2009-08-05 12:00:00
Unless you're a serious fitness fanatic, you probably don't think of bicycle or sport helmets as exactly fashionable. It's for this reason that so many people choose to go without, risking head injury. Yakkay offers a unique brand of helmets that don't look like what you'd expect!
Why Don't Car Drivers Wear Helmets?
2009-05-22 18:49:00
Its an interesting question. I'm looking for some intelligent answers from engineers. Is there a reason not to, or a reason to..? I thought the likelihood of a head injury is pretty high if one is involved in an accident while inside a vehicle. So why aren't drivers wearing helmets? Is this somethi
Riding Helmets: They're Hot, But They're Not Hot Enough
2009-04-01 05:07:00
Reading through commentary in Horse.com's helmet law polls, most horseback riders were opposed to a helmet law, often citing things like "Helmets are too hot," but others claiming, "I would wear one if it was more stylish, " aka "if it looked hotter."

Helmets for Hell Rides
2008-06-01 14:13:00
The traffic here in Vietnam continues to amaze. More than 3 million motorbikes in this city and no apparent rules. If you can manage to hold a six-foot ladder in one hand, clutch a cell phone to your ear and steer the motorbike with your other hand--all in the pounding rain during rush hour--go for it. The only thing the government has imposed since my trip here eight months ago is the helmet
Motorcycle Helmets - Why Are They Important?
2008-05-29 07:00:00
Are you protecting your head when you ride your motorcycle? Motorcycle helmets are one of the most important considerations of all safety concerns, especially when you consider the current statistics stating that brain injury is one of the most dominant causes of motorcycle fatalities. Realizing this importance can make wearing helmets easier to accept psychologically, ...

How Bicycle Helmets Are Made
2008-05-19 21:39:00
In a previous post, we looked at how bicycle helmets protect the head. Now lets look at how they're produced. Surely any helmet design will look good on paper but effectively manufacturing it under cost and time constraints is entirely another thing. But I must admit I have something against the way that shell and foam are attached, as in taped (watch the video)! Of course, there are other ways to piece them together. Bell uses what they term 'co-molding'. That drop test also seems insufficient, keeping in mind the many scenarios in which a cyclist can crash. Video courtesy of user RameshKumar123.Now one wonders how popular cycling helmets out there are so expensive. Does R&D and testing take up the costs or are there more factors involved? And what is so state-of-the-art about the latest research on bicycling helmets? Isn't the same knowledge used pretty much year after year or is it otherwise? Marketing trendiness of "pro-helmets" with a thousand vents must also be near th...
Michael Schumacher helps Schuberth Develop Motorcycle Helmets
2008-05-14 16:00:00
German motorcycle helmet manufacturer Schuberth recently announced they have struck a deal with seven-time Formula 1 World Champion Michael Schumacher to be a test developer of their latest helmet designs and have completed their first collaborative effort, dubbed the Schuberth Race. The new helmet features a variety of safety innovations that include a lightweight composite construction and a low-drag aerodynamic design.   Since retiring from F1 in 2006, Schumacher has found a new outlet for speed in amateur motorcycle racing and seems to be getting pretty good at it. In addition to winning his first European pro-am race in only his second try on the track, Schumi has tested with Ducati and other German IDM (German superbike) teams where he has posted competitive lap times.   Before his fledgling two-wheeled career, Schumacher was also a developer for Schuberth's automotive racing division during his F1 days. There was no word yet on when the Schuberth Race...

Stash Folding Helmets For Easy Storage
2008-04-21 21:53:00
Sometime back, UK based company Stashkit brought out a multi sports helmet that can be folded and inverted at the sides to about 60% claimed reduction and 330 grams of weight. Attractive organic styling is used for the injection-molded ABS (acrylonitrile?butadiene?styren-e copolymer) outer shells bonded to EPS (expanded polystyrene foam) liners. Stash uses quality ABS material from brand name Terluran® known for its high-quality surface finish and good gloss. It also has a high scratch and abrasion resistance and is unique in such an application.German company Edelrid Sports also came up with something similar in their Madillo but it is for rock climbing. The background idea though will tick with bicycle commuters, especially those with big heads that don't really know what to do with their 'pots' when off the bike.Click here to view a Stash helmet drop test for impact absorption, if you have not seen one before. Five Bike Helmets
2008-03-21 00:16:00
Unless you?re one of those obsessives who likes to get geared up in full racing attire for a few laps around town, you aren?t keen on wearing a helmet that looks like the nose of a fighter jet. Some city cyclists forego wearing helmets simply because they aren't well designed and look dorky. We?ve scoured the web and sourced a few that will save both your street cred and your noggin. To kick off our selections, we have to tip our hats to the purveyors of style over at Jorg & Olif, the Vancouver-based retailer known for their modish Dutch city bikes. They?re selling a sweet safety lid that?s purebred equestrian for $75 (above). via OzoLife. Specialized claims their $55 Skilled helmet (above left) is for the agro rider that wants a helmet to match their style. It looks to us more like a riff on the old school shorty helmet motorcyclists favor. Whoever it's for, it's a good look for city cruising. The Bell Citi helmet (above right) is the most resembling of a standard racing h...

Helmets do reduce chances of accidental death, confirms international revie
2008-01-23 09:44:00
An analysis of data from a variety of studies on the usefulness of helmets has confirmed that helmets significantly reduce the likelihood of accidental death as well as injury.   Helmet use reduces head injury risk by 69 per cent and death by 42 per cent, according to the analysis carried out by an international team of researchers.   “Motorcycle helmets protect motorcyclists who crash from sustaining head injury, and the results also suggest that motorcycle helmets protect motorcyclists who crash from death,” said lead author Dr. Betty Liu, epidemiologist at Oxford University in England.   “The findings are important to consider in those countries with without mandatory motorcycle helmet laws, as well as in jurisdictions with weak or partial helmet legislation,” added co-author Dr. Rebecca Ivers, head of the Injury Prevention Program at the George Institute for International Health in Sydney, Australia.   The review appearing in the cur...

2008 F1 Drivers Helmets
2008-01-22 07:02:00
The teams keep rolling out their new cars and the F1 drivers are coming up with their 2008 helmet design. Here they are: Alonso, Piquet, Glock Trulli, Heidfeld, Kubica Kovalainen Fernando Alonso seems to be getting away from McLaren days and returning to Renault even with his helmet design. Jarno Trulli reduced the shiny silver surface with more red colour over it. Nick Heidfeld and Robert Kubica keep the designs very close to their 2007 styles. Please check back for updates to this post with more on 2008 F1 driver helmets. It happened before that drivers used different design for the winter testing and came up with brand new one when the season started, so these may not yet be the definite 2008 helmets. Specialized 2D Helmets Recalled
2008-01-17 02:47:00
The news is a few weeks old, but news is never old especially if it concerns your helmet. Word was out from the U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission late last year that these stylish looking 200 dollar helmets failed the testing standards laid out by them. ( Hush hush : Its made in China...) No, but seriously, I'm curious to know how the product failed the tests. Specialized is recalling about 3000 units for complete money back or a better replacement. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported but it may be an accident waiting to happen.
Auto Darkening Welding Helmets Basic Terms and Definitions
2008-01-12 16:14:00
Auto Darkening Welding Helmets are the best welding helmets to protect a welder?s eye from flash damage in welding applications. Auto Darkening welding helmet filters offer the same level of protection as a standard welding helmet filter. Auto darkening filters detect the flash of the arc and darken so fast the eye cannot detect it. Remember welder?s flash is the cause of 6% of construction related injuries and purchasing a good auto darkening welding helmet will go a long way to prevent needless injuries. Remember an auto darkening filter still protects your eyes from UV and IR light even when it is not darkened. Here are some common terms and definitions to help you decide which features you want in an auto darkening welding helmet: Delay Adjustment: allows user to adjust the amount of time before the lens transitions back to light state Sensitivity Adjustment: allows user to fine tune unit depending on ambient light or arc intensity; allows low amp, DC TIG welding other units can...

Riddell starts shipping concussion-monitoring football helmets
2007-12-19 11:55:00
We've seen a couple helmet systems that monitor impacts -- including prototype football helmets -- but Riddell is bringing the tech to market with the Revolution IQ HITS (Head Impact Telemetry System) helmet, which contains a system of sensors that stores data about the last 100 impacts, which can later be wirelessly transmitted to a laptop for analysis. Up to six $999 helmets can be linked to each $299 HITS receiver, and players and trainers can access data via a web app for later evaluation. The helmet is shipping now, and apparently the University of Missouri and several other NCAA schools have already placed orders.[Via Technology Review]

Motorcycle Helmets
2007-11-14 02:32:00
I am writing this as follow up to an earlier posting on helmet options for my 2008 Harley-Davidson Sportster. There have been more than a few strong feelings expressed on the topic of helmets so I’m providing some feedback and a poll so others can weigh in.I’ve ridden the Sportster XL1200 Custom for about a thousand miles with a half helmet and no windscreen. Overall it has been a lot of fun and is a true immersion into the experience of riding. There is really nothing out there to separate rider from the full experience, sites, sounds, smells, temperature. That said, I’ve never really felt comfortable riding with my face fully exposed, probably a result of starting on sportbikes. A Harley windscreen was fitted to the Sportster in October and that has made long distance riding much more enjoyable. Behind the screen I feel I can ride all day, without the screen long rides became tiresome. With the windscreen I experienced some significant buffeting about the head, very noticeab...

Another look back to the history, helmets of race drivers in 2005. There are few drivers that only participated in 1 race - Wurz, de la Rosa (standing in for injured Montoya), Davidson (standing in for sick Sato), Zonta (standing in for crash shaken Ralf Schumacher). Davidson’s only race lasted all 2 laps (engine). Zonta’s was even better, he only managed the warm up lap before parking the car in the garage at the Indy farce GP… Here are the helmets. Renault (Alonso, Fisichella) McLaren (Raikkonen, Montoya, Wurz, de la Rosa) Ferrari (Michael Schumacher, Barrichello) BAR Honda (Button, Sato, Davidson) BMW Williams (Heidfeld, Webber, Pizzonia) Toyota (Trulli, Ralf Schumacher, Zonta) Red Bull (Coulthard, Klien, Liuzzi) Sauber (Massa, Villeneuve) Jordan (Monteiro, Karthikeyan) Minardi (Friesacher, Albers, Doornbos)

Football Helmets.
2007-09-19 22:25:00
Every time I watch football, I’m always amazed at how it is two massive men can clonk their heads together during a play and not get hurt. Ok, well, except in the case of the poor guy from Buffalo, Eric Everett, who broke his neck in a freak accident in their season opener. A New Football Helmet wouldn’t have helped Everett, as it was the vertebrae in his neck that broke, but there are some that can help to avoid serious head injuries. The Schutt ION 4D and the SkyDex 2 padding system can help to protect a player’s head better. I always cringe every time I see a bunch of players slam themselves together while going after the pigskin.  I do love watching the game and cheering for my Baltimore Ravens, but watching the guys try to kill each other sometimes makes me cringe! I think the hardest part is watching Kyle Boller get sacked.  OY.  My kingdom for a good quarterback!

Tanizawa helmets out of this world
2007-07-21 18:24:00
It would seem as though these helmets from Tanizawa of Japan are pre-cursors to those full-faced helmets worn by Clone Troopers before the Empire was formed. A couple of versions were paraded at the Japan Wireless Show, where 'A' came with a W-CDMA (FOMA) card, an integrated telephone, GPS navigation, a RFID chip, and a camera that displays real-time audio and video information. As for the 'B' mode, it boasts a vibrating system, an integrated walkie-talkie, solar panels, and simple visualization via a LED display. Sounds as though these would find a place on the battlefield. You know how hard it is communicating with someone else in the midst of battle - just take a look at how Captain Lennox fared in Transformers as he tried to call the Pentagon while battling Scorponok.(Via UberGizmo, the Gadgets News Blog.)
