Day 1: Unshakable Faith
2008-05-03 03:15:00 It is day one of the Unshakable Faith Conference put on at Landmark Cincinnati. The pastors hope that this will become an annual event, but they don’t think that they can top this first year. I’m inclined to agree. First on the menu this evening was Dr. Norman Geisler presenting a talk that the program title ...

Short Takes — More Opra-heresy, An Excellent April Fool’s Post, Biblica
2008-04-06 20:32:00 Oprah Winfrey and her good friend Eckhart Tolle continue to lead more than two million down the wide open road to destruction while unashamedly twisting Scripture along the way. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-9sEN-QejlO8 I’m calling this phenomenon Opra-heresy from here on. On a related note, there’s a new book out called Don’t Drink The Kool-Aid that exposes the spiritual deception extolled by Oprah Winfrey, Marianne Williamson (A Course in Miracles) and Eckhart Tolle. The book is available in paperback and for immediate download as an e-book. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zf3Gh8dVoBo I haven’t perused much of the book myself though since there’s not much available at the web site in the form of excerpts. Pity, that. Happy Atheists’ Day (April 1) The post isn’t an April Fool’s Day joke, but The Pilgrim over at Reformation Nation had a great post on April Fool’s Day pointing out the foolishness of many who can without a doub...

Is It the Wright Stuff or Heresy?
2008-03-25 03:40:00 IGNORING THE THEOLOGICAL PROBLEMSMichael Goodwin has a Daily News column: “…As well they should. You can't be a President if you won't stand up to an anti-American bigot. More to the point, you can't become President by running against the country or having people around you who hate it….If there is such a thing as a "typical white person," is there also a "typical black person"? And is Jeremiah Wright typical? What would grandma say to that? As for McCain, he was off in Europe and the Mideast, meeting heads of state and dealing with global issues. As contrasts ...

Web 2.0 heresy - why are we seeing a public virtual stoning?
2008-03-09 02:28:00 Good heavens - a journo from Newsweek gets up and says that a lot of the new web is full of cr*p, and that actually some people are rather more keen on services that sort the wheat from the chaff than a while ago....and for this he is publically virtually stoned - the vituperation in some of the articles is quite severe (just read some of the posts from Techmeme earlier today). For the record - I am no great fan of Andrew Keen's work, have no dealings with Newsweek (never buy it even) and I'm no

Quest for the Historical Jesus
2008-03-05 19:02:00 Liberal scholarship has agreed on one point and one point alone: the Jesus of history is not the Jesus presented in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Fantasy Heresy: Draft Pitchers Early
2008-03-05 12:44:00 Amongst the various Gospels of Fantasy Baseball is the one that says fantasy players should not draft pitching at the values every rankings system assigns it. I admit to being one of the faithful, but, recently, I have begun to rethink this. Not in the first round, though. The top position players are still much better relative to their peers than the top pitchers are, but, after the first round and a half or so, I am not so sure. Should I take Carlos Lee or Grady Sizemore over Jake Peavy in the second round when I can get Torri Hunter or Brad Hawpe four or five rounds later? Should I take Russ Martin in the third round over Erik Bedard or Brandon Webb when I can get Jorge Posada in the 8th round? How about Bobby Abreu over Josh Beckett when a whole slew of potential 15 HR/15 SB outfielders who will play every day, like Lastings Milledge, Justin Upton and Adam Jones, are available 100s of picks later? To me the answer is obvious. You don't.  ...

On Doctrine
2008-03-04 04:13:00 My good friend Caleb posted an interesting but profoundly misguided entry on his MySpace Blog. People who adhere to extremist views of sola scriptura run the danger of sinking into heresy without realizing ...
The Latest Heresy Involving ?St. McCain?
2008-03-03 22:32:00 This probably amounts to nothing more than an ?echo chamber? post, but I don?t care.It would be nothing more than merely good sport to see John McCain?s candidacy for president imploding all over the place* despite the corporate media narrative that he somehow has been vindicated on Iraq if it weren?t for the presence of John Hagee.(* - wish fulfillment on my part...ed.)Of all the posts I?ve seen so far on this human nematode, I think this from MyDD captures Hagee in all of his ignominy better than anything else I?ve seen.See, it?s not enough that Hagee has referred to the Catholic Church as ?The Great Whore? (which is offensive enough to yours truly; despite some of my admittedly liberal adherence to church doctrine for which I make no apology, I still defend the faith), but he has also offered the following observations?Hagee on Hurricane Katrina"All hurricanes are acts of God because God controls the heavens. I believe that New Orleans had a level of sin that was offensive to God...

2008-02-27 11:27:00 A dog barks when his master is attacked. I would be a coward if I saw that God's truth is attacked and yet would remain silent.... John Calvin (1509-1564)No man is to lower himself by showing tolerance towards any sort of heretic, least of all a Calvinist. Cardinal Caraffa 1542The early Church was ascetic, but she proved that she was not pessimistic, simply by condemning the pessimists. The creed declared that man was sinful, but it did not declare that life was evil . . . The condemnation of the early heretics is itself condemned as something crabbed and narrow; but it was in truth the very proof that the Church meant to be brotherly and broad. It proved that the primitive Catholics were specially eager to explain that they did not think man utterly vile; that they did not think life incurably miserable; that they did not think marriage a sin or procreation a tragedy.G K Chesterton {The Everlasting Man, Garden City, NY: Doubleday Image, 1925, p. 223}By entertaining of strange pers...

Root Beer, the Muppets and Some Religious Heresy
2008-01-18 16:00:00 I do have some legitimate posts coming up--really I do! I've been writing posts left and right but I also have a few things that need to be mentioned . . . you know, clean off my desk and all that . . .1. PBS is running a Jane Austen movie extravaganza on Sunday nights to showcase new movies of all six of Ms. Austen's novels done by Masterpiece Theater. I believe Persuasion (my personal favorite) started off the line-up last Sunday. Indeed! Get on the literary bandwagon and Tivo it pronto!2. In unrelated events--I make my own homemade syrup on mornings when I'm productive enough to create pancakes for breakfast. A week ago the kids started mentioning that the syrup tasted--funny. I ignored them because since when do I ever listen to my children's food preferences? Until I reached for my maple flavoring to make up a new batch and realized I'd been using root beer extract in place of maple. Root beer syrup on pancakes. How gross is that? Hmmm . . . but Andrew says that h...

Modernism : The Lure of Heresy
2007-12-31 12:15:00 Happy New Year to all international escorts, high class courtesans and voluptuaries!Thomas Mann was an archmodernist, and this was his favorite story: One day, Gustave Flaubert was out walking with his sister. Ferociously antibourgeois, Flaubert lived alone, unconsoled and unencumbered by marriage or family. His novels mocked and maligned the French middle class, ironizing it into oblivion. He was a great frequenter of brothels and had fornicated his way through Paris and Cairo. And yet here he was out for a stroll, suddenly stopping in his tracks before a small house surrounded by a white picket fence. In the yard, a solid middle-class father played with his typical middle-class children while wife and mother looked lovingly on. The enemy! Yet instead of holding his nose, Flaubert gestured toward the house and exclaimed, without irony: “Ils sont dans le vrai!” (“They are in the truth!”) For Mann, the delightful incident illustrated the tension between the outrage at convent...
For the Bible Tells Me So Heresy
2007-11-28 17:07:00 Again it appears we have the heresy of persons trying to use Scripture to promote as acceptable, that which is clearly stated in Scripture as an unnatural, unseemly, reprobate sin in the sight of the Almighty Lord God of Heaven and Earth.Interestingly the film title of For the Bible Tells Me So has little to do with honesty on the part of the writers and promoters, for the Bible clearly teaches that homosexuality is a sin. There is no doubt concerning this matter, for even Atheists (which deny there is a God or that Scripture should be used today) freely admit that the Scriptures and God are against homosexuality. To deny the teaching of Scripture against homosexuality is completely dishonest from anyone who would claim such. The questions presented by the film are thus:?Can the love between two people ever be an abomination? Is the chasm separating gays and lesbians and Christianity too wide to cross? Is the Bible an excuse to hate??The film?s proclaim is as follows:?Winner of the A...
Irenaeus on the Valentinian Heresy Regarding Mary
2007-10-29 13:52:00 From Pelikan's book - Mary Through the Centuries -Irenaeus, to whom we owe the first large-scale exposition of the parallel between Eve and Mary, is likewise one of the sources from whom we learn that such a hesitancy among the followers of the Gnostic teacher Valentinus had led them to assert that Jesus had not been "born" of the Virgin Mary in the usual sense at all, but had "passed through Mary as water runs through a tube," not only without birth pangs but without the involvement of the mother except in a purely passive sense. His source is Irenaeus Against Heresies 1.7.2:There are also some who maintain that he also produced Christ as his own proper son, but of an animal nature, and that mention was made of him by the prophets. This Christ passed through Mary just as water flows through a tube; and there descended upon him in the form of a dove at the time of his baptism, that Saviour who belonged to the Pleroma, and was formed by the combined efforts of all its inhabitants. It ...

Maritime: Heresy and the Hotel Choir
2007-10-16 01:04:00 Maritime: Heresy and the Hotel ChoirHeresey and the Hotel Choir is the third full length album for Maritime. Maritime is comprised of ex-members of the Promise Ring and the Dismemberment Plan, both big names in their own right. The funny thing about Maritime is they are nothing like Promise Ring or the Dismemberment Plan. The only thing that really remains from those two bands is Davey von Bohlen's (former singer for the Promise Ring) vocals. His vocals have always seemed a little timid. With Promise Ring it was no problem because he was singing relatively timid songs, Maritime is a different beast.Maritime is a perfect indie pop band. The songs are light and fluffy. They try to stay away from cliched love songs. The album opens with "Guns of Navarone". Not a Skatalites cover, but it's jangly chorus has a ska element to it. Like all of Von Bohlen's song writing it's melodic and hook laden."Hand Over Hannover" is maybe the heaviest song by Maritime yet. With it up tempo dr...

Piracy v. Heresy: They Burn Heretics Don't They?
2007-10-10 13:29:00 People love pirates. Johnny Depp embodying the archetype doesn't hurt. Why pirates? Well, there's a hierarchy, so you can still "get to the top," unlike mere brigands, or anarchists. There's the freedom/danger of the sea. There's the chance for riches. Not just money, but wealth. Treasure. The very word is seductive. There's a Robin Hood element too. Pirates, as portrayed in modernity, tend to go after the big government treasury (Treasure/Treasury... get it?), as opposed to mere robbery. Stealing from the Man isn't stealing at all, right? I mean, he stole it from us. This romanticizes the act, making thievery a Statement. As Bob Dylan said, "Steal a little and they throw you in jail. Steal a lot and they make you king." -Sweetheart Like You Even today, one opens a whole can of trouble, when finding treasure. Mel Fisher, the undersea treasure hunter can tell you all about that. Society allows you to finds some treasure, not a lot, though. Mel found more than a lot, he ...

Heresy
2007-09-22 18:16:00 Many Christians claim the Bible contains "all the answers" necessary for True spiritual growth and communion with God, but I sometimes doubt this is an actual belief.Biblical inferences that preserve the status quo are called theology, while contrasting Biblical conclusions are known as heresy. Although both theology and heresy may be derived from equally consistent patterns of reasoning within the religious framework, only one of these is considered valid in Christian circles.Often times, heresy is no more than inconvenient theology.
Blistering Interview With Divine Heresy's Tim Yeung
2007-09-15 06:52:00 Blistering: Can you give us an idea of how Divine Heresy came together? Tim Yeung: The band basically came together when me and Dino started jamming in 2005 around June or July. We had written some material. Just me and Dino were working on it. He had some stuff before hand, before I came into the picture, a couple of riffs and some material. Then we got together and worked on some more songs. We?d found our singer, Tommy Vext, through a couple of reputable people in the music industry, he was recommended to us quite a few times. Tommy came in February 2006 and we?ve just been writing pretty much since he came in. We?ve just been working on it and working on it. Blistering: So was it Dino?s project to begin with then? Definitely there was a lot of creative input from both me and Tommy. Dino started before us, ...

Planet Loud interviews Divine Heresy's Dino Cazares
2007-08-28 21:52:00 Planet Loud - Hey Dino, first off let?s talk about guitars, you?re hailed as a guitar God by many people, so how did it come about that you play an 8 string Ibanez Custom made, it must have been difficult.Divine Heresy - (laughs) Well I've never really looked at myself in that way. It started back in 1995 when I switched over to the 7 string. when I was laying 6 string guitars I was tuning them down to B and A and when you start tuning strings down that low they tend to go really floppy, so in '95 when Ibanez approached me about playing the 7 string, you know it was only natural progression because the string tension was a lot better, it could handle to low tuning, but then again when I started playing the 7 string, I started tuning that low, you know it couldn?t handle a lot of the tuning, we had to use some pretty big thick gauge strings, it was only a natural progression to go up to the 8 string.Planet Loud - Did they approach you, or did you say to them 'look I need an 8 stri...

Divine Heresy & The Agonist
2007-08-28 05:02:00 Just fell on this band, Divine Heresy, while looking for music news. The least I can say is that they have interesting artwork, I like it a lot. They also happen to have a song on their myspace called Failed Creation, not bad. Their album, Bleed The Fifth, is out tomorrow, I might have a look at this! Read this news report, also contains their video Failed Creation.Oh... it's metal, not for the faint of heart.Though the image up there kinda blew that away a little. Can't say I didn't warn you!edit: Now it just wouldn't be fair I talked about Divine Heresy, but not about The Agonist, pictured right, which I discovered about 10 minutes after writing this post. The Agonist is yet another metal band, (i'm getting more metal as time goes by, go figure) they're from Montreal and the 2 songs on their myspace are kicking some major asses. Actually, it's way better than Divine Heresy, there's definately more talent in The Agonist, it's just blatantly obvious. Another interesting fact...
