Herbie Hancock's River: The Joni Letters jumped from number 159 to number five this week on the album chart with an increase in sales of 967%. Sales of the album for the week totaled 54,000 copies, which equals the total sales for the disc between its release last September and Grammy night.It's also the highest that Hancock has charted on the pop albums chart in his forty year career. Hancock's first album, Blow-Up, peaked at number 192 in 1967. Since that time, he's had two top twenty albums, Head Hunters in 1974 (peaked at number 13) and Trust from later that same year (peaked at number 12).Hancock's album finally displaces the Eagles' Long Road Out of Eden which had been the highest charting album by a classic artist for the last fourteen weeks.Also getting a huge bump in sales is retro-soul queen Amy Winehouse, who received five wins on Grammy night. 2007-10-27 16:21:00 Herbie Hancock - Sextant (1973)Recorded with the sly, space-funky band that Herbie Hancock formed as Mwandishi (check out the two-CD Warner Bros. collection), Sextant is one of those cornerstone jazz CDs. It ranks with the best early, electric fusion for its fuzzing of textures, always used as bedrock for killer, roomy solos. A troika of horn greats can take much of the credit for the solos: trombonist Julian Priester, trumpeter Eddie Henderson, and saxist Bennie Maupin. Each generates great, dense ideas without betraying Hancock's eerie ambience and funky vibe. Yes, this is an aggregation of many 1970s-era ideas: renewed sense of Africanisms (at least in the band's naming), intensified percussive underpinnings, and a heap of rumbly rhythms that give props to everyone in neofunk jazz from Clyde Stubblefield to Funkadelic, albeit in a slowed, methodically rhythmic vein.
