Henry Aaron--a Baseball Player Worth Honoring
2008-05-20 21:07:00 Last Saturday, Henry "Hank" Aaron (BaseballLibrary.com, Wikipedia, Biography.com) delivered a commencement address at Concordia University. This was only the second commencement address he could remember giving--the other was at Harvard University. When asked by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel why he had decided to give an address at Concordia University, he replied, "It is Wisconsin. It is Milwaukee. It gives me a chance to see a lot of my friends. My attachment to Milwaukee and Wisconsin is always something that will be in my heart."Hank Aaron has a long history of playing baseball in Wisconsin: he played for both the Eau Claire Bears (Wikipedia) and the Milwaukee Brewers. During his long career in Major League Baseball, Hank Aaron went on to become the player to hit the most homeruns--755. Barry Bonds has since broken that record. But, I tend to agree with Hank--last Saturday he said, "I still consider myself the home-run king."In 6th grade, I read Hank Aaron's Autobiography: I H...

Hank Aaron: 34 Years Since 715
2008-04-08 13:12:00 When I was in second grade, I did a book report about Hank Aaron. I told my class about his 715th home run, hit on April 8, 1974, off Los Angeles Dodger pitcher Al Downing. I gave a statistical rundown of this great player, and knowing me, I'm sure I drew an "in action" picture of Hammerin'

2008-03-29 02:06:00 Major League Baseball needs to find ways to address the declining interest among young blacks, panelists on a round-table discussion associated with this weekend’s Civil Rights Game said Friday. Barry Bonds 762, Hank Aaron 755, Babe Ruth 714, Cruise-Goebbels 759
2008-01-21 15:15:00 Coming dangerously close to beating Barry Bonds current record of 762 lifetime home runs, Tom Cruise was compared to Joseph Goebbels for the 759th time in Germany over the weekend. ?The heat is definitely on now,? said a spokesman for the German Protestant (as in Lutheran) church. ?We?ve compared Scientologist Cruise to Goebbels so many times that we ...
2007 in Review, pt. 4: The agony of defeat?
2007-12-28 17:21:00 Hi, and welcome to day four of our 2007 review. Today’s topic - the year in sports. And what a year it was - great competition, exciting on-field action, outstanding team accomplishments, and all of it trumped by off-field drama. Barry B*nds: The real homerun king is Hank Aaron, and don’t you forget it. It wasn’t a pretty summer in sports, and the ugliest of the ugly was this roided-up icon of arrogance and entitlement. He may go to jail and he may not, but rest assured, nobody is ever going to write a Field of Dreams-style epic about him. Let this be a lesson, kids - flaxseed oil is for losers. In other news, some of Barry B*nds supporters called our anti-Barry hatred racism. Hank Aaron was reportedly stunned to learn that he’s been white all these years. All About A-Rod: AAA-Rod set a new Major League record for Bush League plays. He finally decideed that he belongs in a Yankee uniform. We couldn’t agree more. Floyd Landis: Stripped of his Tour de Fra...
Hank Aaron is American's Home Run Champion -- Statistically Speaking
2007-11-29 13:15:00 Sadaharu Oh, as most baseball fans know, holds the world record for most home runs by a professional baseball player, with 868. Hank Aaron fans (and now, the three Barry Bonds fans) take issue with that number, as at best, Japanese pro baseball is, at best, at the quality of the American (plus

HANK AARON IS COOL WITH BARRY BONDS
2007-10-29 08:23:00 When Barry Bonds was chasing Hank Aaron’s record of 755 home runs, Mr. Aaron kept his distance. Many people alleged that they knew what was going through Hank’s mind at the time. It was some variation of “Hank is making his stand against Barry Bonds and Barry’s steroid use”. According to Hammerin’ Hank, that wasn’t ...

A Historic Blast --
2007-08-08 17:20:00 Barry Bonds is the new home run king. While his record chase was and will forever be swarmed in controversy, his 756 home runs are not up for opinion or debate. They are fact. And while many can not or will not accept him as legitimately breaking the record, he currently stands alone as the all-time home run leader. Baseball holds more value to their statistics and records than any other sport, and chiefly among those, is the home run record. It is arguably the most sacred record in all of sports, and now the holder of that record, is arguably sports most polarizing figure. Whether it?d be because of his race, or the opinions of him being a poor human being, the fact is that even if it?s never proven that he took performance enhancing drugs, he?ll always be viewed as a cheater. Yet for as phony as some will claim many of his home runs are because of his alleged steroid use, those around the game have acted and reacted equally as phony. For nearly a year, when it became app...

Taking the Notorious Ph.D. to School!
2007-08-08 07:48:00 You'd think that someone who posts about once every two months would have a bunch of sweet post titles just waiting to see the light of day, right? Guess not.Todd Boyd writes for ESPN.com and, like Scoop Jackson, loves to use obscure hip-hop references to obfuscate the points of his columns. The reading experience is akin to an aptitude test: are you current enough to keep up with all the references? If so, congratulations, you may be able to parse this column and understand what Todd Boyd is trying to say. It's like being a member of an exclusive club, or knowing a secret language that only Todd and Scoop and maybe DJ Khaled truly understand.Don't know DJ Khaled? Well, looks like you're going to have to enjoy this post a little less than everyone else. Anyway, Todd Boyd thinks Hank Aaron should take the time to acknowledge the achievement of Barry Bonds, but remains in the shadows out of jealousy. I disagree, but let's see how Boyd arrived at that conclusion. **EDIT** I realiz...
Barry Bonds Breaks the All Time Home Run Record [J. Mark English]
2007-08-08 07:08:00 Call him a villain, call him a cheater, call him a product of his time...or some may even call him a hero. Whatever you call him, now you must recognize Barry Bonds as the all time home run king. Bonds went yard, causing delirium in San Francisco. You can watch the video here.Otherwise here is a write up from the AP... I'd write my thoughts now but I'm too tired from coming home from the Mets loss against the Braves to write anything profound....This is from Janie McCauley of the San Francisco Chronicle:Barry Bonds hit No. 756 to the deepest part of the ballpark Tuesday night, and hammered home the point: Like him or not, legitimate or not, he is baseball's new home run king. Bonds broke Hank Aaron's storied record in the fifth inning, connecting on a 3-2 pitch from Washington's Mike Bacsik. Three days earlier, Bonds tied the Hammer with a shot to left-center in San Diego. "Thank you very much. I got to thank all of you, all the fans here in San Francisco. It's been fantasti...

The Heroic Anti-Hero?
2007-07-20 18:05:00 Bad sportswriters habitually concoct shocking, counterintuitive topics for their columns, hoping that the very idiocy of their ideas will attract readers who want to verify for themselves whether or not said authors could really be that stupid--a reaction somewhat akin to rubber-necking a gruesome car crash. The fact that these guys keep their jobs year after year leads me to believe that the tactic does attract readers; I, for one, am drawn inexorably to these columns, though that could just be because I write for a blog devoted to them. On second thought, it's far more likely that I write for this blog because I'm so drawn to them. But although these columns may increase the audience and fame of their authors, the inescapable fact remains that they're still utterly ludicrous. To illustrate this phenomenon, I present you withe the latest from Philadelphia Daily News' Sam Donnellon. Here's the headline:Thanks, Barry, for Being Baseball's SaviorSam Donnellon said what? Oh, I ha...
Bonds Inches Closer to Aaron [David Stefanini]
2007-07-19 23:30:00 Barry Bonds hit is 752 and 753 home runs of his career today against the Cubs. These two swings left him only 2 home runs behind the most prestigious record in sports. The question now becomes where is he going to break the record? His next series is in Milwaukee. Yes, the home of Bud Selig. I feel they should sit Barry and let him break the record in front of his home fans. The things this man has had to go through is very difficult to comprehend. Imagine waking up and being one of the most hated men in sports. Luckily for Bonds, Michael Vick has become the most hated athlete in the world.I am one who thinks we should just let Barry play and celebrate his amazing accomplishment. http://img68.imageshack.us/my.p-hp?image=amerlegendslogo5wj.gif-

Jennie Finch and Eric Karrabell Belong Together
2007-07-16 15:50:00 I think we're all familiar with the fact that softball player Jennie Finch is a babe. She also seems like a pretty cool person judging from her stint on "This Week in Baseball" a couple years ago, and the fact that she and husband Casey Daigle (of the Diamondbacks AAA team), named their son Ace. Let's face it, that would be a cool name to have. However, this year, Jennnie took a gig at espn.com writing a column once a week called The Finch Files, in which readers write in ask her questions. It's not that she's been bad at it. From time to time, she offers interesting perspectives (aside from the weekly updates about her life). It's just that she's kinda ... obvious. To wit:- "At this point, if you can trade Zito, then trade him. His fastball is topping out in the mid-80s and he just doesn't look like the same pitcher who won the Cy Young a few years ago."- "It wouldn't surprise me to see (Barry Bonds) finish the year strong once the pressure of chasing Hank Aaron is off."- "C...

Track. Wall. Gone! --
2007-07-03 21:11:00 Barry Bonds is about to make history, as he is just five home runs away from tying Hang Aaron's record of 755. Unless you live under a rock, you know that Bonds, as well as Major League Baseball, are under heavy criticism because of the role that steroids might have played in the home run chase. This week, Barry was voted to start in the upcoming All-Star game which happens to be in San Francisco's AT&T park, Barry's home ball park. You have to wonder that now that the fans have spoken and are seemingly ready for Barry to break the record, what MLB's stance will be when he in fact hits 755. There has been a heavy debate on whether they should celebrate the event, or turn a blind eye to it. Will Bud Selig show up or wont he? Will Barry be cheered or booed? Will they have an asterisk by his name in the record books?Hank Aaron has already come out and said that he's not going to be there when he drops to number 2 in the record ...

MLB Credits Hank Aaron With 50 Lost Home Runs
2007-04-29 19:40:00 Share on StumbleUpon: MILWAUKEE—In what Major League Baseball officials are calling a "long overdue correction of a gross oversight," Commissioner Bud Selig announced Tuesday the discovery that Hall of Famer Hank Aaron had in fact accumulated 50 previously unaccounted-for home runs during his illustrious 22-year baseball career, bringing his once record total of 755 to an even higher 805 and putting the all-time home-run record perhaps forever out of reach."Hank Aaron is a hero, an excellent man, and a great ambassador for the game of baseball," Selig said during a press conference to announce the findings. "We're proud to have finally set things right, hopefully once and for all. And I have to tell you, some of the home runs that we discovered were just monster shots. One was hit off of [Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher] Harvey Haddix that went 576 feet, and Hank wasn't even that big of a guy.
