Harlan County Fiscal Court Opposing 84th House District Special Election
2008-02-22 23:25:00 The Harlan County Fiscal Court unanimously passed a resolution opposing the March 18th special election for the vacant 84th House District seat. The seat was vacated when Brandon Smith (R) defeated former state Rep.Scott Alexander (D) in the state Senate District 30 special election earlier this month. Alexander was nominated to be the Democratic candidate for the March 18th special election, but Alexander is unopposed, the Republican Party of Kentucky opted not to field a candidate. According to the Harlan County Fiscal Court, the county will still be required to hold an election and still have to spend money doing it. This is just about the dumbest thing I have ever heard, Alexander will be the only candidate on the ballot, this is why our counties are broke, stupid stuff like this is just cash down the crapper. Harlan Daily Enterprise The Harlan County Fiscal Court unanimously passed a resolution during their monthly meeting Wednesday opposing the election. The court expressed...

2008-02-15 03:11:00 I thought that the WGA settled for far too little as well, but Harlan Ellison has a special way of venting about it… Taken from Harlan Ellison’s online community, reproduced in its unedited entirety below: HARLAN ELLISON ON THE WRITERS STRIKE SETTLEMENT YOU HAVE MY PERMISSION TO RE-POST THIS ANYWHERE: Creds: got here in 1962, written for just about ...
Vote Scott Alexander, Possible Landslide in Bell and Harlan Counties
2008-02-02 19:25:00 On Tuesday February 5th, Bell, Perry, Harlan and Leslie Counties will go to the polls and elect a new State Senator. Former state Rep. Scott Alexander (D) is facing state Rep. Brandon Smith (R), Smith answers to the Republican hierarchy, people like Senate President David Williams (R). Williams has no regard to our welfare and our region's prosperity, to elect Brandon Smith would be a tragedy. Brandon Smith is knocking on Church doors saying Scott Alexander supports casino gaming. The Republican State Leadership Committee, RSLC, is running a negative ad (HERE) showing Alexander as a casino loving hack, of course the Herald Leader has not reported that and probably wont, they are clearly backing Smith. Scott Alexander wants us to choose if WE want casinos or not and Brandon Smith does not want YOU to have a choice. Lieutenant Governor Daniel Mongiardo (D) is also urging that his constituency support Scott Alexander on Tuesday and has a wonderful ad running in the district. Rep. Ri...
UPDATED: David Williams Spews More Venom; Harlan County Judge Executive Res
2008-01-26 00:56:00 I am happy to say Pol Watchers is a blog after-all! They have proved that point beyond any reasonable doubt as they have posted the hearsay story of the year. Senate President David Williams (R) gives the Lexington Herald Leader a dose of "what I have heard and I hear" and Kentucky's largest newspaper soaked it all up like a biscuit on runny gravy. The Herald Leader failed to mention the feud that has existed between Lieutenant Governor Daniel Mongiardo (D) and Senate President David Williams (R) and the fact that Williams is going to waist tax payer's money by meeting with our Attorney General over hearsay and bullshit. It makes me wonder how Williams ever passed the bar. Of course STILL no mention or rebuttal from Williams on the fact that U.S. Rep Hal Rogers (R, KY-5) has been actively campaigning for Republican state Senate candidate Brandon Smith, Williams of course called Governor Steve Beshear's (D) support of the Democratic candidate, Scott Alexander, “intimidation or...
Roger Noe (D) to Push Harlan County Redistricting Plan in Special Election,
2007-12-10 05:05:00 Former state Rep. Roger Noe (D) Harlan will campaign on the need to return Harlan County to a single House District if elected to the State Senate. Of course no legislation on redistricting can be submitted until the 2010 census, redistricting will commence that next year. Harlan was split into 4 Representative districts following the 2000 census and has been a sore point ever since. Many feel that Harlan County's interests and needs are not being served, even though most that reside within Rep. Rick Nelson's (D) section of the county are pleased with his performance and Nelson loves serving the county in which he was born. Noe feels the county should return to a single district and will make that his legislative agenda in the 2010-11 legislative sessions. Noe is currently the front runner to be selected to represent the Democratic Party in the upcoming Senate District 30 special election. Lieutenant Governor Elect Daniel Mongiardo (D) will resign shortly after being sworn in. T...

The Woods by Harlan Coben
2007-08-03 11:17:00 A the start of this novel, I found it a bit of a slow grind and patchy, but in the last 3rd it all comes together and makes sense. The last 3rd turns into a gripping and hearting pounding race to finish it. Well worth slogging through the first 150 pages.

Sonny Dee Bar, Tardy, Harlan Dun 2000 AQHA broodmare
2007-07-27 21:47:00 Cassie is a gorgeous mare with awesome conformation and movement. She is extremely athletic and is bred for halter and ranch work. We bought her as a riding horse, but we found out from her breeder that she suffered an elbow kick as a 2 year old. Although she is 100 sound and rideable, our vet does not think she will hold up to regular riding, so we are offering her for sale as a broodmare. She has had two gorgeous foals. She is an easy keeper and a nice, quiet mare. Price is 3,000 negotiable.

Harlan ranks as 16th best NFL "owner"
2007-07-05 17:29:00 Green Bay Packers CEO Bob Harlan was rated as the NFL's 16th best owner as ranked by Sports Illustrated's SI.com.Of course, Harlan doesn't own the team. But he's the closest thing to an owner in the NFL's only publicly owned franchise.Michael Silver writes, "Harlan, the 70-year-old CEO of the league's sole publicly owned team, had planned to step aside for team president John Jones. But Jones was placed on administrative leave in May -- four days before he was supposed to take over -- meaning Harlan will stay on until another successor is in place. The good news is that the Packers have already pulled off a successful renovation of Lambeau Field and are on strong footing financially."

Harlan declines to give details
2007-05-31 13:35:00 The headline in today's Green Bay Press-Gazette reads, "Packers Board of Directors, not public, gets details on Jones."Tony Walter reports, "The Green Bay Packers Board of Directors was given details Wednesday about what the team's executive committee said were 'management concerns' involving President John Jones, and which led to his taking a leave of absence from the organization."So what do you think folks? Are you satisfied? Does the public deserve the juicy details regarding the "management concerns" raised by Jones? Do you trust Bob Harlan's judgement and the reasoning that Jones deserves some amount of privacy?I'm starting to sway more toward the latter. But perhaps I'm already sick of hearing about this whole ordeal five days into it. A whole lot about nothing, perhaps.Photo credit: wisconsinhistory.org

2007-01-13 17:27:01 "Bob Harlan, the Green Bay Packers' CEO, expressed no concern that quarterback Brett Favre's recent cancellation of his membership to Oneida Golf & Riding Club was a sign he's going to retire," reports the Green Bay Press-Gazette.The article continues, "Harlan confirmed that Favre cancelled his membership sometime in the last few weeks. Harlan hasn't talked to Favre about it, but said with former teammates Ryan Longwell and Doug Pederson gone, Favre rarely played golf last year, so the membership wasn't worth it for him."Harlan said the Packers have a corporate membership for golf at Oneida in General Manager Ted Thompson's name, so Thompson or any other Oneida member Favre knows could accompany him for rounds if Favre returns next season."The Favre speculation continues. So does the fact that Favre cancelled his golf membership in Green Bay signal that he could be on his way out the door? Or as one person with a hint of sarcasm commenting on the PackersNews.com page put it,...
Harlan to be honored
2006-12-20 16:44:02 "The Packers will honor team Chairman and CEO Bob Harlan during the first commercial timeout of Thursday's game," reports the Green Bay Press-Gazette.The article continues, "Harlan will be attending his final regular-season game at Lambeau Field as head of the franchise. He will retire in May after 18 seasons in his current role. A video tribute will be played on the stadium's scoreboard video screens."
Harlan comments on fans
2006-12-06 10:19:01 The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel said that " it was clear that several thousand fans did not attend the 38-10 shellacking the Packers suffered at the hands of the New York Jets."This observation supposedly even required Packers president Bob Harlan to justify the situation saying, "I think we had a lot of people in the (outdoor) club seats go inside and watch the game on TV. I talked to some people who were in the atrium and they said the crowd was bigger than normal."I was at the game and I did not particularly notice that several thousand fans were missing. Obviously the crowd had thinned considerably after halftime, but the crowd looked to be pretty normal early in the game. Sure there were some empty seats here and there, but not several thousand.
Harland force behind the Students
2006-10-16 12:10:00 by Aaron Scott*For much of the winter David Lyons looked a spent force as an International rugby player. Throughout the Super 14 season his form was slated by critics: he was too predictable, too one-dimensional, not dynamic enough. He found himself relegated to the Waratah's bench. In May he was a shock omission from the Wallabies training squad. He didn't play a Test all winter. Only gradually did it emerge that he had been suffering from a prolapsed disc in his back. Either way, it seemed that the 40-Test veteran and 2004 John Eales medal winner was washed-up at 26.Enter University's Strength and Conditioning coach, Martin Harland. Lyons' problems were pin-pointed. Two years of injury (groin and back) had eroded his superb physical attributes. Barely able to drag himself through an 80-minute match, Lyons had shunned the gym and the training paddock. His legs had all but atrophied.Harland decided to settle the prolapsed disc in Lyons' back, redevelop his core strength, then r...
