New Release - George Harmonica Smith - Now You Can Talk About Me
2009-06-03 09:01:00
Now You Can Talk About MeAccording to Lars Gandil; There's more than a few California harp players who grew up under the influence of the man who was truly the king of West Coast blues harmonica. To be sure, George "Harmonica" Smith outshone even the great Little Walter when it came to blowing chromatic harp. Sadly under-recorded and under-appreciated, Smith deserves recognition as one of the greats. This release goes a long way in rectifying that situation. Of the fourteen offerings, five are extremely rare 60s reissues, including a real rocker called "Tight Dress" and a rather haughty little number titled "Blowing the Blues." The remainders were produced by harmonica virtuoso Rod Piazza. In the mix are powerhouse blues pieces like "Goin' Down Slow" and the previously unissued "Last Chance." Top these with such unexpected gems as "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" and "Peg O' My Heart" and what you have is pure harmonica heaven.Track Listing1. Blowing the Blues 2. Yes, Baby 3...
Sonny Boy Williamson I Documentary Clips
2009-05-12 09:01:00
Complete Recorded Works, Vol. 5 (1945-1947)Here is a short documentary film on the life of Sonny Boy Williamson, a pioneer of blues harmonica playing. Sonny Boy Williamson (John Lee Curtis Williamson, was born on 30 March 1914 and he was murdered on 1 June, 1948. He was first popular harmonica player to use the name Sonny Boy Williamson. The film clips below give excellent bio information of Sonny Boy Williamson and shows photos of him and his wife. I think that this film is important because I have noticed that some modern blues fans don't know that difference between Sonny Boy Williamson and Rice Miller. And I believe as a harmonica player it is important to study the playing of Sonny Boy Williamson.Sonny Boy Williamson I @SqueezeMyLemonSonny Boy Williamson I @Amazon.com
Harmonica Web Site in the Spotlight
2009-05-09 09:01:00
I recently wrote a post on some of the great YouTube tutorials for harmonica players. And I was contacted by Tony Eyers who operates the web site Harmonica Academy. I was pleased to hear from him because I think harmonica fans will want to check his site out.According the his bio;Tony was born in Australia and began playing harmonica in the 1970's, inspired by Jim Fitting while studying at Yale University. He returned to Australia in the 1980's, and became a well known blues player.I spent some time going through his web site and I really like the instruction provided there. Very easy to understand, includes harmonica tabs as well as sound files that help you understand how the riffs being taught should sound. Each lesson builds on past lessons. And even though I have been playing for years and have looked at a lot of different instruction methods I got a lot of good information from going through his instructions. And plan to go back often. For example he has some blues harmonica...
Blues Harmonica Questions and Harmonica Tutorials
2009-04-09 09:01:00
What I really want to talk about today is harmonica playing, and where you can find answers to questions that you may have, and where you can view some great Harmonica Tutorials.I have mentioned many times, and probably will again that I play blues harmonica for my own entertainment mostly, but every now and then for friends and family too. And I have also mentioned that I answer questions over at Yahoo answers. Well many of the questions about blues harmonica come up over and over. And I thought, hey, I could do a blog post on those questions. And when people ask, I can just point them to this blog post.People want to know what harmonica to get? Where to buy harmonicas? How to hold a harmonica after you get it? How to play a single note? How to bend notes? Where the can find books, CDs, DVDs and other training material about blues harmonica? etc, etc and etc.I have answered these and many other questions about blues harmonica so many times, that I am tired of answering them. Little Walter: His Best The Chess 50th Anniversary Collection
2009-03-07 10:00:00
His Best:Little WalterIf you read SML often you probably know that I love harmonica players. And the harmonica player that I love listening to the most is Little Walter. And the Little Walter album that I like listening to the most, is His Best :(Little Walter)The Chess 50th Anniversary Collection. I am serious when I tell you that if I was placed on a desert island, and could only have one album, this might be the album. And I bet someone is wondering how could I pick a Little Walter album over say a Muddy Waters album, or maybe a Howlin' Wolf album. Well part of it may be my mood right now, if I pose this question on another day, I might come up with a different album, but right now this is how I feel.I agree with Robert Gordon's assessment of Little Walter when he said;Marion "Little Walter" Jacobs is perhaps the most influential harmonica player on contemporary blues, and his collection is a great place to start. He was trained by Muddy Waters, but brought a more swinging feel...
Trina Hamlin: It's ok to love your harmonica...
2008-11-15 14:00:00
OK, this maybe a case of my reaching out past the boundaries of blues and kind of dabbling over into the folk rock genre, but I think this is cool to do from time to time. I'm trying not to be locked into the blues thing, because I think many musicians are not. Consider Trina Hamlin. Any body who can play a harmonica the way she plays it in the below video is alright with me.It's ok to love your harmonica...Trina Hamlin @WikipediaTrina Hamlin mp3s @Amazon.com

It reminds me of some of my solo jam sessions, and I like it and and hope you do to.Girl with harmonicaNotes from YouTube;Justine from UK (harmonica), Lukasz from Poland (bass), Javier from Spain (guitar) are playing blues on festival in Poland. One of my favorite blues hymns to play on my harmonica is Amazing Grace. I really like this version by Terry McMillan. May God rest his soul. I could only hope to one day be able to play it this good.I think this version fits for a day like to day, and I hope you enjoy it."Amazing Grace" Played On Harmonica By Terry McMillan
Harmonica Day 6 - Junior Wells

There is no way that I could even try to do a blues harmonica week without doing a post on Junior Wells. The man is right up there with Liltle Walter in my mind. I love his song Messing with the Kid. It is one of the songs the attracted me to the blues harmonica. Harmonica Day 5 - Friday Funny Darth Vader Blues
2008-03-22 05:13:00
On Fridays I like to take a look at the funny side of the blues and because I am also doing harmonica week the below video seemed to fit. I'm a Star Wars fan too so it fits even better. The harmonica part is Sonny Terry, but I am sure that most of you know that.I think that the blues are a joyous music, for the most part. Even though many of the lyrics seem to be about bad things, often times this is "tongue in cheek" and is played to get a laugh. Living the blues means mostly having a hard time, but it also means having a good laugh too.Darth Vader Feels Blue
Harmonica Day 4 - Little Walter
2008-03-21 02:31:00
Well back down there in Alabama, or any where else, you could walk into a pawn shop and buy a harmonica for 5o cents, after Little Walter put out that record Juke it went up to 5 or 10 dollars.Sam Lay - Drummer for Little Walter, Howlin' Wolf and Paul Butterfield Blues BandI relate to my favorite blues harmonica players for different reasons. Little Walter is one of my favorites because he is from my home state, because of the work he did in creating the Chicago electric harmonica blues sound with Muddy Waters, and because he was a man who definitely lived the blues.Little Walter R&R Hall of Fame filmNotes from YouTube - A brief film about blues harmonica icon Little Walter Jacobs, which was shown as part of his induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on March 10, 2008.Hound Dog Taylor & Little Walter - Wild About you babyLittle Walter You're So FineReferences;Little Walter's induction into the R&R Hall of Fame - Chicago blues icon Little Walter was inducted i...
Harmonica Day 3 - Sonny Terry
2008-03-19 21:58:00
Sonny Terry is of course a member of the duo Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee. They had a great career as blues and folk musicians. If you want to be a blues harmonica player studying Sonny Terry and his playing style will serve you well. The man's timing was the best in my opinion, the way he sings, shots and plays the harmonica all at the same time is a kind of magic. I love the part of the below video when Mr. Terry ask, "What you say harmonica?" You have to love a man who talks to his harmonica.Sonny Terry - These Women Is Killin' Me (1966) Sonny Terry/Callin' MamaCheck out wikipedia's list of harmonica blues players.Notable harmonica performances by other bluesmen;Good Rockin Charles - Don't Start Me To Talkin' (1977) Big Walter 'Shakey' Horton - Shakey's Blues (1965)Sonny Boy Williams I Documentary
American Idol: Love Chikezie, Hate His Harmonica
2008-03-19 19:39:00
Previously - Male stripper and all-around cheeseball David Hernandez got bounced. Paula Abdul was fairly lucid, but I did see a little bit of drool in the corner of her mouth. Ryan Seacrest is still the worst white person ever. Seacrest lets us know that the contestants will be murdering the Beatles again this evening. Yoko Ono is over the moon about this shit. You know she hated the Beatles. They interfered with her succubus-ing of Lennon, and her art installations involving animal pelts and jelly and yodeling. The audience is insane. Like, I'm-burning-in-pits-of-hell-ins-ane. Seacrest strolls out. They're not cheering for you, bitch. The audience numbers five hundred strong. That's a lot of screaming tweens and family in from Georgia. Harmonica Day 2 - James Cotton
2008-03-19 02:37:00
I love the blues music of James Cotton. Probably because he is an award winning harmonica player and because he makes it look so easy. He always seems to be having fun when he is playing. You can read his bio at the James Cotton offical web site. James Cotton - Rocket 88James Cotton live at a radio show in 1993Here is a James Cotton interview in Spanish. The notes at YouTube say, "James Cotton in Buenos Aires, Argentina, few interviews during press conference." Over at the "I AM FUEL, YOU ARE FRIEND" Blog, there is an impressive group of mp3s for the song "Bring it on home" by many great musicians. You should check this out, it is a great post. One of them is James Cotton doing Bring it on Home. Not sure who is doing the vocals but Mr. Cotton is doing the harmonica.More James Cotton @ SqueezeMyLemon.
A Little Sonnny Boy Williamson Christmas Music Video
2008-03-18 03:39:00
I love the blues harmonica. I play harmonica for my own entertainment mostly and consider it my favorite of all the instruments. It is so cool how this simple instrument became such a powerful part of the blues. I intend to post various videos and maybe even some mp3s of some of my favorite harmonica players all this next week. This video includes a couple of songs that have every thing that a good blues song should have, IMHO. Great lyrics, with many double entendres, references to the devil, great harmonica playing, all done by a master bluesman. I play these songs during the holiday period but they are good anytime I hear them.

Need a Harmonica player for your band?

I found this interesting article from the Arizona Republic about a program at the John C. Lincoln hospital in Phoenix Arizona.Basically it is a class put on by Mike Clark, a registered respiratory therapist at the hospital where patients with mainly COPD are learning to play the Harmonica. By using the harmonica these patients can hear exactly how they are breathing along with learning a instrument and getting some PEP therapy along with it I'm sure. They used to use therapies for strengthening their lungs by blowing out candles, walking treadmills or blowing up small balloons but it sounds like this one is a bit more fun.I have to say therapy must be easier to do and stay with it is interesting and fun. Can't help but be a little impressed with this "alternative therapy". I have noticed over the years that the people who do get this highest amount on their Incentive Spirometry seem to have played some type on instrument in the past, mostly it seemed to be a trumpet like instrumen...

Unusual concertos [4a]: Harmonica revisited
2007-10-16 21:56:00
Earlier this week I asked for more comments, and got a few reactions. One of them asked for Villa-Lobos' 1955 neoclassical concerto for harmonica and orchestra. Well, here it is, as usual in 128 kbps, as the CD can still be purchased (e.g. directly from the excellent record company, Chandos). This version is by Tommy Reilly and the Rundfunkorchester des Suedwestfunks under Emmerich Smola (CHAN 9248).The movements:1. Allegro moderato [6:56]2. Andante [5:22]3. Allegro [5:17]MP3 (Sharebee): Villa-Lobos' harmonica concerto.
Harmonica Healing
2007-10-08 09:01:00
With the last month being so extraordinarily stressful, once again I have turned to music as a source of relaxation. Everywhere I go, I carry my Lee Oskar "C" harmonica. Quite honestly, I'm still not sure why I've learned no songs whatsoever; I've been teaching myself to play for a few years now.But blowing in and out on the harmonica is one of my best ways of reducing stress. There is a Zen quality about it. I stop focusing on the stressful events--whatever they may be, I calm down, and I only focus on the sounds I am producing. When my mother, her caregiver, and I spent 10 hours together--much of it in the ER--and the caregiver finally left, and my mother was sedated because of her broken knee, my stress level was only exceeded by my level of exhaustion. So, I asked the nurse if we could turn off the light so that my mother could rest, I put two chairs together so I could elevate my feet, and I began playing my harmonica. For the first time all evening, I could feel the tension ...

The King of the Harmonica
2007-06-23 15:19:00
Sonny Boy Williamson II, nicknamed "King of the Harmonica" by his peers, was one of the most inspiring harp players in blues history. He was born in southwest Madison County at Jackson Tennessee, March 30, 1914, to Ray Williamson and Nancy Utley. His father died when he was just a baby, so he was reared by his mother. At age eleven, he received his first harmonica as a Christmas gift from his mother. According to his half-brother, T. W. Utley, when he was not chopping cotton, milking cows, or doing other farm chores, he was teaching himself to play the harmonica by listening to and playing along with records on an old wind-up record player. By the time he was sixteen, Williamson was jamming around Tennessee and Arkansas with guitarist "Sleepy John" Estes and mandolin demon James "Yank" Rachell. John Lee "Sonny Boy" Williamson helped propel the country blues of his native Southland toward a more urban-blues sound with his blend of originality, country intensity, and the electrifica...

Harmonicas and Musical Elephants
2007-03-06 20:48:02
I thought this four year old elephant playing the harmonica was just the cutest: (if you can’t see the video, click here) This video, via Arbroath, was taken in a little village on Phuket Island, Thailand. After doing a little research, I learned that Thai elephants are naturally interested in music, and have been trained to play harmonicas, drums, pipes, and oversized electronic keyboards. There’s even an elephant orchestra that has released 2 CDs, with a third on the way. Dave Soldier and Richard Lair collaborated with the Thai Elephant Conservatory to train a group of 6 elephants (later expanded to 12) to play various elephant instruments: . (if you can’t see the video, click here) The elephants sound far better on the CD than the video. Listen to more tracks from the Thai Elephant Orchestra at Amazon. Some are surprisingly good, particularly for a herd of elephants. This one was my favorite.
