Haven Caister Holiday Park
2008-06-25 17:15:00
Went to Norfolk a couple of weeks ago using the points from Walker's Brit Trips... however they forgot to deduct the points so I still have a shedload to use. I have been fascinated with panoramic photos for a while, but have never shot one. The plan is to shoot 'regular' ones like this but also to try some 360 degree interactive panoramas, when I get hold of a panoramic tripod head. However, this was shot handheld from the top of a sand dune and stitched using Autopano. It is comprised of 10 shots, all portrait. There is a little distortion going on, but, overall, not a bad test. The trouble with posting shots mainly at 900px wide inevitably means this panoramic looks a bit small, so, to see it larger, click HERE.

Hogs Haven needs your help
2008-05-21 20:18:00
The good news is that I've attained gainful employment in my summer home and now will no longer need to sweat the passing days as inching closer and closer towards personal financial insolvency. Many thanks to the Federal Government for partially subsidizing my lifestyle for the past few weeks (but they'll get theirs back when I repay loans, don't you worry Uncle Sam). The bad news is that with this new J-O-B I won't be in a position to post at the hours. So for all those reader(s) who have grown accustomed to my poorly drafted and randomly timed (though typically during the working hours) posts, this could mean content comes at even stranger times in less consistent bunches. I'm not yet certain how I will adjust returning to the old 8-5 though we're all adaptable animals and I hope it works for the best. I don't know what TexSkins or the other contributors schedule will permit in the way of posting, but I assume it will be much of the same. In order to both secure more frequ...

Hey, listen, I was wondering, if you're not doing anything, if maybe, you know, you might want to share some links. With me, I mean. No big deal. no pressure. Just a couple of people hanging out and looking at stoopid stuff on the web. We'll have a few laughs, and if anything more happens, well, we'll just let it happen. So what do you say? If you're curious about the structure and contradictions of anthropomorphic species hierarchy in the PBS animated series Arthur, then the Journal of Cartoon Over-analyzations is for you. You can play it safe and get something generic tattooed on your body, like a yin-yang or a Celtic cross. Or you can run against the wind and etch a Bob Seger tattoo permanently into your flesh. Rock 'n' roll isn't the only thing that never forgets. NSFW language department: Gawker rounds up 10 of the best on-camera meltdowns. Hogs Haven selects Chilo Rachal
2008-04-21 18:50:00
First and foremost, make sure you check out all the info provided on the site's new layout here. The information there is clutch and should assist you all in navigating this brave new world we call Hogs Haven. Second, I was out and about this weekend which conveniently freed me of all accountability in the SB Nation Mock Draft. Duties were left to the extremely competent -- and probably more qualified on draft related matters anyways -- TexSkins, who went with Chilo Rachal, offensive guard out of USC. TexSkin's reasoning went, in part, something like this: Basically, we took the best player on the board who happens to fill a need.  If he doesn't start right away, he will be starting either by the end of the year or going into next season and should fill one of the two G spots for a long time.  He still has an upside and I see him being a very good G for the Redskins for a very long time. Works for me; offensive line is one of our major needs. If I had it to do al...
Welcome to the new Hogs Haven and SB Nation

[Note by Skin Patrol, 04/21/08 12:40 PM EDT ] Thanks again to Trei for setting us up. If you have any questions, please follow the contact info below or email me at hogshaven@yahoo.com. There are too many awesome new features to mention now, and Trei covers most of them, but I want to stress two for the moment: Autosave on posts, comments, and etc. which will greatly decrease the likelihood that I suffer stress related heart attacks in the future, and integrated stats. You will now be able to accses all the info about players that you would have formerly needed to check from an NFL.com. That is the business. We'll be exploring this together so stay with me. Some of the changes are dramatic and will take some getting used to. Remember that, perhaps moreso than any of you, I was married to the old format for about a year and a half. I'm always reluctant to change but appreciate that this is an upgrade that took an enormous amount of work and was effected for my benefit. One of the a...

Mock Draft round 2: Hogs Haven needs YOU
2008-04-17 23:26:00
TexSkins thinks we're going to be picking in the SB Nation Mock Draft sometime around Saturday, so it's time to start thinking about who we should select. He produced this list of possible moves: I think we need to go DL, OL, or WR.  That's pretty obvious.  Some names I've got: DL  Ellis (DE) (Va Tech) Jackson (DE) (USC) Bryant (DT) (A&M) Okam (DT) (UT) OL Rachal (G) (USC) Schuening (G) (Oregon St.) WR Hardy (Indiana) Add your own in the comments section, with justifications. A somewhat current list of the players taken thus far is on the left hand sidebar of Mocking the Draft. I really feel like holding out for Jordy Nelson in the 3rd round, though in a phone conversation TexSkins suggested the idea of taking Nelson early just to make sure, and I wasn't totally against it. Hardy would make a fine receiver, too. I like anyone high on the O-Line list and though I'm personally more inclined to take a DE than a DT, word is that Greg Blache really wants an inter...

Hogs Haven solicits emails for now on
2008-04-13 20:06:00
[editor's note, by Skin Patrol] Last week I wrote a post about Redskins cap guru Eric Schaffer being swooned over by the Saints (we retained him). I received more than one email about that post -- I don't think that's ever happened before -- suggesting that Eric Schaffer was a good bit better at his job than I was giving him credit for. I was trying, unsuccessfully, to suggest that indeed he was better than the team's financial reputation and the fact that the Saints sough him (action is greater than) spoke more highly of him than anything the likes of me or others have written about the team's financial situation (mere words). More importantly, though, is that I keep pounding this podium called Hogs Haven swearing the same tired cap rubric about how restructures are wrong, dead cap hits are wrong, etc. etc. when in fact there are more than a few ways to skin a salary cap and I certainly don't have a monopoly on cap methodology. In fact I'm not a cap expert at all. I know ver...
GM?s next big thing, or haven?t we been here before? [Opinion]
2008-04-11 23:21:00
GM?s next big thing, or haven?t we been here before? [Opinion] If Pontiac?s Holden import, the G8 isn?t already at a dealership near you, it soon will be. But is this Zeta platform-derived sedan the savior that many of GM?s faithful are hoping it to be? During a ride and drive through the far reaches of suburbs and countryside near Atlanta, Georgia, we had a chance to reacquaint ourselves with the ?thunda from down unda? on a route ranging from mildly twisting mountain roads to long interstate straightaways. It is an impressive vehicle. But one that we take issues with on several levels. The G8 GT is a good-looking car. Damn good-looking. Aggressive styling brings back the muscular poses of Pontiacs from years gone by. We can do without the boy racer hood scoops that are all show but no go. Let?s call them a styling exercise. They will carry their own weight in the upcoming G8 GXP, but for now, they are poseurs. The 6-liter V8 with its 385 lb-ft of torque is a stron...
A haven for building a custom Skateboard
2008-04-11 21:32:00
The first skateboard I ever bought was blue 24 inch hard plastic board with metal wheels, learning to ride my new skateboard was as difficult as you can imagine.  Then after a year or scraping the blue plastic, my friends turned me on to building my skate board. We went down to a skate board shop, cannot remember the name of it and bought the different pieces of a skateboard and put them together.  My first custom skateboard was a pre-drilled wood laminated Alva board with cushion trucks and urethane wheels. Man what a difference a real skateboard will make.  I road that skateboard for many years until I wore it out.Now a days you can order a custom skateboard online and configure your entire board, some very cool stuff.  The folks at Warehouse Skateboards are kinda like skateboard haven, they can fix you up with a tool for building a custom skateboard.  During the custom setup  pick your brand/type of skateboard, maybe some Destructo trucks, add your w...

Hogs Haven selects Aqib Talib, Cornerback out of Kansas
2008-04-08 03:31:00
It was a tough call between Talib and Brandon Albert, as compelling cases were made for both players form the peanut gallery. I want to express my deepest appreciation to all reader(s) who helped us make the pick, and know that your input was the driving force to the selection. Personally, I have some serious questions about Aqib Talib and consider him a stretch in the first round... but I'm usually wrong, so that bodes well for the young man. The pick is up at Mocking The Draft with both mine and TexSkin's thoughts (mine open, his begin at "From there, we move to the stats, measurables, and all the other fun stuff....") on Talib and why he might be the right pick there. I want to note quickly, before you go over there, that as the players have been selected they have added their name to that team's jersey, their number being the pick they were selected with. As you can imagine, I wasn't terribly comfortable with the idea of having someone else's name on a #21 jersey, but I kno...

Hogs Haven Reader Mock Draft #1
2008-03-31 03:29:00
[editor's note, by Skin Patrol] Promoted to the front page because I want to encourage reader(s) to do additional mock drafts. I very much appreciate Justin taking the time to do this and hope others will as well. I want to get as much feedback and info as possible on who the team should draft, so that TexSkins and I can correctly draft in the upcoming SB Nation Mock Draft. Enjoy, edited slightly but not substantively. Well, since it appears that my next post won't be for about two weeks I figured ot do my first mock early, then another in mid-April.  Some of this stuff may seem a bit unorthodox or downright strange...but the draft is just that every year, to some degree. One Year of the Pet Haven
2008-03-28 14:46:00
This week marks the one year anniversary of The Pet Haven Blog. I started this blog amidst the pet food recalls and crisis, as I was a pet owner concerned, frustrated and ticked-off at how the whole thing occurred. I couldn't believe how poorly the pet food companies handled the whole thing...from lies to denials to taking forever to take the product off the shelves. It was definitely not a lesson in good crisis management. Now here I am a year later, still blogging about a variety of topics within the pet world. The blog has taken me in several different directions, and although it's not always as focused on one type of subject as maybe a blog should be, it has allowed me to look at various things within the pet industry; including the good, the bad, and the very ugly. This blog has become a forum for all things pets. From news, to product reviews, to resources, to fun stuff, to pictures of my pets, and more. I hope everyone enjoys reading it as much as I enjoy writing it. I...

Leona Lewis Goes Where British Women Haven?t Been in 20 Years
2008-03-27 19:59:00
The stunning British singer, Leona Lewis, was discovered on the TV talent show, X Factor, and after experiencing wild success on the other side of the pond, she has now come to the United States to conquer the pop charts here. And, she's been successful, with her single, "Bleeding Love," hitting the number one spot--a feat not accomplished by a British female artist in over twenty years. Curly-haired Leona is projected to surpass the record sales of the troubled-yet-talented British singer Amy Winehouse, whose Back to Black album debuted at #7 in the U.S. charts. Leona's already got an appearance on Oprah under her belt, where she was introduced by X Factor judge Simon Cowell to the talk show audience, and received a standing ovation after her performance of her single. Hmm, she's beautiful, appears humble, has the number one single and just got the nod of approval from Oprah. I think she might do OK for herself. Photos: BauerGriffinOnline.com
