Harvard University and its Program of Education
2008-02-01 15:39:00
It’s extremely familiar and sobering actuality: Mom and Dad together work for years, squirreling away currency for their child’s college instruction. Other than when the time comes, they still have to valve retirement funds and have a loan of the home equity. For this reason Harvard University’s plan to radically add to student monetary support, announced previous week, was a welcome progress. It helps open up admission to higher education and ease the press on middle-class families from soaring college costs. Additional confidential colleges, particularly those with big endowments like Stanford University and Ivy League schools, should take strong steps in an analogous course, even if they can’t go to the degree that super-wealthy Harvard can. Harvard is boosting help further than the poorest families to a broad swath of middle-class ones. Beginning subsequently fall, the school will limit the quantity that families earning $120,000 to $180,000 a year wait...

New York Times and Harvard Miss the Point About News
2007-08-02 03:44:00
The New York Times reported a few weeks ago that "Young Adults Are Giving Newspapers Scant Notice" - this being the conclusion of a Harvard study which found "only 16 percent of the young adults surveyed aged 18 to 30 said that they read a newspaper every day and 9 percent of teenagers said that they did." This means kids "aren't acquiring the news habit," observed Thomas Patterson, the Harvard professor who conducted the survey.I think Patterson, Harvard, and, as per usual, The New York Times, are missing a crucial point: kids, teenagers, and young adults are getting their news on Digg, Netscape, Fark, and similar news sites.People under thirty not giving up on the news - they're giving up on outmoded ways of presenting it.Why read a newspaper, on paper or online, when you get headlines from hundreds of newspapers on Digg - in addition to blog posts and anything else with a url?Nor does this mean that newspapers are finished - they just have to think of themselves as something di...

Previous research only looked at singlebase pair changes among this study group.285 of the approximately 3,000 CNVs are already known to beassociated with disease, and copy number variations of some ofthese genes have been or are now being speculated as riskfactors for ailments such as AIDS, inflammatory bowel disease, lupus, cataracts, arterial disease andschizophrenia. One interesting observation that the researchers made during this study was that many of the CNVs havepopulation-specific characteristics and frequencies, which could expla...
