2007 Heisman: what do they mean by ?best player,? anyway?
2007-12-09 17:58:00 First, congratulations, Tim Tebow. You had a great year. Now, a little context. The Heisman Trophy is allegedly awarded each year to the nation’s “most outstanding college football player.” The Heisman has been awarded 73 times. 27 of the recipients have been quarterbacks. 41 times the winner was a running back. On four occasions the winner was an end/receiver. Only once has the winner been a primarily defensive player - Charles Woodson of Michigan in 1997. And it’s unlikely he’s have won if it weren’t for the fact that he was an impact kick returner who also played some on the offensive side of the ball. To put this point a little differently, no player has ever won the award unless he played an offensive skill position. 36 winners - almost half - hail from just 13 rich programs: Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Miami, Michigan, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Texas, Southern Cal and Wisconsin. So, a purely defensive ...

TSF Heisman Watch
2007-11-19 23:29:00 This has been anything but the standard Heisman Race. I'd like to weigh in quickly with what has become increasingly obvious to me over the last few weeks.Coming into the week I really liked Dennis Dixon to win. I even watched this commercial profusely taking great entertainment from it:With my top candidate Dennis Dixon out of contention, how many legitimate players are out there that can satisfy that general voter urge to choose a contender from a highly-ranked squad? Here's what I see:I'm reluctant to say it but i see Time Tebow as the front-runner to win the Heisman right now...even with 3 losses! In the midst of a roller-coaster ride of a season I think voters are just starting to warm up to the idea of the underclassman winning it with 3 losses. Tebow is set to go down with Archie Griffin in Heisman lore. That's good for Tebow, good for the Heisman and good for college football. If he wins I don't think that automatically means that we'll start seeing underclassmen win i...

OJ Simpson – Heisman Trophy Winner, NFL Star, Murderer, Goes For A New Aw
2007-11-15 02:55:00 Not content with his over 10 year old NFL record for most people killed in a single evening, the Juice is now headed back to trial on a litany of charges stemming from an armed robbery that occurred in Las Vegas last September the 13th. Simpson, is accused of participating in a Las Vegas casino hotel room hold up with a gang of gun-toting men and seizing sports memorabilia worth an estimated $100,000. If convicted OJ Simpson faces the potential of Life behind bars, and that is going to ruin his golf handicap. Judge Joe Bonaventure after listening to 4 days of sometimes incredulous claims and counterclaims, attacks on witnesses credibility, and downright stupidity, has determined that there is enough evidence to order Simpson to trial. This decision should not should not be a surprise to anyone except maybe OJ himself. You only get one Judge Ito in a lifetime! With Las Vegas as the backdrop, and a cast of stars even more than bizarre that the likes of Mark Fuhrman, Cato Kalin, and ...

Troy Smith wins Heisman Trophy by landslide
2006-12-10 06:42:01 Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith won the Heisman Trophy today by the second largest margin ever. Smith beat out Arkansas running back Darren McFadden and Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn. Only O.J. Simpson’s 1,750-point victory in 1968 was more onesided than Smith’s. “I haven’t spent that much time dreaming about it,” Smith said of winning the Heisman. “But I’ll be dreaming about it tonight. It’s pretty cool.” The senior moved to the front of the Heisman race in September with a flawless performance against Texas and finished off a perfect regular season by throwing four touchdown passes against Michigan. The 22-year-old Smith is the sixth player from Ohio State to win the Heisman and first since tailback Eddie George in 1995. And it’s the school’s seventh Heisman — Archie Griffin won two in 1974-75 — tying Notre Dame and Southern California for the most. Troy Smith was deserving of the award but the He... |
