Then and Now: Tom 'two harpoon' Barber
2007-10-18 01:43:00
Australian Tom Barber in front of a photograph taken by Jonny Lewis in 1977 in Albany, Western Australia. The photograph, part of a Greenpeace exhibition in Sydney (Sept-Oct 2007) celebrating its 30 years in Australia, shows Tom next to a Zodiac holding a copy of the Albany Advertiser front page proclaiming "Whalers Blameless".Tom and Frenchman Jean-Paul Fortom-Gouin had a close call with a harpoon while taking direct action against the Cheynes Beach Whaling Company, Australia's last whaling operation. Tom and Jean-Paul made complaints to the police about the behaviour of the whaling ships. The complaints were rejected.Later during the same campaign, Tom and Jonny Lewis had another close call with a harpoon. Hence, Tom's nickname ... Harpooned on the Whale Watch!!
2007-10-10 05:10:00
So I finally went to Hermanus to see the whales!!!! Absolutely delightful and one of the 101 things to see before you die. However, our accommodation adventure started out as a disaster but ended up brilliantly and the aftermath was a disaster again, I felt like Captain Ayob vs Fawlty Towers thanks to my adventures with Misty Beach Hotel in Hermanus.Like most new age travellers and more senior members of the public, we use our staff to assist us in booking online for our travels and so we booked through the Internet about 3 weeks before our whale watching expedition and the pictures on the Internet were ever so sexy, luxurious and can you imagine ......" member of the Portfolio Collection 2002-2004Welcome The Misty Collection is a group of luxurious accommodation establishments including a Guest House and Hotel in Hermanus Western Cape, South Africa. The impressive lodgings are situated in the best land-based whale watching destination in the world - Hermanus.Accommodation at our hot...
The Second Harpoon
2007-09-13 05:36:00
Tom Barber (above) and photographer Jonny Lewis (www.jonnylewis.org) went out in the Zodiac for the last time on September 22, 1977, to run interference against the Cheynes Beach Whaling Company whale chaser ships off Western Australia. It was Tom's second and Jonny's first close shave with a harpoon.Extract from THE LAST WHALE:"Jonny was rattled by the closeness and the noise of the cannon. His hands shook. He thought the harpoon was going to hit the Zodiac. Jonny thought Tom was lucky. At least he could hold onto the tiller. The crew on the chaser looked pretty happy to have frightened them. Jonny recovered and swung his attention to the whale. It had been hit. Jonny sagged. He felt impotent, useless, filled with overwhelming rage and frustration. Heavy duty.Detached from the world, Jonny noted that the whalers were efficient. They put two more harpoons into the whale, making sure it was dead, brought it alongside, pumped it with air, put a flag on the body and were off for the ne...

In a written statement to Police, Tom Barber said: " ?We were about to cross behind the whale when we heard the thump of the harpoon discharge. The harpoon struck the whale near the centre ...
The Last Whale harpooned by Australians
2007-09-05 04:37:00
By Chris PashPhoto by ED SMIDT Over the 26 years that the Cheynes Beach Whaling Company operated, about 16,100 whales were harpooned: 14,600 sperms whales; 1,500 humpback whales (according to Whale World).http://www.whaleworld.or-g/FAQs/About_Cheynes_Beach_Whal-ing_Company/The last whale was caught on November 20, 1978. That day nine whales were harpooned. To fill the annual quota of 713 whales, the three whales chaser ships had to take six female sperm whales. But on the last day of operation (November 21, 1978) no whales were harpooned. An extract from The Last Whale describing the last day of whaling in Australia:November 21, 1978 --The whale chasers dressed up for their last day. Each of the three vessels had flags and bunting flying. The crews had resigned themselves. The industry was gone and their jobs as well. Those who?d never fired the harpoon cannon got their chance. Skipper Paddy Hart thought he?d give everyone a go. That way they would recall, years later, that they?d ...
Thaaar She Blows! Harpooning a Fat Chick: Is It Tons of Fun?
2007-08-01 23:04:00
Captain Ahab lives in literary history as the man who slew the white whale- why can't that be you? With all the hoopla surrounding banging chicks with 26 waists and 36 inches of jugs, one realizes that there is a far more plentiful supply of questionable looking, obese, and downright homely pieces of tail out there- many of which are something suitable to at least be solicited to suck on your yogurt squirter. I like to refer to them as many men refer to them…Fat Chicks. While society sometimes frowns upon bringing a mastodon home for a casual slam, it's important to know that sometimes the act of banging a fat chick is condonable. I like to affectionately call this going whaling. Although the practice of slaying ocean-going mammals has long been outlawed, the act of seducing rotund slam bags is a practice that is becoming very common- especially given America's disgusting obsession with saturated fat and jelly donuts dipped in strawberry mystery sauce. I am here to...

Ships Ahoy! The Harpoon Missile Family
2007-04-02 14:32:00
The sub-sonic, wave-skimming *GM-84 Harpoon is the US Navy’s sole anti-shipping missile, with the minor exception of small AGM-119B Penguin missiles and anti-tank Hellfires carried on some H-60 helicopters. The Harpoon has accordingly been adapted into several variants, and exported to a wide variety of world navies. Its best known competitor is the French/MBDA *M39/40 Exocet, though recent years have witnessed a growing competitive roster at both the subsonic (Israel’s Gabriel family, Russia’s SS-N-27 Klub family, Saab’s RBS15, Kongsberg’s stealthy NSM, China’s YJ-8/C-802 used recently in Lebanon) and supersonic (Russia’s SS-N-22 Sunburn/Moskit and some SS-N-27 Klub variants, India’s PJ-10 BrahMos derived from Russia’s SS-N-26) levels. Harpoon Bohemian Pilsner - Hopmalt Beer Blog Review
2006-09-21 15:12:01
The Bohemian Pilsner is the second beer I have tried in the Harpoon 100 Barrel Series. The first was a Kellerbier Unfiltered Lager. Both of these brews were very light and crisp and easy to drink on a nice summer day. I figured that since the summer is almost over I would drink this Pilsner before the Oktoberfests start coming in (by the way I am drinking a Brooklyn Oktoberfest as I am writing this). The 100 Barrel Series is a really great way to put out a limited edition beer. The Bohemian Lager is session number 15, which I am assuming means it is the 15th beer in the collection. It was brewed by the President and co-founder of Harpoon, Dan Kenary. Stats: ABV: 4.7%IBU: 42OG: 12 Hopmalt Beer Blog Rating: 7.5 Overall a very light and crisp beer which went down really smooth in the summer heat. If you can still find one of these on the shelf anywhere I would suggest grabbing it and saving it for next spring, although I am sure it is not easy to get your hands on one of...
