Hanging out the Herbs
2009-09-23 10:00:00 Time to dry those herbs--it's been a good summer for growing and I've got pineapple mint (which really does smell like pineapple), tarragon (LOVE that stuff) and sage hanging here. One of the kids has a friend whose mother's name is Cinnamon. Isn't that lovely? I don't even know the woman but the name says it all. If I were going to name my kids after herbs and spices then Grace would be Anise, Spencer would be Coriander, David would be Turmeric and Lillian would be Nutmeg. Of course you could always go with plain old Rosemary and Ginger I suppose but who would want to be plain?I think I'd want to be Saffron. Yes, Saffron please, from now on.***And a few other things . . .First, Stephanie from Metropolitan Mama has written an ebook, Bloggertunity: A Mom's Guide to Blogging which gives you instructions on setting up your own blog. I've met Stephanie and she's a wonderful person who gives her best to blogging so it's worth a peek to see what she has to say.Second, Susan fro...

Herbal Abundance: What to do with a plethora of herbs?
2008-06-02 17:40:00 Summer is here and with it comes a fresh plethora of herbs! If you are like me, sometimes you get really excited about that and can’t help but scoop up big bunches of fresh herbs when you see them at the Farmers Markets or the grocery store. Then you end up throwing half of them away after they have sat rotting in your fridge for days on end…well that is just no good. Herbs are a wonderful way to get more greens into your diet and many of them also have other health properties - not to mention they improve the smell of ones breath! So what does one do with an over abundance of herbs? On a recent trip to the Farmers Market I procured rather large bunches of Arugala, Basil, Mint and Dill. I brought them home, filled up some vases with water, stuck the herbs in the vases and put them promptly into the fridge to use whenever the mood took me. Then, said herbs, sat all pretty in my fridge for about 2 weeks. I had barely touched them. They were still looking pretty good, but ...

Grilled Salmon with Herbs
2008-05-22 08:14:00 If you recall, I mentioned in my earlier post that my hubby wants fish for dinner. This is his latest favourite fish dish. However, accordingly to the seller for dill which is used in this dish, not many people like it as the smell is rather strong. It is rather strong but that's exactly why it's used. I don't eat cooked salmon (I only like it as sashimi) because of the smell when it's cooked but when it's cooked with dill, when I can smell is the aroma of dill. Yeah, I'm not so put off by cooked salmon now.Another plus point for this dish - very easy and fast to cook. Nice for those who are come back home late but still want some hot home cooked dinner. Just blanch or steam some veggies to go with this and dinner is done.I'm using oven to cook this but if you do not have one, you can try steaming it. However, do seal it with foil or cling wrap when you steam it. This is to avoid adding the water vapor from steaming to the fish.Ingredients:100g Salmon1 glove Garlic, chopped fi...

Can Herbs Really Heal?
2008-05-09 01:14:00 Through most of The Clan of the Cave Bear, that runawaybest seller about the lives and loves of the cave man, the heroine, Ayla, is groomed to take over from the tribe's medicine lady. Ayla is not only taught what plants to use for what problems, but also what part of the plants (the stem, root or leaves) to use and how to process them (hang them upside down to dry, grind them in a bowl, etc.).Over the course of nearly 500 pages, a lot of pains are easedand wounds mended through the herbal magic. And it's quite natural that in the thousands of years that the cave man and woman were on this earth they would have learned to use some of nature's offerings for medicinal purposes.Their method of testing a product was to go directly to clinicaltrials--that is, they used the trial-and-error method. No doubt a lot of people got sick--or sicker--in the process, just as today a lot of laboratory mice and rats are made ill by modern man's testing. But some of the cave dwellers had their pai...

Detoxifying Herbs for Acne
2008-05-04 13:16:00 Herbal remedies for acne are becoming popular these days but it is important to take note that this should just be used as an adjunct to the current treatment being used. These herbal remedies are not “quick cures” because it will just support the body’s capability to cure itself. Detoxifying herbs are usually used to cleanse the body; it will eliminate waste from the kidney, lungs, and colons. While this may not fit into the Western idea of acne cure, the internal condition of the body has been proven to have significant improvement of its outside appearance. The downside of detoxifying herbs is that it will not directly cure the acne because it will not be applied on the skin. Rather, its indirect way to acne cure is better for long term health and better physical appearance. In line with this, don’t be discouraged when results don’t happen overnight because it will first improve the general well-being of a person before its aesthetic benefits are rea...

The Magic Of Herbs
2008-04-29 20:22:00 I am a week away from finishing up my Herbal Pharmacology class?one of a number of classes I must take if I am to receive the certification in healing arts that I working towards. I knew little about herbs prior to taking this class. What I did know was in the form of negative biased opinion?the result of the various new age nut cases or old hippies I?ve known. They were, for the most part, so off the wall in their thinking and life-styles that I assumed, wrongly as it turns out, that what they had to say about herbs were just as off the wall. But no sooner had the class started did I begin to realized the genuine magic that is contained within many growing things that God designed and caused to grow across the face of the earth. And in retrospect that would only make sense. All naturally growing food from the ground is natural medicine. Freshly grown herbs, fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts and legumes provide us with all that we need to live and grow in natural health and well being...

Dangerous foods and herbs to avoid during pregnancy
2008-04-12 15:17:00 Ever since you spread the news of your pregnancy, you have probably been inundated with tons of well-meaning, but often unwanted pregnancy and parenting advice. While it may not all be bad, the only person's advice you should really heed is that of your doctor. One thing that he or she may have discussed with you at your first prenatal visit was the importance of eating a healthy diet, and the foods and herbs that are not safe for you to consume during your pregnancy. One thing that you should definitely cross of your list is anything that contains alcohol. It may be difficult for you to do, especially if you are someone who enjoys a drink on a regular basis, but you really have to do it for the health of your baby, if no other reason. There is no clear indication of how much alcohol that you can safely consume during your pregnancy, which is why you should avoid it altogether; the risks are just too great. Your baby could be born with a mental defect, which could impact him or he...
Great Italian Food Starts With Fresh Herbs
2008-04-10 23:45:00 Italians insist upon fresh ingredients in their food, and their herbs are no exception. There are a variety of fresh herbs common in Italian cooking. Most people are familiar with the little bottles of dried herbs from the grocery store, but if you haven't prepared food with fresh herbs, you really need to give it a try. What's the distinction between an herb and a spice?Spices are made from the seeds, root, fruit or barks of aromatic plants, while the herbs primarily consist of the leaves and stems. Herb plants contain oils which are very fragrant and add the distinctive aroma and flavor that Italian food is known for.A few of the most common herbs are basil, oregano, parsley, rosemary, sage and thyme. Basil is a member of the mint family, and like all mint herbs, it is extremely fragrant when picked fresh. Basil leaves blacken when exposed to metal, therefore it is common in Italy to tear the leaves by hand before throwing the basil into a sauce or onto a dish. Basil is the prima...
Cooking With Herbs Part I
2008-04-10 03:34:00 Herbal Vinegars and Oils Most people are familiar with some aspect of cooking with herbs. Everybody grew up adding Coriander to Pea Soup or Basil to Tomato Sauce or some other great herb to some family favorite. Mom's recipe books all the way back to Betty Crocker had pages of references to various herbs and spices and what they best accompanied. Everyone knows that the Italian herbs are Basil, Oregano, Garlic and Thyme. Most people also know that Indian spices include Curry, Coriander and Turmeric. And many more know to use "Taco Seasoning" with their Mexican dishes but not too many of us realize exactly what spices and herbs this entails. Still, most of us are more or less somewhat familiar of the art of using herbs and spices in our cooking. But there are also many Americans who prefer plain to spicy and just won't eat anything ethnic. This is like my father, who won't eat Chinese or Thai foods because he thinks they are too spicy or weird for his taste. He like...

2008-04-05 11:05:00 by Mary Hanna Health spa treatments can be costly. Have you ever considered creating your own home spa by using lavender and other herbs from your own herb garden? Grow your Own Herbs and Vegetables and Save Lots of Money!
2008-03-24 15:01:00 Today's hot deal has an environmental focus. Recently, I wanted to do more in my household and also help heal this planet. I wanted to reduce household waste and also reduce my Greenhouse gas emissions. I tried different things in my house and discovered the fun of growing some of my own vegetables and herbs. I realized that if I could grow even a small fraction of the vegetables and herbs that I eat, I could save a lot of money on my grocery bills.I started small. I found that some of the vegetables that I buy at the supermarket still contain roots that can be replanted. For example, when you buy green onions, spinach, leeks, butter lettuce, alfalfa sprouts, radishes, parsley, or cilantro at the grocery store, you'll find that they will still have roots attached to them. These vegetables are still living plants. So you can simply cut off the root part of these plants and replant them in a pot filled with potting soil. By replanting the roots of vegetables that I bought from the ... |
