided ambiguous last line of Hamlet. The "rest" could mean respite, sleep, or remainder. The "silence" could mean quiet or death. Is the remainder - what comes after the story of Hamlet - just a time-out, or a death of everything we have seen? When Horatio says this about the bodies he finds on the floor - which we presumably know are dead - what is he telling us about what happens after? As I was reading Dick Cavett's excellent piece written before The Sopranos' finale, I realized that, in addition to The Lady, or the Tiger echoes, The Sopranos also partakes of Hamlet.I'm sure I'm not the first person to make that connection - just as I was not the only person to call forth The Lady, or The Tiger - but I thought it useful to record it here."And the rest is silence" has been praised by I. A. Richards and other literary critics as the ideal ambiguous ending. Like The Lady or the Tiger, it is a triumph of written language. In the cas...
