2007-07-24 11:46:00 If you ask people what they thought of this movie, they would probably reply in the positive. Listen to me, this is a very average movie. Four/fifths of it is school politics which is oh so dull and the last fifth is pretty much the same as all the others. It certainly doesn't have the magic and charm of the earlier books, and is nowhere as good as the last movie in the series, which in my opinion was the best. The acting is mostly terrible apart from Ron, Harry and Hermione. In particular the Weasley Twins and Seamus are beyond terrible. Direction was also pretty average. This is a JM THUMBS DOWN.

2007-07-21 08:11:00 I see that both Sandhya and Nike have already reviewed the movie but I havent read them yet because I don't want my review to be coloured by theirs.First thing I liked about the movie was the very first scene. The arrivals of the dementors was really heart-beat-stopping scary. I guess that might be mainly because myself and my friends were complaining at that time about how they had twisted the timeline of that particular scene and changed it to look like some tornado was coming after them. The dementors looked deadlier and meaner than the ones in POA. First round in favor of the movie.After that everything went wrong. The Figgs episode , the owls and howlers arriving et cetera were ignored. And Daniel Radcliffe just CANT act! Pathetic and very very disappointing! The entire book was about how harry matured emotionally and Dan looked clueless most of the time with a round-the-clock blank disgruntled look. ^%^&*. Anyways Dumbledore without his half-moon glasses looked bad. Lupin loo...

2007-07-20 12:29:00 Even in Asia, I managed to watch OOTP in English, yay! For me, the Harry Potter movies have never managed to bring the magic of the books onto the big screen and OOTP was no different. In terms of the plot, as usual, a ton of detail was cut out as more than seven hundred pages was squeezed into about two hours of screen time. Many things were changed to simplify the plot in order to shorten the movie. It wasn't cut down to the point of GOF where the movie did not have a complete plot and was more of a bunch of scenes from the movie stuck together as a companion for fans of the book. At the same time, however, there was so much cut out of OOTP that the magic of Hogwarts: the students, everyday life, Harry's interaction with his friends, etc. The main plot of the Harry Potter books is of course Harry vs Voldemort, but what makes fans everywhere get sucked in is how we can relate to Harry and through him, "live" at Hogwarts and do magic. The difficulty that has developed in creating these movies is that as the series progresses J. K. Rowling’s books have become substantially larger. The director has to decide what to keep in the movie and what to remove. David Yates has successfully removed a lot of the whining Harry did in the book that really slowed down the story and made Harry rather annoying. In this movie Harry finds himself isolated all summer long. He has not heard from his friends Ron and Hermione or Professor Dumbledore after ending the last school year facing Lord Voldemort and bringing Cedric Diggory’s dead body back to the school. And for some reason, the Harry Potter movie suddenly began to feel like a grown up movie which is a turn around considering that it started as a kid’s thing. Right?There was just too little in the movie. Probably they should extend the movie into a 3 hours one because 2 and a half hour just simply isn’t enough. Plus, I remembered the other 4 movies gave me this excitement when watching them, but this one doesn’t have that same effect.I think this movie is too depressing compare to the other 4. Although I do get why, since it was about Harry Potter’s mind being in contact with the Lord Voldermort himself, whom not a happy dude. However, there’s depressing and there’s too depressing. And this one is to level of disturbing. Not that it’s bad, only I’m assuming it wouldn’t go well with the little children. I was a fan of the movies before I read the books, but since I read the books, I appreciated those as well.The other four movies have not disappointed me, and I knew that this one would not. I saw OotP the day after it came out, and the two hours and eighteen minutes completely passed by. It followed the book very well, and I loved the performances from Imelda Staunton [Dolores Umbridge], and Michael Gambon [he got Dumbledore's personality from the book spot on]. Daniel Radcliffe [as Harry], does well, as always, but in this movie, you can see how much he's grown.Five out of five stars, and I can't wait for it to come out to DVD.

2007-07-17 18:38:00 Having finally watched Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire on Sunday, I couldn't wait to see the latest effort from the Harry Potter franchise, even though I wasn't too happy about Goblet. Expecting this new one to make the same mistakes, I was very surprised this time they actually did it right, making it the best Harry Potter film so far. Or at least, I think it is. I guess a lot has to do with director David Yates being in charge this time around, who made the lovely Girl In The Café just a couple of years ago. I'm very happy that he will also be directing Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince since this new one has a lot of great moments. Filled with excitement, buzzling with energy and having a very good and clear structure, eventually leading to a big climax at the Department of Mystification, this new Harry Potter finally feels like it really delivers.
