Herbal Tea for Cough and Cold
2007-12-10 01:56:00
The cold and cough season has affected our house severely. Mostly on account of the cretins on my commute that use the subway as their own personal Petri dish. The cough has been especially rough on Scanlynn. I on the other hand have been bred on the fine air in Pune city with an S.P.M. count of over 150. As we entered the 4th day of our seasonal suffering, I remembered a concoction my ayurvedic doctor would prescribe. I would take most of what my vaidya prescribed with a pinch of salt. Not to mention the fact that some of his prescriptions actually required a pinch of salt. But I remembered that he had given me a recipe for a cough tea that could be taken if you were looking for a non-chemical alternative to calming the tickles in your throat. It was a good change from regular tea, and it did the job. And as a bonus it is herbal and all natural.Ingredients4 cups water3 tsp grated ginger1 stick cinnamon10 cloves of cardamom3 cloves1/2 tsp black peppercorns (crushed) 1/4 tsp nutmegH...

Homemade Herbal Teas
2007-09-16 09:53:00
I found a nice recipe for homemade fruit and herbal teas, that is, natural with no artificial flavourings but with the real taste and goodness of real herbs and fruits. I actually copied the recipe from a nice italian brand of organic teas in bottles called Achillea (see here). The secret is to mix nice herbs like Rosa Canina, it's the red fruit of the wild rose or hybiscus flowers, or any herb you like with other herbs like Raspberry flowers or other healing herbs, make an infusion and use concentrated apple juice as a sweetener. Raspberry leaves are very good for children, they are very rich in minerals and vitamins and also they help to reduce fever. Rosa Canina is a bomb of vitamin C. In Italy we have Erboristeria, which is a shop that sells loose herbs and a trained person that will tell you what herbs are best for you. That's where I go. Adding the apple juice is a good way to make it taste nice, because some teas are sometimes too herby! :)These teas are excellent co...
Herbal tea can lower the risk of developing breast cancer.
2007-09-05 05:14:00
Drinking herbal tea can lower the risk of developing breast cancer. Research based on 4,400 women who were monitored for more than six years shows that those who drank herbal tea more than halved the risk of developing the disease. The women were all cancer-free at the start of the study, but by the end nearly 100 breast cancers had been diagnosed. When their diets were analysed, it was found that those who had been drinking herbal teas, which are rich in antioxidants, had a 57 per cent lower risk than non-drinkers. 'The results suggest consumption of herbal tea may have a role in the prevention of breast cancer,' say the researchers for the French institute, Supplémentation en Vitamines et Minéraux Antioxydants. The study also showed that drinking ordinary tea, coffee, fruit juice or wine is not linked with risk for developing breast cancer. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in Britain— one in nine women will develop the disease at some point in their lives.LINK [...

Harney & Sons Peppermint Herbal Tea
2007-06-21 16:49:00
I was shopping at Barnes & Noble the other day, absent-mindedly waiting in line at the cafe for a fresh-brewed iced tea (yes, part of the ongoing QPIT - Quest for the Perfect Iced Tea). What I got was ok, a passion-fruit blend which was definitely refreshing, just a tad heavy on the fruit flavor. It was so overwhelmingly fruity, and the color such a deep red that you practically forgot you were drinking a tea at all. Still, on a hot day it scratched my itch and its something I'd order again if there were no better alternatives. (How's that for noncommittal?)Anyway, this review isn't about B&N's tea, but rather its about Harney & Sons's Peppermint Herbal tea - a tin which caught my eye whilst waiting on line at the B&N cafe. I'm a sucker for peppermint tea, and my stocks at home had long ago dwindled to nothing, so I picked it up for $7.95 (loose, 3 oz). Brought it home, opened the can and took the obligatory First Whiff - absolutely delightful. Quite possibly one of th...
