Hasselblad Phocus Beta Released
2008-04-01 20:17:00
A quick break from the Production Case Study we have been sharing the past few days to mention that Hasselblad has FINALLY released a beta of their new software "Phocus" for capturing and processing files taken with their cameras. We downloaded it yesterday and played around with it a bit. They have been promising this software since December and we have been anxiously awaiting it, despite the fact that it is still only a beta (test) version. The software takes on the look and workflow similar to Lightroom and Aperture although certainly not as extensive. But it also offers the ability to capture directly into it, which is still lacking in the other pieces of software. While this software is a VAST improvement over its predecessor FlexColor I have to say that after doing side by side comparisons I still prefer Lightroom despite its inability to tether to cameras. The workaround we use for the Canon's is to enable Lightroom's Auto Import Feature from a "watched" folder and t...

Hasselblad and Leica film cameras in gold
2008-03-03 05:55:00
This is an actual snapshot of a camera store in Frankfurt airport taken by Tim Bray. Just a couple of traditional film cameras. They aren’t new - Leica R4 was announced in 1980 - 28 years ago. They haven’t any megapixels at all. But they are very good optically even nowadays. And they have a ...
Hasselblad 500
2008-02-10 07:02:00
It's as simple as this : the first images of man on the moon and the Earth seen from space were captured with a Hasselblad 500EL. The moon cameras were motor-driven and conventional lubricants were replaced with a low-friction alternative, but they were otherwise largely the same as the commercial version.Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong's cameras are still up there in the moondust, but NASA and most of the top industrial and potrait photographers in the world still use Hasselblad 500s.Aside from its illustrious history, the Hasselblad is a truly fine piece of tech. It was one of the first system cameras, which means its primary components - lens, viewfinder, cranking knob and film back - are interchangeable for flexibility. Because it uses medium-format film, the captured image is physically larger and allows for more efficient cropping in the darkroom - the square shots mean you can also crop to either potrait or landscape. It uses Carl Zeiss lenses with built-in leaf shutters and...

New Hasselblad Equipment
2007-10-31 00:59:00
Well after some product research and a demo for the Hasselblad rep we finally felt it was the right time to get the latest high-end medium format camera. So about 4 weeks ago we got the Hasselblad H3D II. It's a 39 megapixel camera with some amazing glass! It came with an 80mm (normal) lens, but in addition we picked up the 28mm, the 120 macro, and the 50-110 zoom as well as the pro shade, some extra batteries, and a new tripod and head. I tell you, we could make a lot more money if we did not have to keep investing in all of this expensive equipment! With wrapping up some projects and printing new portfolios and promos we have not even had a chance to shoot a single frame on the system but we'll definitely share our thoughts with you once we start!

Digital Cameras: 39 Megapixel Hasselblad H3D Goes to Mark II
2007-09-19 12:05:00
Digital Cameras: 39 Megapixel Hasselblad H3D Goes to Mark IIWhile a $37K DSLR is out of the range of even most of our dreams, there is some tech here to be admired beyond the 39MP, 48x36mm sensor it shares with last year's v1.0 of the H3D. (So similar otherwise, it shares the same press photo, apparently.) Firstly, it gains a 3-inch LCD, a top-line RAW converter, a heatsink attached to the CCD that lowers the temp of the system, which they claim helps reduce noise. Strangely, it also features an integrated GPS for geotagging images, and software on the desktop allows you to map your shots out on Google Earth for flybys of your photos. Weird, and appropriate for the pro who also happens to read Robb Report at $37K. Wannabes who don't need the camera's 5412x7212 pixel shots can opt for the H3D-31II and 22II for with 31 and 22MP respectively. Suddenly, my beloved Canon doesn't feel so good in my hands.(Via Gizmodo.)

Hasselblad H3 vs. Phase One P45 vs. Canon 1Ds Mark II
2007-06-20 22:44:00
At the risk of scaring some folks away right off the bat, I wanted to share some insights with you about a camera demo that we recently had here. I will emphatically state before I get started though that although this topic may be directed at the higher end professional photographers out there, this by no means is an indicator of the tone of future posts. I am really hopping to address a huge range of topics from simple to complex. So even if you have what seems to be the most basic of questions… I hope you’ll ask them! So … last week we had Jeff Payne, a rep from Hasselblad, and Ken Dethloff from the Pro Department at Samy’s Pasadena come over to the studio to give us a demo of the Hasselblad H3. They also brought along an H2 with a Phase One P45 back. For those of you not familiar with these cameras and backs, they are medium format digital camera / back combinations both having a 39 Megapixel resolution and their cost is in the $30K - $50K range f...

In the past, many professional photographers have shied away from auto-focus cameras, complaining that the slow speed of the auto-focus let valuable shots slip away. Quite often it was simply quicker, not to mention more reliable, to focus manually. The Hasselblad H1 645AF, however, offers lightning fast, super-accurate focusing under almost any conditions, guaranteeing that ...
