Hedging a Canadian Stock Portolio with a Double Inverse ETF
2008-05-14 22:45:00
I received an email a few days ago from a reader who asked about hedging a portfolio, specifically using HXD which is the Horizons BetaPro S&P/TSX 60 Bear Plus Fund. What a mouthful! For those who are not familiar with double and double inverse ETFs, essentially they provide 200% of the daily performance of an underlying index which in this case is the S&P/TSX 60 index. (Click here to read a more in-depth description I wrote a while back) The regular Bull ETF will return 2% when the S&P/TSX60 is up 1%, and will return -2% when the index is down 1%.The Bear version gives you 200% of the inverse performance so if the S&P/TSX is up 1%, the Bear ETF IS DOWN 2%. If the index is down 1%, the Bear ETF is UP 2%.Here is the original email:I enjoy your blog and wonder if you would consider a column on the ins and outs of using a hedge (notional or formal) to reduce investment risk. A concrete example might be based on a primary investment in the TSX index with a hedge using th...

Hedging Forex Strategy
2008-04-13 17:37:00
Currency hedging refers to a strategy that strives to minimize the exposure to exchange rate fluctuations, thereby minimizing the uncertainty of future transactions denominated in a foreign currency and providing some stability to earnings and cash flow. This is typically accomplished through the use of options or futures contracts. Forward contracts can also be used to hedge currency risk. However, while forward contracts are superior to futures in terms of their overall risk reduction, there is no central market for forward contracts, which contributes to higher transaction costs and lower liquidity, as well as counterparty risk (i.e. the risk that the contract will not be honoured at expiration). When a business chooses to hedge its exposure to foreign currency, the objective is to minimize uncertainty, not to maximize profit from currency speculation. A hedged position will therefore not produce the benefit of a favourable exchange rate movement, but at the same time will no...
Hedging Against Dollar Declines Through Gold Posted By : Jet Lee
2008-03-30 16:44:00
The media, and even the network TV shows, have begun reporting the price of gold regularly. For almost 20 years, between 1980 and 2000, the gold price was hardly mentioned. There was no interest, and the price was either falling or remaining steady. The tax laws can be incredibly complicated to understand, especially for the Small Business Owner like yourself. How can you be expected to run your business AND keep up with all the tax rules and regulations? That's why over the years I've discovered many tax-saving strategies that will reduce your tax bill each and every year. These "strategies" are not difficult to understand, nor are they hard to implement.

As you said, it would definitely be a mistake to get an MBA without work experience first; it won't help you get into finance at all if you go to a lower-tier school. The Master's program you mention will not give you a significant advantage; although it is at a good school, it's not equivalent to an MBA.

Futures, Options and hedging

If your first thought is – Options and value investing …what a combination? You are not alone. You will rarely find discussions on options and derivatives in books and articles on value investing. But then just because most value investors don’t talk about options, does not mean one should not even try to understand them. That said, let me clarify – I am not an expert, heck not even a novice on options. I have read a few books on options and derivatives, bought a few here and there. However I am planning to read up more on options and understand them better – it would improve my understanding of probability. Most of the discussions I have seen on options is around the strike price. A lot of investors look at options as leveraged bets on the stock price. It goes like this – Lets assume I am bullish on L&T (who isn’t :) !).The current price is around 2500 (for argument sake). I expect it to rise by 20% in the next 6 months. So instead of investing 250000 and making 20%...
Inverse ETFs: Hedging risk
2008-01-31 07:00:00
For those who wish to hedge their portfolios against downside risk, Nate Pile (ccount/click.php?id=1710) suggests a pair of ETFs that benefit from a market decline. Here is the latest from his Nate's Notes (ccount/click.php?id=1710)."Alt-hough I would argue that much of the potential bad news has already been factored into stock prices, one of the mantras I have come to respect over the years is 'don’t find the trend'… and the trend is currently down. "Thus, I believe it would be foolish to not take at least a few cautionary steps with regards to protecting our portfolios until it becomes more clear just how bad things are going to get. "As a result, I am recommending two 'short fund' ETFs as short-term investments -- ProShares UltraShort Dow30 (quote.htm?sym=dxd) (ASE: DXD (quote.htm?sym=dxd)) and the ProShares UltraShort QQQ (quote.htm?sym=qid) (ASE: QID (quote.htm?sym=qid)). Hedging strategy for weak USD.

Last week General Electric (GE) released good results which met expectations. Infrastructure business unit grew its profit by 26% in forth quarter. This segment makes up 40% of GE total earnings.More than 50 percent of GE revenues now coming from outside the U.S.Still strong global demand and weak USD are major factors which are helping US companies with international focus. The question is if this is already reflected in stock prices. But investment to exporters and multinationals is still smart play.Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) is getting amazing 70% of revenues from abroad. Also among mid size cap we can find companies with international exposure more that 50%. For example NCR (NCR) which with revenue rise 12% in last quarter. As they announced one quarter came from favourable USD depreciation. Company is leader in automatic teller machines and this unit contributed by 17% mainly due to strong demand coming from Asia and Europe.Another interesting mid size caps with foreign revenues mor...

Broad market indices are very volatile nowadays. Mostly dragging down by negative news in credit market. There are many ways how to hedge your portfolio. Either investment in bonds or commodities or just going short with shares.Except of those there is also currency hedging. Japanese Yen has really strong correlation to broad market indices. With major US benchmarks it is about -0,95. Meaning if Nasdaq drops 1% Japanese Yen strengthens 1% against USD. On the picture you can see exactly this correlation with Nasdaq index for last 6 months. Yen had strengthened during August's sell off and also reached one year high during November. In addition to futures you can use currency ETF iShares Yen trust (FXY) for investment to Yen. For leverage, options are available for FXY and also for Yen FX index (YUK). http://stockweb.blogspot.com/at-om.xml

Hedging Your SUV
2007-10-31 15:13:00
It’s hard to believe with oil approaching $100 per barrel, but the U.S. will consume over 1 billion (that’s 1,000,000,000) more gallons of gasoline in 2007 than in 2006. As a certain President once said, we are energy junkies.  We keep craving more regardless of the price.   Ask yourself this: Are you plugging more stuff into the wall each year? That requires even more oil, natural gas or coal. China, India and the other new economies also consume more energy each year.  Political instability in Nigeria, Iran, and Venezuela could limit supply. And, there’s only so much oil (natural gas and coal) in the ground. I’m not suggesting we’ll run out but it will become more expensive to extract it.   How can you ease the pain every time you fill up? Or better, how can you benefit from higher energy prices? By investing in energy companies. There are two ways to do this. You can bu...
Is There Such A Thing As Hedging in the Forex Market
2007-10-25 14:45:00
Just like hedging your bet at the horse track you can hedge your trading in the Forex Market. What is the Forex Market: The Forex and the stock market have some similarities, in that it involves buying and selling to make a profit, but there are some differences. Unlike the stock market, the Forex has a higher liquidity. This means, a lot more money is changing hands everyday. Another key difference when comparing the Forex to the stock market is that the Forex has no place where it is exchanged and it never closes. The Forex involved trading between banks and brokers all over the world and provides twenty-four hour access during the business week. For those who are not familiar with the Forex market, the word “hedging” could mean absolutely nothing. However, those who are regular traders know that there are many ways to use this term in trading. Most of the time when you hear this phrase it means that you are trying to reduce your risk in trading. It is something that everyone wh...

The Art of Hedging in Options Trading by Richard CochraneA hedge is an investment made to offset the risk incurred by entering another investment. Essentially you are setting up a bet on both sides so that one offsets the other and you can end up winning either way.Think of it as a form of insurance.Options are frequently used in hedging. For example, you can speculate that the market price will rise in the future and buy a call today. But, because the market is uncertain and you're not certain it will rise, you simultaneously buy a put option.By carefully selecting the appropriate combinations of strike price, expiration date and type of option an investor can minimize risk and maximize the probability of making a profit. So how does it all work?Well let's take a look at a common hedging strategy: the Strangle. In this strategy, an investor holds both call and put options with the same maturity, but with different strike prices. The contracts are purchased 'out of the money' and ar...
Forbes quant: Hedging with ETFs
2007-08-08 18:30:00
“Volatility is back on Wall Street,” says Vahan Janjigian, a leading quantitative analyst and editor of The Forbes Growth Investor. Here, the advisors looks at ETFs as downside hedges. “There were 21 trading days in July. The range between the Dow’s high and low exceeded 100 points on 13 of those days. It exceeded 200 points on six days. Traders love this kind of market. It gives them plenty of opportunity to make quick profits by jumping in and out of stocks. “Long term buy-and-hold investors, however, may not pay much attention. They should. Rising volatility can sometimes signal a major turning point in the market. In 2003 it signaled the start of a bull market. “Today, it may be telling us just the opposite. Rising volatility means investors are getting nervous. They no longer feel confident about the market’s overall direction. “Of course, much of the current volatility is being blamed on woes in the sub-prime mortgage market and ...

Hedging with short ETFs
2007-03-08 15:12:00
Expert trader Elliott Gue suggests looking at ?short ETFs? as an easy way for investors to hedge their long portfolios. In his The Energy Strategist newsletter, he explains the strategy. ?Although shorting has become progressively cheaper and easier to do in recent years, many traders are either prohibited from shorting (such as within IRA accounts) or uncomfortable with the strategy. Enter the short ETF. ?Basically, when you buy these ETFs, they give you exposure to the short side of the underlying index. If you purchase the Short QQQ Fund (AMEX: PSQ), you?re effectively shorting the Nasdaq 100 index. ?ETFs trade on the major exchanges just like stocks. They're simple to buy and sell. Your broker should charge you no more to buy these ETFs than to purchase any other stock. "If you buy the UltraShort QQQ (AMEX: QID), you?re effectively double shorting the Nasdaq. If the Nasdaq 100 falls 10%, the UltraShort QQQ ETF could be expected to rise in value by roughly 20%. ?There?s als...

Forex hedging
2007-02-07 08:32:00
Put two rookie traders in front of the screen, provide them with your best high-probability set-up, and for good measure, have each one take the opposite side of the trade. More than likely, both will wind up losing money. However, if you take two pros and have them trade in the opposite direction of each other, quite frequently both traders will wind up making money - despite the seeming contradiction of the premise. What's the difference? What is the most important factor separating the seasoned traders from the amateurs? The answer is money management. Like dieting and working out, money management is something that most traders pay lip service to, but few practice in real life. The reason is simple: just like eating healthy and staying fit, money management can seem like a burdensome, unpleasant activity. It forces traders to constantly monitor their positions and to take necessary losses, and few people like to do that. However, as Figure 1 proves, loss-taking is crucial to lo...
