Take a Frozen Vacation to Harbin, China Ice Bars
2008-01-25 17:52:00
Want to get away from it all? Consider a trip to Harbin City in northeastern China, just a few balmy (relatively speaking) hours’ drive south of Siberia. Every winter, the city has an ice festival. Ice bars ? where the bar, chairs, tables and glasses are carved from ice ? are popular, as is the vodka offered there. Be careful not to slip off your chair though, if it starts to melt. However, with winter temperatures of about -10 F., that’s not likely to happen. Harbin is known for long, cold winters.

A Little Change: Aussie Election a Harbinger of American 'Reform'?
2007-11-27 10:11:00
by Chris Floyd The departure of John "Bush Boy" Howard from office in Australia is most welcome, of course, but the administration of new Labor Party PM Kevin Rudd may less of a rupture than meets the eye. Rudd has clearly cast himself in the Bill Clinton-Tony Blair mode: a "pragmatist" steering his nominally progressive party firmly toward the right, jettisoning any platforms and principles that might hinder "electability" – i.e., assuring the elite that their wads won't be threatened if the "progressives" take power. A first look at Rudd is offered (via Chris Cook of our sister site, Pacific Free Press) from Sid Astbury in the Bangkok Post: [Rudd], the former diplomat overturned Howard's 11-year-old conservative government by promising to keep change to a minimum. He doesn't describe himself as a socialist - or even the head of a party from the Left. He's Labor-lite and most of his policies are little different from Howar...

Honeybell = Harbinger of Death to Dentists
2007-11-06 15:07:00
I was traumatized by a dentist at age eight. My regular dentist had retired, and my mother was recommended to this quack DDS by a friend. A friend who apparently hated me with the fire of a thousand burning suns.Dr. SickoSonOfABitch was a sadist who was too cheap to mix his impression paste to the right ratio, thereby occluding my airway with every impression taken. To take x-rays he would use this contraption that moved these plastic pegs into my ears, perhaps to hold my head still. In any case, he moved the little pegs so tightly into my ears, I was streaming tears before he even began the x-ray. After two sessions, my mother never took me back. Now I think I may be wreaking revenge against all those who carry the drill. For years I refused to go to a dentist. I cleaned my teeth with an OCD passion, and flossed like one possessed. Possessed with plaque demons perhaps. Finally, in high school, I found a dentist I LOVED. He was a sweet, gentle, man. Not only a great dentist b...

Venturing out of our dorm rooms and out of our schoolwork, we went to a section of Harbin known as "Old Harbin." Here, there were lots of great things to see, chief among them being the architecture. Here is a very beautiful mosqque, closed to the public, but still very beautiful from the outside. This old building was quite a strange site. On the very corner of the intersection, it looked almost as if the wrecking crew quit a little prematurely! I'm not sure what its uses were. New shops have, like in many cities with long histories, set up shop (no pun intended) in second-hand (or 10th hand) locations. If you look at the top of the building, there are some details similar to that of the octoganal building in the picture above. Here, I was just hanging out under the shade of a rather large tree, and watching the pedi-cabs stream by. Again, you can see some of the architecture typical of the area.-- china tour !     you are welcomed

Shop fronts on the streets of Harbin Well, I’ve been home for a week now from my trip to Harbin, still with a cold, and my mind whirring trying to compartmentalize all that I was lucky enough to see in the latter parts of my stay. During those days, I was fortunate enough to take in a few sights, particularly in the neighbouring city of ChangChun - a city most famous for its role in the Japanese invasion of NorthEast China, and its subsequent set up of the puppet nation of “Manchuria.” This includes the story of Puyi, or the last Chinese emperor, who was caught in the middle of everything, a seemingly reluctant player during this time of Chinese history - a time that the locals essentially view as a holocaust of their own. It was definitely eye-opening to peruse through his palace, which is also home to a museum dedicated to the historical recording of Japanese aggression. Still, I couldn’t help but wonder whether there was some element of “propaga...
Harbin China International Ice and Snow Festival
2007-09-28 20:23:00
I have never seen a more incredible display of Ice and Snow Art in my life.Geographically, it is located in Northeast China under the direct influence of the cold winter wind from Siberia. The average temperature in summer is 21.2 degrees Celsius, -16.8 degrees Celsius in winter. It can be as cold as - 38.1 degrees Celsius in winter. This is cold, over prepare, you will be happy you did.The annual "Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival" as well as snow and ice competitions has been held since 1985.The festival officially runs from January 5 through February 15, but often opens a week early and runs into March, since it’s usually still cold enough. The "Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival" is one of the world's four largest ice and snow festivals, along with Japan's Sapporo Snow Festival, Canada's Quebec Winter Carnival, and Norway's Ski Festival. When I visited Harbin, there were many places to see the ice and snow displays, they are all over town. There are ice sculpt...
Top 10: Ian Wyatt wins ... and revs up Harbin
2007-07-03 18:10:00
Last December, we featured a report of 100+ stocks, Top Picks for 2007. Now at mid-year, we turn to the top 10 performers, asking for their new favorite idea for the second half of the year.Ian Wyatt, editor of The Growth Report, was the top performer in our 2007 Top Picks report through 06/01/07. His selection, LJ International (NASDAQ: JADE) rose 178%. For his new favorite, he revs up Harbin Electric (NASDAQ: HRBN). “Harbin Electric is a growing manufacturer of linear motors in China. Revenues are currently derived in China, but the company has its sights on international markets. Strong demand for industrial applications in China will drive the market for linear motors, including factory automation, airport applications, packaging and the oil service industries. "Low-cost manufacturing facilities in a modern 200,000 square foot manufacturing facility coupled with cheaper labor costs in China give Harbin an added competitive advantage. “A...

iPhone snapshot: Harbinger or mirage?
2007-04-30 21:47:00
Apple fanatics who can’t wait for the June launch of Apple’s new iPhone got a little treat to tease them over the weekend: a photo allegedly taken with an iPhone popped up on Flickr. The photo has since been taken down, but the data included with the images suggests it was taken with one of the as yet unreleased devices, and the specs seem to match with what Apple has promised for the iPhone. The photographer is apparently an Apple employee, but many bloggers noted that the EXIF data posted on Flickr can be easily edited. read it here news
NetTV and NetPC: The harbingers of a new era?
2007-02-12 16:09:02
[via Atanu] Internet is still a niche market segment in India, a point borne out by the numbers. Anand Sridharan, in his analysis of the current state of the Internet in India, captures the reasons behind it and also takes a look ahead as to what it takes to increase the usage of Internet in India. It is well understood that if the Internet economy is to really take off in India, it has to reach down from the upper (and upper-middle class sections) and penetrate the lower middle class. This is the population segment that the mobile phone market has been able to penetrate and consequently made India one of the fastest growing mobile markets in the world! If cheap (”Made for India”) handsets and ever-reducing call charges have made the mobile ubiquitous in India, can the Internet (and computing) industry in India ride on the equivalent - cheap computers and affordable internet access? Novatium, a Chennai-based company co-founded by Rajesh Jain and Ashok Jhunjhunwala, seems...
