Toshiba begins shipping HD-A20 HD DVD player
2007-04-13 00:00:00 As promised, Toshiba is shipping the HD-A20 to retailers with a MSRP of $499, but can probably be found online for even less. The HD-A20 fits right in the middle of Toshiba's trio of HD DVD players, which make up all of the stand alone HD DVD players available. The extra benjamin over the HD-A2 gets you HDMI 1.3 and 1080p output, but it lacks a few video enhancements like deep color support and additional connections like RS-232 when compared with its bigger brother, the HD-XA2. If this is any indication of what we can expect from second generation HD DVD players, Toshiba is on its way to producing some of the best next-gen physical media movie players anywhere -- at least until Blu-ray finally gets BD-J live done in October.

2007-03-16 00:00:00 With nearly 100 HD DVD/Blu-ray rips out and about it seems to remind me of the early days of DVD ripping where it was hard to get them to work on various software packages. Sahara HD DVD
2007-02-26 17:45:02 Sahara (IMDb) (Yabse collection) I cannot believe I am going to admit this but I have watched this movie over 30 times. There is something about the soundtrack and cinematography that I really enjoy. Having Penelope Cruz in the flick does not hurt either. This is the kind of movie that you must forgo all sense of reality and enjoy the silly fun.

51GB HD DVD-ROM Disc
2007-02-20 13:13:02 Toshiba has developed a triple-layer HD DVD-ROM (read only) disc with a capacity of 51 gigabytes. The new disc can store up to 7 hours of high-definition video and adds an extended capacity, high-end option to the already extensive line-up of HD DVD-ROM discs. Toshiba aims to secure approval of the new disc by the DVD Forum within this year. The new ROM disc has a three-layer structure, with each layer storing 17GB of data. The advances capacity over current ROM discs, which hold 15GB of data in each layer of a single-sided disc. Continued improvement in disc mastering technology has achieved further minimization in the recording pit, supporting a further boost in capacity to 17GB in single layer and a full 51GB on a single-sided triple-layer disc. Toshiba has confirmed the disc structure and its successful operation. The new disc shares the same disc structure as standard DVD and previously announced HD DVD formats: two 0.6-mm thick discs bonded back-to-back. This time-tested physi...
Toshiba HD DVD-R Laptop
2007-02-20 13:13:02 In late February in Japan, Toshiba will begin selling its first laptop PC in the world with support for the write-once HD DVD-R optical disc format. The computer is based on an Intel Corp. 2GHz Core 2 Duo processor and has a 17-inch wide-screen display with 1,920 x 1,280 pixel resolution, which means it can show high-definition images from HD DVD movie discs. The 4.8-kg machine also features a 320G-byte hard-disk drive, digital TV tuner and HDMI (high definition multimedia interface) output. Toshiba hasn’t announced a price for the computer, which will run the Windows Vista Home Premium operating system. International launch plans were not announced. Processing Keys found for HD DVD & Blu-ray - What does that mean?
2007-02-20 05:33:02 Two days ago, arnezami over at Doom9.org discovered the processing keys used on both HD DVD and Blu-ray. See this thread (Doom9). What exactly does this mean? In a nutshell, this key could be used to decrypt every single HD DVD and Blu-ray on the market today. Not only that, but there is chance (although very slight) that this key may not be revocable. This news has been floating about for two days now on several sites but I wanted to wait for additional information and possibly an explanation to help the process for us mere mortals. It now looks like arnezami is working on something. From arnezami (about an hour ago): i’m working on something. Please have patience. I need to take time to put it all together and make it comprehensible for everyone (given my available time this could take a couple of days). You’ve got pretty much everything right. The role of the Processing Key will be explained

All Bluray Disc and HD DVD Encryption Defeated by Single Key
2007-02-19 06:25:02 On Sunday, a Doom9 forum poster named "arnezami" presented the next great breakthrough in HD DVD and Bluray Disc decryption. Previously, every HD movie needed its own unique key in order to be decrypted; but with arnezami's discovery, there is one key to rule them all at least for now, until the Advanced Access Content System Licensing Administrator gets on it.

HD DVD and Blu-Ray Battle for the Hearts and Minds…of the Porn Indust
2007-02-13 06:58:01 The LA Times ran an interesting article yesterday (free registration required) about how the San Fernando porn industry is being courted by higher-ups in both the Blu-Ray (Sony and Disney) and HD DVD (Toshiba and Microsoft) camps in an attempt to win the upcoming format war. The logic behind such a move is that the porn industry was instrumental in solidifying VHS as the format back in the 80s by producing their videos on VHS rather than Betamax. The most interesting part of the article isn’t necessarily the decision to court a multi-billion dollar industry, but rather the covert tactics employed by the Blu-Ray camp in their courting. Whereas HD DVD has already been embraced by the industry (with many distributors already producing discs using the format), Blu-Ray is having a much more difficult time getting its foot in the door. Both Sony and Walt Disney, the two largest corporations behind Blu-Ray, have gone on record explicitly stating their opposition to the use of their t...

Digital Video Essential HD DVD coming soon.
2007-02-10 23:29:04 The folks over at VideoEssentials.com have announced that the final street date for the HD DVD version of Digital Video Essential will be Feb 27 (2007). If you really want to calibrate your HD set to almost perfection then you really need to get this disc. The D-Theater 1080i version is by far the best calibration tool you can get short of a full ISF calibration so the HD DVD will be a pleasure to have since most of you probably don’t even know what D-Theater is, let alone own a D-VHS deck (talk about a dying format).

A Rant Against Blu-ray vs. HD DVD
2007-02-09 03:24:06 Wayde Robson may not know whether Blu-ray or HD DVD is better, but he does think that Blu-ray wasn't made with the consumer in mind. Wayde goes on a rant, claiming Sony lured in more support from the studios because they made their format more studio-friendly in terms of DRM and content protection. Then he says Sony really doesn't have the consumer in mind, being that they're both a media and a content company. He makes no claims that HD DVD is better, just that if Sony wins the format war, things may get ugly for the rest of us not wearing thousand dollar suits. – Jason Chen Blu-ray and Sony - Does the Consumer Win? Blu-ray and HD DVD Hacked Already
2007-02-07 13:02:02 There’s a hole in the copyright protection for Blu-ray and HD DVD movies that you could drive a truck through. The funny thing is, it’s an alarmingly easy and obvious hack: Print Screen. Sure, you’d have to hit Print Screen and save each one for days to capture the thousands of frames that make up one HD movie, but it’s no big deal to automate this process and then stack the frames up, and there you have it?a near-perfect pixel-for-pixel copy of the Luddite movie studios’ buried treasure. According to German computer magazine CT, Toshiba acknowledged the vulnerability and vowed that it would be plugged up with the next release of DVD player software. But still. We can only laugh when we recall the interminable demos where smug Blu-ray and HD DVD hucksters blathered on about how it was impossible to hack their invulnerable copy protection. You can’t lock down eyeballs. Information wants to be free, and this is just the first crack in those walls ...
Blu-ray vs. HD DVD - The gloves are off!
2007-02-01 12:53:00 Many people remember the struggles of Beta-max and VHS, VHS ultimately winning over the crowd just as the DVD era came forth and made VHS a thing of the past. Now a new battle is ensuing and it will be a very memorable battle. The sexy Playstation 3 has taken sides, of course, with Blu-ray and will help solidify a position with the younger generation; it will definitely push millions of Blu-ray sales. While Microsoft’s Xbox is hitting back on both fronts, adding HD capability to their console and hitting the personal computer industry as well. The question is will either one win out? Will technological change occur to quickly in the ensuing months causing DVD’s to become extinct, buried in the dirt with the VHS? Whatever the problem is certain companies are taking an indifferent stand. NVIDIA is one such company. Creating technology that can play both Blu-ray and HD-DVDs! If their product is successful and it merges with a popular DVD player, what will happen to the two competi...
LG Combo Player - Blue-Ray/HD DVD!
2007-01-24 04:37:04 LG had announced that it would release its Blu-Ray/HD DVD Combo player in the first quarter of 2007. Further reports say that it is expected to hit the markets on Feb 4th. The player lacks support for HDi and could pose a problem for LG. There is a slight rumor that Toshiba will be sued by the DVD forum for its standalone player. As long as it all plays in the favor of the consumer, these rackets will continue to happen. Best Buy employees are the people by whom the date has been announced. No word on the pricing of this combo player.

Hackers Claim HD DVD Encryption Circumvented
2006-12-29 01:00:04 BackupHDDVD may be this generations DeCSS This article was first published on HWUpgrade.com It hasn?t been completely verified yet, but a user named “muslix64″ has posted an exploit in a thread on the Doom9 forum claiming he has been able to circumvent AACS, the encoding format used to protect HD DVD and Blu-ray content. “Muslix64″ claims to have completely backed up an HD DVD movie and provides a Rapidshare link to download BackupHDDVD, a small Java-based utility that aids users to backup their HD DVDs. A YouTube link to see the program in action has also been posted. “Muslix64″ describes the utility as “a java based command line utility that decrypt video files (.evo) from a HD DVD disk that you own, to your hard drive and you can play them back with a HD DVD player software.” Although much of the dirty work in backing up an HD DVD movie is done by the tool, users are still required to find their own cryptographic keys for the disc b...
