An Open Heart's Desire for Happiness
2008-10-30 21:00:00 1.The purpose of spiritual practice is to fulfill our desire for happiness. We are all equal in wishing to be happy and to overcome our suffering, and I believe that we all share the right to fulfill this aspiration. When we look at the happiness we seek and the suffering we wish to avoid, most evident are the pleasant and unpleasant feelings we have as a result of our sensory experience of the tastes, smells, textures, sounds, and forms that we perceive around us. There is, however, another level of experience. True happiness must be pursued on the mental level as well.If we compare the mental and physical levels of happiness, we find that the experiences of pain and pleasure that take place mentally are actually more powerful. For example, though we may find ourselves in a very pleasant environment, if we are mentally depressed or if something is causing us profound concern, we will hardly notice our surroundings. On the other hand, if we have inner, mental happiness, we find it ea...
The Alchemy of Happiness | Complete Audio Book, Podcast by Jabez L. Van Cle
2008-10-28 07:00:00 He, therefore, is a wise and prudent man, who, after morning prayer, spends an hour renewing his own spiritual reckoning, and says, "My soul, you only have one life; no moment that has passed can be recovered, and in God?s mind the number of your breaths has been set down and cannot be increased. When life is done, no spiritual highways will hold the traffic of your freighted soul, therefore what you would do, you must do now; so treat this day as if your life were spent, and this, an extra day, was granted you by special favor of Almighty God. What folly greater than to lose this chance?"- Selection from Al-Ghazzali's Alchemy of Happiness, interpreted by Javez L. Van Cleef1.The Alchemy of Happiness (Kimiya'e al Saadat) by one of the most celebrated muslim mystic of all time, Imam Al Ghazzali, is considered a timeless spiritual masterpiece. It is an abridgment of Ghazzali's magnus opus, his famous Arabic treatise on mystical Islam, The Revival of the Religious Sciences (Ihya Ulu...
Happiness
2008-10-20 14:13:00 Sometimes the world is a really horrible place and we all just moan about all the bad things (i am so guilty of that!) but every now and again something happens to make you understand how fortunate you are.I took this photo from our balcony and i just love it. It was one of those dark Mediterranean stormy days that started out perfect but ended with lighting and rain and this was sort of in between all that. (it looked so much better in real life though!) I made me smile and think about how extremely lucky i am!Everyone should have pictures of things you appreciate to make everything else seem worthwhile! :)

The Pursuit of Happiness.
2008-10-17 16:26:00 Thought of the Day: "Love isn't someone you can live with..... it's someone you can't live without".....I apologize dear reader for not writing and updating you on my travels. I have thought of you but when there is so much in life to experience, there is not enough time to write about them. When I look back at the past, I realize that much of what I wrote before was written from a position of pain. It was my effort to rationalize what I was feeling. Today, I smile as I sit here at my breakfast table, eating my cereal. My life today is different from what it was. Positive thinking has changed my perception and outlook on life. What caused the change? It was a desire to be happy. We all have a set amount of time on this earth. You can spend it either in sadness, or you can take your destiny into you hands and mould your future.I choose the latter.thought du jourNote about the photo:If you had told me a few months ago that I would have the opportunity to get press credentials to sho...

Shortlived Happiness
2008-08-11 17:22:00 Ever wondered why happiness must be so short-lived? It always is. The person, you are … no matter how good or whatsoever, goes always in background. Always. ps: People had problems with my passowrd-protected posts always. Not anymore. Few weeks back someone actually managed to break into it. Now I won’t ever be comfortable to write things as ...
No Words = Happiness
2008-07-28 17:28:00 I can never write when I’m happy. My creativity has always come from pain, heartache, and loss. It’s almost like those deep and dark emotions cook up the sentences inside of me and if I don’t get them out in some form or fashion I will burn from the inside out. I haven’t written in a ...

How to be happy - Part 1
2008-07-16 15:33:00 Mama always said, “If’n you ain’t got anyting good to say don’t say nuttin at all!” So lately I haven’t said much. During my silence I did some soul searching to find out why I seemed to be in a slump. The process I went through to discover the reasons for my slight depression might be able to help other people who are going through a crisis in their lives. If you are lacking motivation, feeling a little down, or don’t feel happiness as you once did then I have a fix for the rut you find yourself in. Getting real with how you feel What are your feelings about your life? I asked myself this very same question and for me the best way to get anything done is to make a list. So I made a list and decided that I would write down the emotions and feeling that I experienced when I thought about the present course of my life. Think about how your life would be if you were to repeat the last few months or years for the rest of your life. For me I felt...

Finding Happiness - What the Pursuit is All About
2008-06-09 17:29:00 By Eric Eliacin  http://ezinearticles-.com/?expert=Eric_Eliacin What is happiness? How do we achieve it? People all over the world have struggled over these questions for centuries. The truth is, the answers have always been out there! Every American has heard the phrase “the pursuit of happiness,” but not a lot of people understand what it really means. “Happiness” is not something you must strive for; instead, happiness is something you achieve via the pursuit of another goal. People don’t wake up some time in their lives and say, “I’m happy now.” Everyone must find his or her own unique path to happiness. So how do you find your path? First, picture yourself in a perfect world. Try not to think of the cliché fantasy of a sandy beach drinking a piña colada. Instead, try to think of what changes you would make to your current situation to make it ideal. Would you prefer a different job? Do you wish you had a be...
Happiness in 5 Steps
2008-06-09 17:23:00 By Mel Mcintyre http://ezinearticles.-com/?expert=Mel_Mcintyre Ah, happiness; that elusive state everybody wants a piece of. But we spend so much time searching for it that we overlook the obvious. Unlike some of the other essentials in life, such as money, food, clothing, etc., this one doesn’t exist outside of us. If you really want to be happy and aren’t just fond of the idea of being happy, you have the means at your disposal to create your own happiness any time you wish. Here are five of the more common things you can do to boost your spirits and feel great without spending a dime! 1. Grin & Wear It Is your glass always half-empty? Half of something is better than nothing. Half a bottle of champagne is still champagne. If you can afford that, you’ve got more than most people will ever have. It sounds corny, but contented people really do think positive. The ability to see the good points in others or to make the most of a situation can easily put a smile ...

Perspectives on Laughter
2008-06-02 15:15:00 Have you ever noticed that when you are caught up in a stressful situation for a while, you are much more likely to pick up a cold or flu? And when everything's going well you don't get sick as often? It's been shown in medical research that both stress and laughter have effects on the immune system, one having negative effects and the other positive ones. Laughter helps to stabilize blood pressure, stimulate circulation, aid digestion, increase oxygen supply to muscles, decrease muscle tension, and leaves you with an overall sense of well-being to name just a few.

Falling off the edge of happiness
2008-06-02 06:18:00 The headless blogger as photographed by her 4-year-old daughter. I may give the impression that I'm a super mom who is always happy, with-it and positive. But in reality, small perturbations can upset the equilibrium and send me into a funk. Most of the time, I can talk myself out of it ("Snap out of it, you idiot!") and a lot of the time I am just too busy to wallow in self-pity. I know, being depressed is valid condition, but I can't get past the feeling of it being a self-absorbed indulgence. Three day weekends often bring this about, as I'm apparently sensitive to shifts in daily schedule and the pressure to spend quality time with the kids. I heard this Radio Lab episode on Deception, and learned that the power of self-deception makes us more successful and happier people. The ones who are more realistic tend to be more cynical and depressed. Which means that for the most part, I'm just deluding myself into being happy. There's a nice happy thought! People who...

Positive Thinking and Happiness
2008-05-27 14:00:00 Though it may seem more like a personal objective, being a more positive person can have a dramatic impact on your relationship as well. By increasing your ability to appreciate what you have and trying to foster a more realistic, optimistic outlook on your everyday life, you are able to remove some of the obstacles to a happy healthy relationship. For instance, if you were to look at the various actions you have performed which have negatively impacted your partner, how many of them were as a result of some bad feeling on your part? Maybe you were tired and depressed and you lashed out at your partner for some minor reason; or maybe you were stressed with the daily grind of working life and sometimes thought it necessary to remind your partner that his/her life was easier (which inevitably would lead to conflict). Now imagine those circumstances if you had been more optimistic about the underlying cause of your annoyance. Instead of complaining about your job, a more optimist...

Happiness - 5 Steps To Happiness Now
2008-05-27 01:33:00 People who are sick typically seek better health; and people who aren't sick typically seek wealth rather than health. But everyone wishes to be happy. Sick people are not happy people; they want to feel better - to be well and happy. And, a great many people seek money, or riches, because they are under the impression that money can buy them happiness, or that "rich people" are happy people. But even people who do harm to others somehow think they'll be happier, or better-off, as a result. But is it wise to seek happiness? This is obviously a play on words; but your subconscious might not think so. The idea of seeking something implies that you don't already have it, or you aren't "there" yet. Happiness isn't really a "thing;" and it isn't a place, either. Happiness is the word we give the feeling of "unimpeded spiritual flow." It is important to think about that; because, if you want to be happy, it is important to know what it is you want. And, these days, it seems as if mos...

Looking For The Only Happiness
2008-05-25 15:38:00 And as we slowly give up all that we once required to keep ourselves happy, and which did just the opposite, we find ourselves slowly becoming really happy, for true generosity, giving with the heart, and not the mind, is the only true happiness.

Stress Relief Through Laughter And Play
2008-05-16 15:38:00 I guess most of us at some time in our lives have experienced a feeling of overwhelm. That's the time when you feel absolutely bombarded by stress and frustration everywhere you turn. In these situations you are most likely to be laughing much less and spending a whole lot more time frowning. If so, this would be a good time to do something different to make a positive change and bring some happiness and balance back into your life.
The Wisdom of Happiness
2008-05-16 15:33:00 While the narrative changes somewhat from century to century, philosophy to philosophy, speaker to speaker, the search for happiness continues to be the driving reason detre for most of the population of the planet. We want to be more, do more and have more. The words may be elegantly phrased or camouflaged as verbiage, but at the end of the day it's still a choice for greater levels of pleasure and less pain in life.

The Sweet Simplicity of Happiness : Part Six
2008-05-14 10:29:00 Our garden was given a great surprise recently with the growth and flowering of this magnificent honeysuckle. Our brilliant neighbours planted this before we had even moved into the house and just look at how it has spread over to our side of the garden too! The colours and the syrupy fragrance are well known and LBH and I are both feeling rather grateful to have this welcome visitor. Last year was entirely focused on the inside of the house and this year we have been pottering in the garden at every spare opportunity. Boo rolls around getting to know the other feline neighbours, I add organic compost to the beds and LBH lifts bags of sand and heavy tiles. You can see who got the short end of the stick in this year’s project. And the honeysuckle? The honeysuckle just is and in so doing reminds us to ‘just be’ from time to time too.
