2007-11-08 00:37:00 For the second time in just over a week, country music has lost one of its greats. Hank Thompson, the King of Western Swing, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 82. As with Porter Wagoner last week, Thompson passed from lung cancer.Thompson's music career started after his stint in the Navy during World War II. He dropped out of electrical engineering school and formed a group, the Brozos Valley Boys, in his home of Waco, Texas. Over the next two years, the group recorded for the Globe and Bluebonnet labels to regional success. That exposure caught the eye of Tex Ritter, who helped Thompson get a deal on Capitol Records starting in 1947.The next year, their single Humpty Dumpty Heart went up to number two on the country chart and was followed by 59 more top 40 hits over the next 33 years. The biggest came in 1952 when The Wild Side of Life spent fifteen weeks at the top of the chart, the longest of any record that year.Thompson was only able to top the chart two more times, ...

WSMV-Nashville is reporting that Hank Thompson’s lung cancer, the same ailment that claimed Wagoner’s life, is “getting worse”.
