Hank Steinbrenner wants Cashman back
2008-06-07 13:35:00
Having spent the past few days with him at the first-year player draft in Florida, Hank Steinbrenner has informed Brian Cashman he wants him to return next season as GM of the Yankees the New York Daily News reported. The organization's co-chairman said the sides are "a ways away" from announcing a contract extension, adding "there's a good chance" such an agreement will not be done until after the 2008 season. "I told him we want him back and he wants to come back, but he'll take some time to talk it over with his family," Steinbrenner said Friday. "I feel comfortable with leaving the baseball end of it in his hands. But I also told him he has to make up his mind on what he wants to do. Obviously, nobody's irreplaceable. "But we want him to stay. I want to make that clear."

Hank Steinbrenner expects his struggling New York Yankees to focus and turn around their season. “They’ve got to play smarter and harder,” he said Wednesday. “The injuries — when you’re missing Alex Rodriguez and Jorge Posada, that makes it tough. The injuries make a huge difference. At the same time, you’ve got to get it ...
How the Yankees Became the Red Sox
2008-05-04 03:26:00
The Red Sox' championship turn over the last few seasons has caused some unforeseen side effects. The formerly loveable loser Boston Red Sox have become the new Evil Empire. Their fans, who used to be looked upon with pity, are now looked upon with annoyance as they fill every ballpark the Red Sox visit. The "pink hat" Red Sox fans are another phenomenon altogether. I'm not sure what to think of this group, but I'm pretty sure they didn't exist before 2004 (at least in large numbers). Red Sox fans, a group that I am relatively proud to have spent my entire life a part of, are completely out of control ? and deservedly so, considering everything we went through prior to 2004. But those side effects can be expected. What started happening in New York the day the Red Sox came back from 0-3 in 2004 was completely unexpected.Click here for the rest of the article...

Baseball Notebook; Hank Steinbrenner Like Father George
2008-04-22 14:56:00
I was hoping Hank Steinbrenner would be a little milder version of his dad George, but so far, that hasn't been the case. I doubt that Joe Girardi appreciated the remarks of Hank as to how Joba Chamberlain would be used this season. That is the kind of decision that is made between the
Hank Steinbrenner a chip off the old block
2008-04-22 13:09:00
The quotes that came out of Hank Steinbrenner like exhaust out of a tail pipe were about Joba Chamberlain this time. All of a sudden Hank knows so much about Joba — who has a chance to be the first pitcher ever to be sent out to Monument Park after 30 innings in the big leagues — that you can only assume he's in a fantasy league according to Mike Lupica of the New York Daily News. It's not just Joba, either. Hank knows so much pitching now that he wants Mike Mussina to pitch more like Jamie Moyer. Why? Because he saw Moyer on television Saturday, that's why! Tim Wakefield hung in there and won for the Red Sox on Sunday. If Hank had caught that one on the dish, he might have been yelling for Mussina to start throwing knuckleballs. He doesn't sound like the owner of the Yankees, he sounds like a guy at the end of the bar sometimes. This time he was running his mouth on Joba the way Joba's fastball occasionally runs in on righthanded batters, saying that only "idiots" ...
Hank Steinbrenner: Just Shut Your Mouth Already

Ian Kennedy? Who Are the Yankees Kidding?
2008-04-05 06:45:00
If you believe the reports that surfaced during the off season, Johan Santana was an Ian Kennedy away from become a New York Yankee. Ian freaking Kennedy? Are you kidding me? The same guy who was on the wrong end of a 13-4 defeat to the mighty Tampa Bay Rays? Seventy pitches and six runs in only two-and-a-third innings from the guy you just couldn?t give up to get Johan Santana. Against the Rays. How did I not spend more time on this when it happened? The Yankees are a World Series-level offensive team relying on two rookies, two senior citizens, and an ace that hasn?t won a big game (or pitched well in a big game) since joining the Yankees. The reason why Chien-Ming Wang?s nineteen win season was ?quiet? last year is because he didn?t have a single ?loud? win. No big wins. No statement games. A few big losses, especially against the Indians in the playoffs. How can a team with a $200,000,000 payroll go into the season relying on THAT guy to be their ace? The Job...
Hank Steinbrenner May Need To Shut Up, Part II
2008-03-16 21:22:00
He's awesome for the print media, online oulets and blogs; however, he's doing himself a disservice by continuously opening his mouth. I wish the man showed some self-restraint and I would have never thought that he would turn out to perhaps be worse than his father, George.Once again, he's opened his mouth, once again firing rockets at the Boston Red Sox...From Boston.com: Jonathan Papelbon was amused yesterday by Yankee owner Hank Steinbrenner's comments in the New York Post in which he said, "being insulted by Papelbon is like being attacked by a mouse."During the good-natured back-and-forth between Steinbrenner and Sox owner John Henry a few weeks back concerning which team's brand is more recognizeable, Papelbon had told the Hartford Courant, "I don't know if he's trying to stir things up or not. I sure as hell don't care because he sure as hell hasn't stepped on a baseball field. He needs to just stick to pencil-pushing, I guess."Papelbon said in response to the mouse...
Hank Steinbrenner Makes New York Yankees Interesting Again
2008-03-16 05:03:00
I know I?ve said this on Bleacher Report before, but it bears repeating: I love Hank Steinbrenner.Hank Steinbrenner is the best thing to happened to baseball since the designated hitter (purists be damned!).Since he took over for the late George Steinbrenner (he is dead, right?), it?s been entertaining Hank quote after entertaining Hank quote.Ask Hank about Boston fans booing poor, cheating, drug user Andy Pettitte (or any of the many, many Yankee HGH and steroid users) and he responds with this beauty: "I don't think they would want to be hollering too loud at Andy up in Fenway. They had plenty of players doing this stuff, too. It's just that those players weren't mentioned in the Mitchell Report."An MLB owner implying that the Mitchell Report was incomplete and the drug problem in baseball is even worse than reported? Especially with the defending champions? Fantastic! High-five, Bud Selig! His team has a few ill-advised dust-ups with the Tampa Bay Rays during some meaningles...
The Idiot File: Hank Steinbrenner, Please Shut Up...
2008-03-16 02:33:00
Ah, good ol' Hank Steinbrenner in less than 6 or months or so of being in charge of the Yankees is now known for his mouth as much as good old dad, George. Giving his two cents on the Rays-Yankees dust-up, here's what he says...From ESPN: This time, Yankees general partner Hank Steinbrenner took up the charge, reaffirming the front office's support of manager Joe Girardi, backing the players and making a comment that clearly was directed at the small-market Rays."I don't want these teams in general to forget who subsidizes a lot of them, and it's the Yankees, the Red Sox, Dodgers, Mets," he said to The New York Post. "I would prefer if teams want to target the Yankees that they at least start giving some of that revenue sharing and luxury tax money back. From an owner's point of view, that's my point."Steinbrenner, again exhibiting his penchant for verbal jabbing, said he has been pleased by the Yankees' team-first mentality this spring, and did not want to comment on Shelle...
John Henry To Hank Steinbrenner. Sincerely Yours, Hank....

Hankie Steinbrenner must be proud on this Sunday afternoon after his Saturday mini-tirade against everything Red Sox (see two posts below). John Henry, the owner of the team I love has offered him a FREE membership to Red Sox Nation. I thought that was a gracious gesture by Mr. Henry, a gesture echoed and reverberating from northeast Maine to the city of Tokyo. And I'm happy. Hey Hank, you get the freebie. NOW watch our dust!!!! ALL SEASON LONG!!!!
Hank Steinbrenner Inserts His Foot Into His Big FAT Mouth
2008-03-01 11:50:00
Peter here on this snowy Saturday morning. I came across an article at ESPN dot com that raised my ire and helped me realize that in some cases, when it comes to father and son, the apples don't fall far from the tree...if they fall at all. Here is exactly why. Hank Steinbrenner uttered some comments yesterday about the Boston Red Sox that are sure to steam Red Sox Nation and Red Sox International while showcasing his lack of any kind of intelligence in general. Here they are, in full. I wouldn't have it ANY other way..."Steinbrenner, apparently trying to emphasize that he has no fear of the Yankees' American League competition, has amped up the rivalry between the two teams, intentionally or not."Red Sox Nation?" What a bunch of sh*t that is," he said in an interview with The New York Times' Play magazine. "That was a creation of the Red Sox and ESPN, which is filled with Red Sox fans."Go anywhere in America and you won't see Red Sox hats and jackets, you'll see Yankee hats a...
Hank Steinbrenner slams Red Sox nation
2008-03-01 11:34:00
"For his part, Hank betrays no worry about the competition in the American League, whether it's the Cleveland Indians, who eliminated the Yankees last year; the Detroit Tigers, who added Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis this winter; or, above all, the Red Sox, who have not only won the World Series twice in the last four years but are arguably becoming a national phenomenon,'' wrote the Boston Globe." 'Red Sox Nation?' Hank says. 'What a bunch of [expletive] that is. That was a creation of the Red Sox and ESPN, which is filled with Red Sox fans. Go anywhere in America and you won't see Red Sox hats and jackets, you'll see Yankee hats and jackets. This is a Yankee country. We're going to put the Yankees back on top and restore the universe to order,' " Hank Steinbrenner told the New York Times, Play Magazine

Hank Steinbrenner irks Red Sox
2008-02-24 13:55:00
Hank Steinbrenner, who runs the New York Yankees with his brother Hal, touched a nerve with Boston Red Sox chief operating officer Larry Lucchino with comments to the New York Post, in which he implied strongly that there were Red Sox players on performance-enhancing drugs the Boston Globe reported.Asked how bad fans in Boston might react to Andy Pettitte, Steinbrenner said, "I don't think they would want to be hollering too loud at Andy up in Fenway. They had plenty of players doing this stuff, too. It's just that those players weren't mentioned in the Mitchell Report." Asked about the comments, Lucchino responded in an e-mail, "It serves no purpose at this point to comment on Senator Mitchell's Report and his major contributions to Baseball, or on Mr. Steinbrenner's gratuitous and reckless accusations. So, no comment."

Welcome to the NFL Super Bowl, err?Big Game bye week. Normally, it?s just practice for the off season. No NFL games, reduced to watching the NBA (on TNT), NHL (on OLN), college basketball (on ESPN and ESPN2), or professional curling (on ESPN 12)?it?s a nightmare to prepare us for the nightmarishly long NFL offseason. But it?s so much worse when your favorite team is in the big game.If you?re like me, you?re reduced to writing fake Tom Brady interviews (look, I?m sorry about the shameless self promotion, but I really, really need a new Patriot jersey with my name on the back).I also began writing the longest mock draft in the history of the Internet. So far, the Dolphins and Rams have made their selections (Glenn Dorsey and Jake Long respectively). I?ll probably get the next two picks up sometime this week.View article...

The Mitchell Report - Names, Names, and More Names

If you?re interested, you can download the entire Mitchell Report here.If you?re from New England, you?re probably buried under a foot of snow right now. Some of us never actually made it home from work as Route 1 was?.to put it nicely?a complete disaster. Yet no matter how bad of an afternoon you had, it can?t compare to the afternoon the Yankees just had.Two of their best players surfaced in the Mitchell Report. Two marquee players from their last championship team. Sure, they?re denying it. But it doesn?t matter. This isn?t Jose Canseco throwing out names here. This is a former US Senator. A man who was offered a nomination to the US Supreme Court. A man who went to Northern Ireland and brokered a peace deal. The Ravens gave the Patriots everything they could handle and then some. Hank Steinbrenner is an idiot
2007-10-26 20:18:00
THE EVIL EMPIRE: The Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees are apparently tired of fighting for the affection of the rest of the country. Now their taking their competition to the galaxy.Hank Steinbrenner, son of the Yankees owner, launched the first rocket into space by saying, "They talk about Red Sox nation. We talk about Yankee universe. As bad as they want it, they'll never be the Yankees with their brand."The quote ran in The New York Times on Wednesday, the morning of the first game of the World Series between the Red Sox and Colorado Rockies. It was relayed to Boston owner John Henry on the field at Fenway Park before Game 2."As far as I'm concerned, they can have Mars and Pluto," Henry said with a laugh. "We're going to settle for Red Sox Nation."And, he was reminded, a chance at a second World Series title in four years."We'll settle for this World," Henry said.http://stats.nypost.com/ml-b/story.asp?i=20...ref=hea&-tm=

Well, Hank Steinbrenner has the family DNA and it's not too hard to see that apple does not fall far from the tree. He's opened his mouth again, as he felt a tad disrespected by the words of Joe Torre last week as to why he felt the Yankees. You don't think Hank has ego, you have to see what he says beloe. From ESPN: Hank Steinbrenner, who has begun to take control over the New York Yankees with brother Hal from their fiery father George, shot back at former manager Joe Torre's comment about the team's contract offer being an "insult.""Where was Joe's career in '95 when my dad hired him?" Hank Steinbrenner told The New York Post. "My dad was crucified for hiring him."Let's not forget what my dad did in giving him that opportunity -- and the great team he was handed," Steinbrenner told the paper.I'm not going to argue with him there; however, the numbers don't lie, Joe was a winner and that helped him become an icon in New York.
