Hidden Treasures: Islamabad
2008-05-04 21:00:00 Asma Mirza Flickring through Islamabad MB group on Flickr, I ended up looking at the serene beauty of Golra's century old Banyans (aka bargad ~ century old is purely my own assumption). Have you been to Golra Railway Station ever? If no ~ wake up, pack up and get going. Its a MUST visit. The picture above seems familiar? If you closely watched vital Signs singing their tunes in early 90's ... you can recognize it :) Remember Islamabad's 5th gift to world? The News published a fine article almost an year back on Golra Railways station and it's heritage museum ... citing: ... All said and done, it is a gem of a museum and well worth a visit, especially if you remember the good old days when traveling by train was an exciting prospect -- something to look forward to as you packed your bags; a hamper with food and books and magazines to read when it became too dark to look outside. A paratha and an omelet never tasted as good as when you had them cold with a nice hot cup of tea ...

--=[ The Heritage Orchestra ]=--
2008-05-04 03:36:00 The Heritage Orchestra - The Heritage Orchestra (2006)Link 2First, one must understand that The Heritage Orchestra is truly an orchestra, 45 strong with a deep string section and powerful brass. Mingled inside the orchestral set up lies a jazz rhythm section, with guitar, bass, drums, vibes, keyboards, and other various instruments. Unlike an unbalanced mesh of two completely different styles (e.g. Trans-Siberian Orchestra), this group manages to mix jazz and classical music perfectly, where the modern rhythm section does not dominate the strings or vice versa. They truly play like one group, a remarkable achievement for the wide variety of instruments played at the same time. Personal favorite is "Sky Breaks," a 10-minute whirlwind of classical jazz synergy that would soothe the savage beast. This here is HEAT people...don't sleep! All track info is in the comment section...

Magic moments in Khmer heritage
2008-04-17 17:35:00 Date 2 Apr 2008 - 4 Apr 2008 Place Prasat Phanom Rung, Burirum ProvinceA splash of sunlight penetrating an ancient temple cloister signals a distinctive celebration at Prasat Phanom Rung. Knowing the exact moment to witness a spectacular sunrise through the doorway of an ancient Hindu temple requires a detailed calculation. The most auspicious day is 3 April; the time, 0602.32 at sunrise, as the amber sun is perfectly aligned in the centre of the main doorway to a temple standing on a former volcanic mountain in northeast Thailand. Actually, the sun rays pass straight through 15 perfectly aligned doorways of Prasat Phanom Rung, a revered and ancient Hindu monastery, just four times a year -– two sets of sunrises, in April and September, and two sets of sunsets, in March and October. These spectacular solar-related events, that also bear religious significance in the Hindu faithful, span just three days –- 2, 3 and 4 April. ...

Singapore Heritage centre seeks full govt funding to stay afloat
2008-04-12 05:47:00 Singapore Heritage centre seeks full govt funding to stay afloat Malay Heritage Centre struggling 2 years after striking out on its own By Arlina Arshad  TWO years after the Malay Heritage Centre took a step towards becoming financially self-sustaining, it has made an appeal for long-term government funding to stay afloat. It had at first thought it could make it on the formula of ‘one-third government funding, one-third revenue from programmes and one-third income from fund-raising activities’, Malay Heritage Foundation chairman Zainul Abidin Rasheed told The Straits Times on Wednesday. But it did not work. The Malay Heritage Centre, located in Sultan Gate in Kampong Glam, needs $1.5 million annually for operating expenses and to run programmes promoting Malay heritage, culture and history. Its revenues now meet only half that. The centre’s finances were in the red in 2006. It did better last year - with 1,835 heritage and cultural events taking place then. ...

Canadian Heritage Minister hates censorship bill C-10, says Senator
2008-04-11 21:52:00 Heritage Minister Josée Verner hates bill C-10, according to a comment made by Conservative Senator David Angus. A member of the Senate committee on banking, trade and commerce, Angus was listening to arguments against the proposed film censorship law from Canadian film producers when he committed a classic political faux pas?he said something incriminating while his microphone was still on. "The minister agrees. She told me she hates the law," said Angus to a colleague, as his voice was still being streamed live on the internet. "What we want is a sort of moratorium?" As an experienced politician, Angus took the high road when asked about his comments. Standing strong in the face of incriminating evidence, he denied everything. "I did not quote the minister because I did not even talk to the minister," he told CBC News. "I haven't heard myself say [the comment] and I'm certainly not acknowledging that I said it." What was he thinking? That as an unelected Senator appointed fo...

Luang Prabang--a World Heritage Site Worth Your Time
2008-04-08 16:44:00 I had the incredible delight of spending 2 days and 2 nights in Luang Prabang (Lao.co.uk, Lao Embassy, UNESCO World Heritage, Luang Prabang 2 Day, Luang Prabang Travel, Wikipedia, Wikitravel, The New York Times, Travelfish.org). Luang Prabang is a flourishing and small town that is beautifully situated on the banks of the Mekong and Nam Khan Rivers (they converge in Luang Prabang). Unfortunately, I left not getting to see and do everything that I wanted to. Oh well, this just gives me a reason to came back to Laos (a country I am falling in love with!) in the near future. The first night we arrived in Luang Prabang was pretty casual. Kim, Tyler, Sonja, and I decided to find a place to watch the sunset. We didn't have to look far--we walked to Phou Si (Lao translation: Holy Mountin), which is a large hill that rises from the center of the city. Phou Si has temples scattered on all sides, and we made our way up a number of steps to Wat Phra Bat Nua. A handful of younger monks were jok...
Romblon, Romblon is a heritage town
2008-04-07 18:28:00 All I knew about Romblon was that it was literally sitting on marble and that its cathedral is a National Cultural Treasure. But little did I know that the town's historical fabric was very much intact and if you compared the center of town to postcards from the prewar years, nothing much has changed. Walking around the streets of Romblon, Romblon was indeed a blast from the past! You could already see Fort San Andres as you enter Romblon Port. From the port, I walked towards the Romblon Shopping Center in from of Freedom Park where all the marble souvenir stores are clustered. There are a lot of really nice souvenirs but they should improve the ones with engravings which usually say "ROMBLON SOUVENIR." The way they engrave and paint the words in most of the souvenirs, in my opinion, cheapens the marble. Anyway, I decided to purchase souvenirs after I dropped off my stuff at the hotel.I was looking forward to seeing the Romblon Cathedral which is a National Cultural Treasure. But I ...

Celebrate Holland's heritage
2008-03-25 19:30:00 Every year the citizens of Holland celebrate two of their most recognisable symbols - the windmill and the bicycle. The second Saturday of May each year marks both National Windmill and Pumping Station Day as well as National Cycling Day, when 600 of the country's 1000 windmills welcome visitors for free, while hundreds of thousands of cyclists take to Holland's famously flat streets. Those on two wheels may want to take the opportunity to explore one of the hundreds of windmills, which indicate they are taking part in the free-entry scheme by flying a blue pennant. In the few remaining working mills in the country dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries, millers give demonstrations of what their working day is like.On the day, 360 cycle routes are specially set up for those on two wheels.Throughout the Netherlands, cycling is an extremely popular method of transportation all year round, with many cycle paths and facilities for cyclists, stretching from city to city and cross-bord...
